The second cellar box turned out to hold nothing but framing invoices and a dead moth, and the third held Anselm’s father’s old exhibition posters, rolled and brittle, none of it touching HKB or the eighteen months or anything Jo could carry back into the study and call progress. She logged the null result anyway, the way she’d logged every null result since January, because an empty box told her where not to look again, which was its own kind of ground gained.

“You’re disappointed,” Anselm said, watching her seal the last folder.

“I’m thorough. Disappointment’s a feeling about how a fact makes me feel. This is just a fact.” She said it lightly enough that he almost smiled, and she let herself notice that she’d been trying, lately, to make him do that more often than the case strictly required.
