The Warehouse

I came back the following Thursday evening with proper boots, a spare battery taped to my ankle under my sock, and a nervousness I hadn’t expected. Nothing about the terms had changed since the warehouse let me leave it once already, and I still felt it, standing at the door.

The building itself had a name, it turned out, once you were let far enough inside to be told it: the Longshore, a converted cold store two streets back from the water in Rotherhithe. Close enough that you could hear the foghorns some nights, and far enough from any road with a name on a map that a taxi driver had refused to take me past the junction. He made me walk the last quarter mile alone in the dark, muttering something about insurance.

Terry was on the door again, and this time he barely looked at my licence before waving me through, which told me more about how fast information moved inside this world than any conversation could have. He did, at least, nod at my new boots with something like approval — the closest thing to a welcome I was likely to get from him. A woman in scrubs was setting up a folding table just inside, laying out gauze and a blood pressure cuff and a laminated card of concussion questions with the brisk efficiency of someone who had done this in far worse places than a cold store.

“You’re the filmmaker,” she said, without looking up. “Sana. I’m the doctor, for whatever that’s worth in a room like this.”

“It’s worth a lot, actually.”

“Try telling that to my actual employer. I do three shifts a week at St Thomas’s and this on the side, and I get paid more here for doing less paperwork, which should tell you something about paperwork.” She snapped a glove on with a sound like a small gunshot. “Kit pays for everything on this table out of his own pocket, if you’re wondering, and he checks the receipts himself. More than I can say for half the NHS trusts I’ve worked in.”

I filed that too, the way I filed everything, a habit that was starting to feel less like professional distance and more like the only wall I had left standing between me and a story that kept trying to become a person.

The room filled differently than it had the week before, or maybe I simply saw it differently now that I knew what I was looking at. A registration table where fighters signed in under names that weren’t quite their real ones and weren’t quite fake either, nicknames worn so long they’d become load-bearing. A man counting a cash box with the door to it angled so no one behind him could see the total, though everyone in the room politely pretended not to be watching him do it. Frankie moving between three separate conversations at once, each one ending the moment he arrived and each person in it visibly relaxing once whatever he’d said had landed.

And Kit, at the centre of all of it and touching none of it directly, the way a held breath sits at the centre of a held body.

I noticed the fear first in small things. A fighter who dropped his gum shield when Kit passed too close and didn’t stop to pick it up until Kit was three steps further on. Another who answered a question Kit hadn’t finished asking, rushing to fill a silence before it could become anything else. None of it matched the fear I’d have expected of a man who could end someone’s livelihood with two words. It sat underneath that, older and less rational, the way you flinch at a loud noise long after you’ve worked out it was only a door.

“You’re staring,” Kit said, appearing at my shoulder without my having noticed him cross the room, which was becoming its own small unsettling pattern.

“I’m observing. It’s the job.”

“What are you observing.”

“That everyone in this building is careful around you in a way that doesn’t match anything you’ve actually done in front of me.” I kept my voice level, the way I would have with any subject, though nothing about this felt like any other subject I’d had. “You haven’t raised your voice once. You haven’t touched anyone. And they still move like you might.”

Something crossed his face, closer to grief than to anger. “That’s not fear of me specifically. It’s fear that predates me and just happens to be standing in the same room I’m standing in.” He said it like a fact he’d made peace with a long time ago and resented having to repeat. “I’d fix it if I could. I’ve spent three years trying. Some of it just doesn’t unstick.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“It’s the only one you’re getting tonight.” But he said it without the edge the words should have carried, and for a moment we simply stood there while a fighter I didn’t recognise shadow-boxed against the far wall, his breath fogging faintly in the cold air of a building that had spent decades keeping fish rather than people.

The fight that mattered that night, at least to me, wasn’t the headline bout. It happened at the registration table an hour before anyone had thrown a single punch, and I almost missed it because I’d stepped outside to change a card.

Sonny Vale was nineteen, or looked it, all wrist and jaw and a nervousness he hadn’t yet learned to armour the way the older fighters had. I watched him approach Kit at the edge of the room, and I watched him do the thing I’d already started to recognise, the quick unnecessary apology before he’d even said what he’d come to say.

“I need to ask you something and I know I’m not supposed to ask before a fight,” Sonny said, low enough that I had to lean my whole attention toward the shotgun mic to catch it clean. “Could I get part of tonight’s purse now. Before. Not after.”

“Why.”

“It doesn’t matter why.”

“It matters to me.” Kit’s voice didn’t rise, but something in it changed register. “Who’s asking you for money you don’t have yet, Sonny.”

“Nobody’s asking me for anything.” The lie sat so plainly on his face that even I could read it, and I had known this room for exactly two nights.

Kit looked at him for a long moment, weighing something that clearly went beyond the fifty or eighty pounds in question. “I’ll cover it,” he said finally. “Not out of tonight’s purse. Out of mine. You fight clean tonight, you don’t take a dive for anyone, and we talk properly tomorrow, in daylight, when you’re not about to step into a ring with your head somewhere else entirely.”

“I don’t need—“

“You’re nineteen and you just asked a man who runs illegal fights for an advance before you’ve thrown a punch. You need something, Sonny, and I’d rather it came from me than from wherever it’s actually coming from.” He said it gently, which was somehow worse to watch than if he’d shouted it. Sonny’s face did something complicated, gratitude and shame arriving at the same time and finding nowhere to go. “Go warm up. And eat something. You look like you haven’t since Tuesday.”

I kept the camera down through the entire exchange. Not because the terms required it — they didn’t, Sonny wasn’t Kit — but because some instinct older than any rule told me that filming it would have turned a kindness into evidence.

“You didn’t film that,” Kit said afterward, not a question, once Sonny was out of earshot.

“No.”

“Why not. It’s exactly the kind of thing your editor wants. Struggling young fighter, menacing older man throwing money around to keep him in line.” His voice had an edge on it now, testing rather than accusing. “That’s a better scene than anything I’ve given you on purpose.”

“It’s not what happened, though. And I don’t put things in my film just because they’re a better scene than the truth.”

He studied me for long enough that I became aware of my own pulse. “Most people would have filmed it anyway and worried about what it meant afterward.”

“I’m not most people. That’s the whole pitch I made to get funding for this, actually, you’d have liked the meeting.”

That got something close to a real laugh out of him, short and surprised, gone almost as soon as it arrived. For the length of it he looked ten years younger. “Get your shot list done before the main bout,” he said, already turning away, already becoming again the version of himself the room required. “You’ve got maybe six weeks left of me being interesting for reasons that have nothing to do with tonight.”

The main bout that night was Dax against a heavier man from somewhere north of the river whose name I never got and never used. He lost badly enough in the second exchange that Sana was in the ring before the crowd had finished reacting to the punch that put him down.

I had the camera up for all of it, and afterward, going back through the footage on a train home two nights later, I noticed things I hadn’t caught live, the way you always do. The heavier man’s guard dropping a fraction on his right side each time he planted his back foot, a tell Dax had clearly clocked in the first ten seconds and spent the whole first round pretending not to have seen. The exact moment the crowd’s noise changed pitch, no longer entertainment but something closer to alarm, right before Sana called it. The way Kit’s hands, usually loose at his sides, had come up slightly at his own ribs during the worst of it, an old, unconscious flinch that had nothing to do with performance.

Nobody struck the man once he was down. That rule, at least, held absolute in a building where I suspected very few rules were absolute about anything. Sana was on her knees beside him within seconds, two fingers at his throat and a penlight already out, and the whole room went quiet in a way it hadn’t for any of the fighting, an obedience that told me more about the actual chain of authority in that building than any conversation Kit and I had had.

“He’s fine,” Sana said eventually, loud enough for the room, not looking up. “Concussed, not worse. He doesn’t fight again for at least a month, and I mean that, not the version of a month where you all pretend I didn’t say it.”

“You heard her,” Kit said, to no one and everyone, and the room exhaled the way it had the week before, that same collective release that belonged to the building rather than to me, though I was starting, uncomfortably, to feel it in my own chest as well.

Dax came past afterward, unhurt, buzzing with the particular energy of a man who has just been reminded he is not made of glass. “You get that?” he asked, nodding at my camera, grinning the grin I’d already started to recognise as his default setting.

“I got it.”

“Good. Put the bit in where I said he was slower than my nan. That’s the bit that matters.” He looked past me at Kit, and something in his face sobered fractionally, not fear exactly, but its cousin, the kind of caution you extend to weather rather than to a person. “He tell you why we all watch him the way we do?”

“Not really.”

“Ask him about his brother sometime. Not tonight. Not for a while, probably. But sometime.” Dax said it lightly, already moving off toward the makeshift changing area, and I understood I’d just been handed something without being told what it was worth.

I wrote that down too, on the bus home, under a line I’d already started keeping separate from the rest of my notes, the ones I told myself weren’t research at all.

He gave a nineteen-year-old his own money and made it sound like a punishment so the boy wouldn’t have to feel like charity. Ask him about his brother, Dax said. I don’t know yet what that costs. I already know I’m going to ask.
