He had kept his word about the morning after the break-in, in the smallest way available to him at half past nine with no sleep behind him: a call to the insurer’s fraud disclosure line, a name, a case reference, a promise to follow with a full written statement the moment he could leave the hospital for longer than an hour. It was the follow-up meeting itself, the one that actually mattered, that had waited until Els was well enough to hear he was keeping it without wondering whether he’d chosen the meeting over her.
Els was moved to a ward with a window by Thursday, propped up against pillows that looked marginally less institutional than the ones from the first night, and told Anselm, the moment he arrived, that she was well enough to be treated like a person again rather than a patient everyone spoke over.
