The miller’s wife was not unkind. She was a woman with sixty dinners a week to get out and no opinion she could afford to have in public, and she put the bowl down in front of him as she put it down in front of everybody, and said “Bread’s there,” and went back to the range. She had decided to be that and nothing else, and had worked out in advance what it would cost her, and had gone ahead. He recognised the arithmetic.
Nine men ate. Nobody spoke to him. Two took their bowls to the window sill and ate standing, and one of them was a carter who had drunk the three-minute green at the corner table and told his brother it was worth…
