I had prepared for the chapel the way I prepare for anything I am afraid of, which is with slides.

The partner’s deck had it on page one. Their brand people in New York had found an old photograph of it on the estate’s website, the whitewashed gable and the plain east window with the Forth behind it, and built the whole Scottish offer round that single image. The ceremony is the product, said the note in the margin. Everything else is a room. They were not wrong. That was the trouble with the partner’s brand people. They were very rarely wrong about what would sell.

I printed page one on the machine in the estate office and folded it into my jacket, and at ten o’clock I walked down through the walled garden in the borrowed wellingtons with Priscilla beside me and did not look at the grey gate in the north wall.

The chapel stands on its own at the far end of the garden, on the edge of the headland, with a low wall round it and the sea underneath. The Victorians lengthened it when the family still had money and a great many cousins. It is white inside and out now. The slates on the roof were so new they were almost blue.

Duncan was waiting at the door with the key. He had it on a ring with nothing else.

“Ms Oyelaran,” he said. “Ms Halloway.”

“Is it locked when there’s nothing on?”

“Always.”

He opened it and stood aside, and I went in first, because I was not going to let him watch me decide whether to.

It was smaller than I remembered, and brighter. That was the whitewash. Ten years ago the walls had been grey plaster going green at the corners and the roof had let in daylight in two places, and Hector had said the damp was original and they should charge for it. Now the light came in white off every surface, and the pews were stripped and oiled, and the stone floor had been lifted and relaid, and it smelled of lime and beeswax and cold.

Twenty pews on each side of the aisle. The east window, clear glass, the sea filling it. A step up to a plain table, and a place in front of the step where a man stands.

I did not look at that place. I looked at the roof.

“Who did the timbers?”

“Me and Rab. And a joiner from Dunbar for the bits that needed a joiner.” Duncan had stayed by the door. “Two winters.”

“The lime?”

“Isla and me and a lot of students with brushes, one August.”

Priscilla had her phone out for the window, the way she had for the hall ceiling, and then she lowered it without taking the photograph and went and sat in a back pew, in the corner, where she could see us both. I have watched her do that in a hundred rooms. She calls it sitting in the gallery.

I took page one out of my jacket and unfolded it.

“This is what the partner’s built the Scottish offer around,” I said, and held it out. “This room. Not the ballroom. Every castle in Britain has a ballroom.”

He came down the aisle and took the page and looked at it. His own chapel, photographed from the garden on a clear day, with the partner’s typeface across the bottom.

“That’s from our website,” he said.

“It’s a very good photograph.”

“Isla took it.” He handed the page back. “What do they want?”

I told him. I told him well, because it is what I am for. Two ceremonies on a Saturday in season, eleven and three, with the ballroom turned between them. A smaller midweek ceremony for couples who wanted twenty guests and no reception. Vow renewals in the spring and autumn, when the house was quiet. Ceremonies for couples holding their receptions somewhere else. On days with nothing booked, the chapel open to visitors at a price, with a guide. Ninety-one dates became something close to a hundred and fifty. The spring refinancing stopped being a problem and became a footnote.

He listened to all of it without moving, the way he’d listened to Neil describe the stew.

“No,” he said.

“Which part?”

“Two in a day.”

“It’s done everywhere. It’s done in cathedrals.”

“It’s not done here.” He looked up at the roof he had put on with his own hands. “A couple gets married in here, it’s theirs that day. There’s nobody else’s confetti in the aisle behind them. Nobody waiting outside in the garden for them to hurry up.”

“That’s sentiment.”

“Yes.”

“You can’t afford sentiment. You told me yourself. The bank writes in capitals.”

“I can’t afford a lot of things,” he said. “I don’t sell that one.”

“You sell it ninety-one times a year.”

“I sell the house.” He said it quietly. “The chapel I lend.”

I didn’t follow, for a moment. Then I did, and I took out my phone and opened the rate card Isla had sent Priscilla on Sunday, the one I had read on the drive in, and looked for the line that should have been there, and it wasn’t.

“It’s not on the invoice,” I said.

“No.”

“You don’t charge for the chapel.”

“Never have.”

“Ninety-one ceremonies,” I said. “In a restored listed building. With a new roof. Which you and Rab and a joiner from Dunbar put on over two winters. And you don’t charge for it.” I heard my own voice go up, and brought it down. “That is the worst commercial decision I have ever seen in my life, and I once watched a man in Frankfurt buy a hotel without a car park.”

“Probably,” he said.

“It’s not probably. It’s arithmetic.”

“Then it’s the worst arithmetic you’ve seen.” He did not raise his voice at all. He did not need to; the chapel did it for him, took his words and laid them out along the whitewash. “I’m not taking money for this room. Not from them, not from your partner. If they want the house, they can have the ballroom twice a day for all I care. They can have the garden and the glasshouses and the car park you think I haven’t got. This stays out of it.”

“Then there’s no deal. You understand that. The partner built the entire offer on this photograph. It’s page one.”

“Then take it off page one.”

“It isn’t mine to take off.”

“It’s your name on the heads of terms.”

“It’s a room,” I said. “It’s whitewash and slate and a table. It’s a room with a licence and a view, and you’ve spent two winters making it beautiful, and now you want to give it away to strangers every Saturday and borrow against the house to pay for it.”

“You’d know,” he said.

It went into the chapel like a stone into still water.

“Meaning?”

He didn’t answer. He didn’t need to. He looked at me, and then, for the first time since I had walked in, he let himself look at the place in front of the step, and then back at me. That was the whole of it. He had stood there. I knew how long, because Isla had told me how many orders of service she collected, and you cannot collect two hundred and sixty of anything quickly.

I folded page one and put it in my jacket.

“The numbers stand,” I said. “Whatever you think the room is.”

“I know they do.” He took the key out of his pocket. “I’ll lock up when you’ve gone. Take as long as you want.”

He walked back up the aisle past Priscilla, and nodded to her, and went out. The door swung to behind him on its new hinges, and did not bang.

Priscilla stayed in the back pew. I stood by the step with my hands in my pockets and looked at the sea through the window until it stopped moving.

“So,” she said eventually. “You two weren’t arguing about throughput.”

“We were arguing about throughput.”

“Wren, he said lend.” She got up and came down the aisle. “You heard him. You heard lend and you went for the rate card, which I respect, and then you called his chapel a room with a licence, which I don’t think was about the partner’s deck.”

“It was about the partner’s deck.”

“Then here’s my read on the partner’s deck.” Priscilla stopped beside me. She was a head taller than me in trainers, and she put her hands in her own pockets, so we were a pair. “He won’t sign anything with that chapel on page one. Not at any price. You could double it. So we take it off.”

“The partner wants it on page one.”

“Then the partner can marry him,” Priscilla said, and went out into the garden, and left me the whole white room.

My father rang at two, as he always rings: without warning and at the exact moment when I would have preferred him not to.

“Darling. How’s the castle?”

Gordon Halloway is sixty-four, and sounds forty on the phone. He has a voice that has talked nineteen hotels into existence and he uses all of it on everyone, including me, including the man who delivers the paper. I took him in the library, which was empty, with the door shut and my back to the fire.

“Did you know it was Kerrow?”

“Since the start.”

“And you didn’t tell me.”

“You’d have sent Priscilla.” He said it fondly, as if it were a thing we both found amusing about me. “Priscilla’s marvellous, she can close anyone in Europe, but she can’t close a Scotsman. Nobody can close a Scotsman who hasn’t sat at his table. I thought you’d rather not know until you were in the air.”

“You thought I’d rather not have the choice.”

“I thought you’d make the right one, and you have. Now. Where are we?”

Where we were was a man who would not charge for his chapel and a partner who had built their offer on it, and a deadline on Friday, and me. I did what I do. I gave my father the part he wanted in the shape he liked. The vendor was engaged and reasonable. The house was in better order than the survey suggested. I would have the heads agreed by Thursday. There was a difficulty with the chapel which I was handling, and I would need latitude.

“What sort of difficulty?”

“Sentimental.”

“Ah.” A pause, in which I could hear him deciding how much to mind. “Well, you know where sentiment goes, darling. It goes on the price.”

“It doesn’t, with him.”

“It does with everyone. Offer him a bit more on the house and let him keep his little church. Wrap it in something he can say yes to.”

“I’ll need Friday without calls from you,” I said. “Or from the board.”

“The board will want updates.”

“The board will get them from me. On Friday. Signed or not.”

He liked that. He always liked it when I pushed back in a way he could describe to other people later. “That’s my girl,” he said. “And Wren. Don’t let him make it about the past. The past is settled.”

“I know,” I said.

“Wonderful. You’re wonderful.”

He rang off. I stood in the library with my phone in my hand and my back to the fire, and understood that I had just managed my father for eleven minutes, handled him the way he handles a planning committee, given him a version with a small turn at the end, and that he had thanked me for it and called me wonderful, and that I had wanted him to. I was thirty-two years old. I had been doing it since I was nine.

I did not like the woman who had made that call. I had not liked her for some time. She was very good at her job.

· · ·Scene break

That evening I sat in the window seat in East Two with my laptop and the partner’s deck, and watched the wind come up off the sea. The garden hedges were moving. The chapel roof caught the last of the light and went dark.

At nine Isla knocked. She did not come in.

“Warning’s gone to amber for tomorrow,” she said. “Wind from about four, the worst of it after dark. If the power goes there’s a torch in your bedside drawer.” She paused. “Duncan wanted you told.”

“Thank you.”

When she had gone I opened the drawer. The torch was there, rubber-cased, the kind that lives in every hotel bedside and is never found when needed. It was lying next to the ring box. Somebody had put it in on the Saturday before I arrived, and the box had joined it on Sunday, and they had been lying side by side in the dark for two days, one of them useful.

I shut the drawer. I opened the deck. I took the chapel off page one and put the ballroom there instead, with the bar moved to the inside wall, and I wrote in the margin, for the partner’s brand people, in the plainest words I have: The chapel is not for sale. It is not on the invoice. Build without it.

Then I sent it to Priscilla, before I could draft it again.
