The Warden's Letter

Warden Colm Ferris knocked twice on the frame of the open door and came in without waiting to be asked, which told Hesper everything she needed to know about her afternoon before he had said a single word.

“You’ll want to sit down for this one,” he said.

“I am sifting thirty pounds of Tuesday blend by hand because Tamsin has a cold and I have four standing orders due in the morning. Sitting down is not on the schedule.” She kept her hands in the sack, because they wanted the work more than her attention did, and because Colm had the look of a man who had rehearsed his opening line on the walk over and deserved to be let through it. “Say it standing up. I promise not to fall over from a piece of news.”

“Caldemoor’s sending someone to settle here. Under Article Nine.” He held out a folded paper as though it might take a finger off. “Came in on the morning post.”

“We take three or four families a year off that river. That isn’t news, that’s Tuesday.” She took the paper anyway, because refusing it would not change the words on it, and opened it out flat on the counter, where a sheet of paper stays where it is put.

She read the name once and told herself she had misread it. She read it again, slowly, the way she used to make apprentices read back a working they had got wrong, and the name held.

General Aurel Donnacha, formerly of the Caldemoor southern command, remanded to civilian resettlement under Article Nine, effective the fourteenth, village of Hollow Ash to serve as receiving township.

“The fourteenth,” she said.

“That’s today.”

“Nineteen villages sit on this border, Colm.” She was almost proud of how level it came out. “Nineteen. And somebody in a records office three hundred miles from here has decided that the man I fought a war to stop belongs in mine.”

“It isn’t a records clerk and you know it.” He had the grace to look uncomfortable, which was the only reason she did not say the next several things that had lined themselves up behind her teeth. “Resettlement goes where there’s capacity and no standing objection from the receiving warden. I didn’t file one.”

“You didn’t ask me.”

“No.”

“Thirty days isn’t up. You could still file.”

“I could.” Colm turned his hat over once in his hands. He had done that since he was twelve and the miller’s youngest, following her up and down this street asking about workings he was nowhere near old enough to be taught. “I’m not going to.”

“Then this is a courtesy call.”

“It’s two hours’ warning, and you’d have had three if the post hadn’t been late.” He looked at her steadily, which he had learned somewhere in the twenty-two years since the hat-turning started. “I’d rather you heard it from me across your own counter than found out when he walked in here wanting a pot of something hot. Which, knowing this village, is what’s going to happen inside the week.”

Hesper wiped her hands on her apron, one and then the other, and put them out of sight below the counter.

“You’ll want to tell me why,” she said. “Go on. I’d rather have it now than in a month, in pieces, from Prue.”

“Because you spent two years arguing that this border only holds if the treaty means the same thing on both sides of it. I sat in the mill hall and listened to you say it to men who wanted to hear the opposite.” He set the hat down on the counter, thought better of it, and picked it up again. “If I carve out an exception the first time the thing costs you something, then every man on the Caldemoor side who said our peace wouldn’t survive contact with an actual grievance was right, and I handed him the proof.”

“That is a very tidy argument.”

“It’s your argument. I’ve only been keeping it.” Something in his face went careful. “And you’d thank me today and hate me by midsummer, once you’d had time to be ashamed of wanting it. I’ve known you since I was twelve. I’m allowed one or two unkind truths a decade.”

“You are allowed none at all, and you’ll have tea before you go, because you’ve walked down from the mill and you have the look of a man who’s had nothing since breakfast.” She was already reaching for the kettle. Giving instructions was what her mouth did while the rest of her caught up; she had known that about herself for years and had never once found a reason to stop. “Sit. Eat the end of that loaf. Don’t argue with me about a loaf, Colm, I’ve had a morning.”

He ate the loaf standing, the way he did everything, and set the cup down washed, which she noticed and did not remark upon.

“There’s an association clause,” she said to his back, at the door. “Article Twelve. Former combatants, no private dealings. I know exactly what it says. I helped draft the border sections.”

“I know you did.”

“Then you know it runs both ways.”

“That’s rather the point of it.” Colm put his hat back on and paused with one hand on the frame. “Nobody’s asking you to like it. Nobody’s asking you to smile at him over a scone. You just can’t have a man put back on a coach because the sight of him is inconvenient to you.” He hesitated. “For what it’s worth, I don’t think that’s what you’d want. Not really.”

“You’ve no idea what I’d want,” Hesper said pleasantly. “I’ve thirty pounds to sift. Mind the step, it’s swollen with the wet.”

· · ·Scene break

The shop was very quiet after he had gone.

She went back to the sack, because four accounts did not care who was riding into the village that afternoon, and because she needed her hands doing something exact and small before she let them do anything else. The leaf ran through her fingers, coarse and dusty-sweet. The scale wanted another half-ounce. She gave it a half-ounce, and did not watch her fingers while they did it.

Forty-nine years old. Eleven of them behind this counter, on this corner, with this one window on the lane. She had taken the building the autumn after the treaty, when the plaster was still green and nobody in Hollow Ash could say her name without putting a title in front of it, and she had worn that title down by weighing out other people’s tea until it had finally, blessedly, come off.

She did the arithmetic without meaning to, the way her mind still did arithmetic around anything from that year. Eleven years, four months and nineteen days since the surrender table. A tent on the Dunmoor side that smelled of wet canvas and burnt copper. Marshal Idony Vance signing for the Marchland with a hand that did not shake at all.

And across that table, a man doing long division on his own casualties in real time, whom she had looked at exactly once and thought, with the clean and terrible clarity of a person who has just spent everything she had: I could have liked you, in another life. I am glad there isn’t one.

There had not been one. There had been a border, a treaty, a village, a tea-house, and the account of how the war ended, which the whole Marchland now said in the same words, in the same order, every spring, on the green, with their cups up. She had listened to those words for eleven years and never corrected them. She had not decided not to, either, which was a different thing and a worse one, and she had stopped picking at the difference a long while ago, because by now the account had other people’s names in it and all of them were still alive.

The kettle began to think about boiling. She took it off before it could, and it rattled against the hob going down, and she steadied it with the other hand, and there was nobody in the shop to see the rattle or the correction.

She weighed out the last of the Tuesday blend and tied the paper, and made herself a small precise list of what the afternoon would require, because a list was a place to put things.

Broth up to Tamsin, and a note telling her not to come in tomorrow either, which she would ignore. The Wednesday order for the mill. Prue in at seven as always, wanting news and pretending not to. And a man in a room above the smithy who would have to eat somewhere, in a village with one public kitchen in it, on a provisioning order signed by Colm himself — which he had not mentioned, and which both of them had thought of.

You can be civil for four minutes twice a day, she told herself, in the voice she kept for apprentices. You have been civil to worse men for longer. You will pour, you will take his money, you will say nothing that ends up in a warden’s report, and in five years nobody will remember he came.

It was a good instruction. She was still admiring it when the coach bell sounded up the lane, a full hour before Colm had promised.

She told herself she was not going to the window.

She went to the window.

The coach was ordinary: mud to the axles, two tired bays, the driver already arguing with somebody about a box. Half the village had found a reason to be out on the street in the second week of spring, which was the greatest interest Hollow Ash had ever taken in a delivery of anything.

The man who climbed down had gone grey at both temples. She had remembered only the one. He came down the step the way men of a certain age come down steps, mindful of the knee, and then he stood in the lane with a single travelling case and did not look up at any of the people looking at him, and she understood, with an unwelcome and entirely professional accuracy, that he had taught himself to do that. Recently. On purpose. Shoulders in, chin down, occupying rather less room than a man that size was entitled to.

He had the look of somebody who had not eaten since the river.

Then one of Prue’s hens came out from under the mounting block and stopped directly in front of him, as hens do, with the total confidence of a creature that has never once been moved along by anybody.

Aurel Donnacha stopped. He looked down at the bird. And he inclined his head to it and said something — she was sixty feet away and could not hear a word of it, but she had watched enough men apologise across enough tables to know the shape of one going past — and then he stepped around it, wide, with the exaggerated care of a man crossing a room full of things he has already broken once.

The absurdity of it went through her like a hot drink taken too fast.

He looked up then. Of course he did. The whole street was watching a general walk down it with one case and no escort, and the tea-house window was the only window on the lane, and for one unguarded second, before either of them remembered what they were supposed to feel about the other, Hesper Quill and Aurel Donnacha looked at each other across sixty feet of mud.

He did not flinch. That was the thing. Everyone flinched eventually, once they worked out who she was — a small adjustment of the face, respect or fear or the horrible soft pity people kept for her hands. He simply looked at her the way one looks across a tent at the only other person in it doing the same arithmetic, and eleven years came off the distance between them like a cloth off a table.

Then he looked away first, ducked his head, and went on up the street towards the smithy.

Hesper stayed at the window a moment longer. Then she opened her right hand and found she was still holding a fistful of gunpowder green, crushed to dust and oil between her fingers. Ruined. An ounce and a half of the best leaf in the shop, weighed out not five minutes before.

“Well,” she said to the empty room. “That was efficient.”

She brushed her palm clean over the bin, twice, and went to set the kettle back on, because her hands wanted something to hold and the hob was the only place in the world where they behaved themselves. Four days, she thought. A week at the outside, before Colm’s order brought him through that door.

Time enough to decide what she would say to him.

Rather less, she suspected, to decide how much of it would be true.
