Seven Rooms, All Birds

Bea Nudd fed fourteen people on a Sunday night without appearing to cook anything, which is a trick I have seen precisely one other person manage and he had a brigade of six.

We ate in the back room of the Herring House at a table made of two tables, with the Ordnance Survey sheet for the whole parish held down at the corners by a salt cellar, a pepper mill, a tide table and somebody’s phone. The rest of the guests were coming later in the week. There was a bag of two hundred hand-tied lavender favours in the middle that Cleo kept picking up and putting down.

“The thing about a wedding,” said Dev, “is that it’s a phase change.”

“Here we go,” said Cleo.

“No, it’s useful. Everybody thinks the hard bit is the energy you put in. It isn’t. The hard bit is that you put energy in for months and nothing appears to happen, and then on one afternoon the whole thing changes state all at once and you can’t run it backwards.” He ate a chip. “That’s also why you can’t have the band and the speeches at the same time.”

“That is not why.”

“It’s adjacent to why.”

Dev Sundaram teaches physics to fourteen-year-olds in Norwich and has the unhurried, pleasant, faintly amused manner of a man who has been shouted at professionally for twelve years and stopped minding. He had already, before pudding, taught me a card trick, done it badly on purpose, then done it properly, then refused to explain it. I liked him so much it was actually inconvenient. It is easier to be complicated about a wedding when you can find something wrong with the groom.

“Right,” Cleo said, and turned the map round. “Talk me through Saturday like I’m thick.”

“Cars in Bea’s field from half twelve,” said Elias. He had a pencil. He did not have a pencil the way I have a pencil — mine lives behind my ear and comes out looking chewed — he had it flat on the map under one finger, like a man holding something still. “Marsh track’s out from about eleven till quarter past two, so if anybody comes early they park at the top and walk down Staithe Lane. Quay’ll be under water round about one.”

“Under water how much?”

“Ankle. Knee at the slipway.”

“Elias.”

“It goes under every spring tide, Cleo. It’s been going under since 1843. It’ll be off by two, we’ll squeegee it, nobody will die.” He moved the pencil two inches. “Ceremony’s here at three. Chapel Rise.”

“Under the tree,” said Cleo.

“Under the tree,” said Elias, and did not look at me.

“And the granary from four,” Cleo went on, “and Jean Pettifer has a list of things we’re not allowed to do in the granary which includes, and I’m quoting, dancing near the north wall, and I said, Jean, they’re going to dance wherever the bar isn’t, and she said—“

“—that she would be present,” said Bea Nudd from the doorway, putting down a jug. “She will and all.”

I had my hands round a mug of tea and I was doing the thing I do, which is to listen to a plan and wait for the two questions nobody has asked. In my job you learn that people are almost never wrong about the thing they are worried about. They are wrong about the thing they have not thought about at all.

“Two things,” I said.

Cleo put her chin in her hand. “I love this bit. She does this at work. Go on.”

“One. Who signs the tree off?”

“You do.”

“No, I mean who owns the risk. If I write a report on Wednesday that says that tree is fine and on Saturday the wind’s a six and a limb the size of a car comes down on eighty-four people, whose name is on it? Because it’s mine. And I need Jean and the Trust to know that before I write a single word, not after.”

“Oh,” said Cleo. “That’s less fun than I thought it would be.”

“Two.” I tipped my chin at the map. “Your ceremony’s at three. Guests are walking up from the quay, which is what, a hundred and forty metres and a slope. Some of them are eighty. If the water’s only off the quay at two, and the granary’s at the bottom and the tree’s at the top, everybody does that hill twice inside two hours in September on wet flint.”

There was a small silence, into which Dev said, “She’s right, you know,” with real pleasure, the way you’d greet a good result.

“Three would be better at half three,” Elias said. “There’s an hour in it either way. Depends what you want the light doing.”

“I want the light doing what it did in the photo,” said Cleo.

“Then half three.”

“Then half three,” said Cleo, and wrote it on her wrist, because she is thirty-three years old and a community midwife with a caseload of ninety women and she writes things on her wrist.

“And Dad comes Thursday,” Cleo said, to the map rather than to her brother. “Teatime. Marram’s sending Priti with him and she’s on till Sunday, she’s been brilliant. He’s got the Curlew room because it’s got the view of the water and the bathroom’s on the flat.”

“Thursday’s fine,” said Elias.

“Is it, though.” Cleo said it lightly. “Because if it’s going to be one of the weeks where it isn’t fine, I’d rather know now than at half two on Saturday.”

“It’s fine, Cleo.”

“Right.” She wrote something on her wrist. “Good.”

I watched her write it and I watched him watch her write it, and I thought: that is an exchange those two have had before. More than once. It had the worn quality of a thing that goes round.

It went on like that for an hour and it was, God help me, lovely. Arun Sundaram argued for a gazebo and was outvoted eight to one. Bea said Wilf Chalmers would lend us a hundred feet of bunting if somebody went and asked him properly, and everyone agreed that somebody would, and nobody wrote it down. Bea brought out a crumble. Somebody’s phone played four bars of the wrong song. Cleo told the story about the pigeon in the labour ward, which I have heard nine times and which is better every time, and at the end of it she laughed until she had to put her head on Dev’s shoulder, and he put his hand flat on her back without looking away from the map, which is the sort of thing I notice now and did not notice at twenty-five.

And at some point in all of that I finished talking, and set my mug down beside the tide table with about an inch of tea left in the bottom, because I never finish one. I don’t know why. I have never finished a hot drink in my life. My father was the same and my mother finds it a personal affront.

Elias reached over without looking and picked it up and drank it.

He got it halfway to his mouth. That’s the part. He got it halfway there — the whole motion so ordinary, so entirely unconsidered, the exact geometry of a thousand kitchen tables and car bonnets and the tailgate of a pickup at Deepdale in the rain — and then somewhere in the last four inches his hand understood what the rest of him hadn’t, and stopped.

He looked at the mug. Then he put it down on the map, very carefully, half an inch from where he had picked it up, and squared it, and took his hand away.

Nobody saw. Nobody at that table saw anything at all, except Cleo, who was mid-sentence about a pigeon, and whose eyes went to the mug and then to the ceiling and then back to Dev without any interruption to the sentence whatsoever.

I sat there with my hands in my lap.

Five years I had spent making him into a man who withheld things. A locked door on a gravel path. I had got quite good at it; it is a very restful way to think about somebody. And then he picked up my tea like it was 2020 and put it down like it was a thing he had stolen, and I discovered that what I could not survive was not being wanted by him.

It was watching him decide he’d lost the right to something that small.

“I’m going to bed,” I said, about forty minutes later, when it was a normal thing to say.

Cleo walked me to the foot of the stairs with her arm through mine and her chin on my shoulder, which she has done since we were eighteen and which makes walking almost impossible.

“Thank you for coming early,” she said.

“I’d have come a week early.”

“I know.” She squeezed my arm. “You’re all right, aren’t you? With the—“ a small movement of her head, back towards the room, which could have meant Elias or the map or the tree or the whole of it. “With the job.”

Here is a thing I have thought about a lot since. She gave me the door. She stood there in a corridor that smelled of woodsmoke and old carpet, on the night before the busiest week of her life, and held a door open for me, and all I had to do was walk through it and say: Cleo, about your brother.

“It’s a nice tree,” I said. “I like a job.”

“Course you do.” She kissed my cheek. “Night, Maddox.”

Bea gave me a key with a brass fob on it, worn smooth, with a bird stamped into the metal and AVOCET underneath in letters somebody had filled with black paint about forty years ago. Seven rooms in the Herring House and every one of them a bird; there is a Curlew and a Brent and a Turnstone and I have since been in four of them.

I went up. Second floor, right at the end, where the corridor takes a step down because the building has been three buildings and can’t agree.

There was a pair of boots outside the door before mine.

Not in the doorway. Set neatly against the skirting, toes to the wall, the way you do when you’ve been told once, in about 1998, not to bring the marsh into the house. Steel toes, salt-bloomed, the laces done up and tucked in. Above them, on the door, a brass fob exactly like mine, with a bird on it.

REDSHANK.

I stood in that corridor for longer than I would like to put in writing.

There was nothing wrong with it, and that is exactly the point. Bea Nudd has seven rooms and nineteen guests coming and she had put a woman on her own in Avocet and a man on his own in Redshank, and the alternative arrangements were worse, and nobody in that building had a thought in their head beyond linen. It was fine. It was completely fine.

It was fine, and I could hear the wind in the hedge, and I stood outside my own door with the key in my hand and knew — with the flat, unarguable certainty I usually reserve for load and decay and the tensile strength of green wood — that I was going to lie awake listening for the sound of a man taking his boots in off the landing.

I did.

He came up at twenty past eleven. He stopped. There was the small scrape of leather on board.

And then, very quietly, a second scrape: a man putting his boots back down again a little further along, further from my door, where I wouldn’t have to walk round them in the morning.
