Eight Years, Two Floors

Nora had exactly one rule for walking into a new client’s building the first morning: don’t let them see you flinch. She was still telling herself that at eight fifty-nine, pushing through the revolving door into a lobby that smelled like the cargo warehouse this building used to be before someone laid glass and steel over it like a nice suit over a workman’s boots — diesel and salt water rising up through the polished concrete underneath. Through the wall of windows behind the security desk, she could see the actual docks, cranes stacked against a gray sky, containers waiting in their color-coded rows for ships that cost more to run than they earned.

She had dressed for this the way she dressed for every first day with a new client: the charcoal suit that made her look older than twenty-nine, the red pen clipped inside her jacket where her hand could find it without looking. Armor, Dara called it. Nora called it professionalism and had stopped arguing the distinction years ago.

“Ms. Vasquez?” A man in his late fifties came toward her across the lobby at a pace just short of hurrying, hand already extended, tie a fraction loose, like he’d tightened it twice already and given up on a third attempt. “Desmond Achebe. Chief financial officer. Cal said you’d be arriving at nine and it’s nine, so I assume that’s not a coincidence.”

“It’s not.”

“No. I imagine not.” He said it like a man filing away evidence. His handshake was firm but his eyes kept flicking toward the elevator bank, toward the floor indicator, toward anything that wasn’t quite her face. “We’ve set up the executive conference room for your team. Just you today, I understand, though the engagement letter mentions analysts joining next week.”

“Two, once I’ve confirmed the scope.” Nora fell into step beside him toward the elevators. “I’ll need full system access by end of day. Financial reporting, the treasury function, vessel-level P&L, everything the board audit committee sees and anything they don’t.”

Desmond’s jaw did something complicated. “That’s a broad ask for a first morning.”

“It’s the only ask that matters. If I’m reviewing what someone’s decided to show me, I’m not auditing, I’m attending a presentation.” She kept her voice level, the way she always did when she was laying down a term she intended to hold regardless of the reaction. “I was told the board approved full scope before the contract went out. If that’s changed since yesterday, I’d like to know now, so I can go back to my office and bill you for a wasted morning instead of a wasted month.”

He laughed, a short, surprised sound, like she’d told a joke he hadn’t expected to find funny. “No. No, it hasn’t changed. Cal was very specific that you get whatever you ask for.” The elevator arrived, and he held the door with one arm the way older men of a certain generation did, a habit that had nothing to do with her threat level, more to do with how he’d been raised. “He’s been specific about a number of things, regarding your engagement.”

“Has he.”

“He asked me not to prepare you.” Desmond’s eyes finally landed on hers, and there was something almost apologetic in them, a colleague warning another colleague about weather. “For what it’s worth, I don’t think that was strategy — I think it’s just how he does things. He likes rooms to happen the way they happen.”

The elevator doors opened onto the top floor, and the smell of diesel gave way to coffee and recycled air, glass-walled offices running the length of the building with the harbor laid out below them like something under glass in a museum. Desmond led her past a bank of empty desks, a floor that felt understaffed the way companies get when people have started quietly job-hunting.

A woman intercepted them near the elevator bank, tall, silver-streaked hair pulled back hard enough to look like a decision rather than a style, a tablet held against her chest like a shield. “You must be Ms. Vasquez. Lena Whitfield, board chair.” Her handshake was brief and assessing. “I voted against this engagement. Not because I doubt your competence — because a CEO handpicking his own auditor is a conflict this board should have refused to approve. I intend to watch this process closely enough that it doesn’t become one.”

“I’d be more worried if you weren’t watching,” Nora said. “Feel free to request my working papers at any point. I have nothing in them I wouldn’t hand you directly.”

Something that wasn’t quite approval crossed Lena’s face before she nodded once and walked on. A younger man had drifted into the space she left behind, mid-thirties, expensively unremarkable suit, a smile that arrived slightly before it was warranted. “Marcus Voss, COO. Whatever you need from operations, my door’s open before you even have to ask. I’d rather get ahead of a problem than watch someone else find it first.” He said it warmly, and it landed a half-degree too eager, the kind of helpfulness that made Nora file his name without deciding yet what the file was for.

Desmond steered her onward with the faint relief of a man who had successfully run interference, to a conference room with REYES MARITIME etched into frosted glass and, through it, an empty table long enough to seat fourteen.

“I’ll get you set up with credentials,” Desmond said. “Can I bring you anything? Coffee, water—“

“I’m fine. Thank you.”

He hesitated at the door, the way people did when they had one more thing to say and weren’t sure it was theirs to say. “For what it’s worth, Ms. Vasquez. Whatever you find in this building. I’d rather know than not know. I’ve been trying to say that to the board for two years and nobody wants to hear it from inside the house.” He left before she could answer, which she suspected was deliberate, a man giving himself no chance to walk the sentence back.

She used the minutes alone to do what she always did in a new room: read it before anyone came back to perform for her. The conference table was real walnut, old enough to have come from the original warehouse offices, scarred along one edge in a way no designer would have chosen and no executive had bothered to refinish. A framed black-and-white photograph hung near the door — a cargo ship being loaded by hand, decades before containers existed — and a small brass plate beneath it read simply T. Reyes, Chairman, no date, no explanation. The kind of modest credit a man leaves when he wants people to know he was there without asking them to make anything of it. Whatever this building had become, it hadn’t forgotten what it used to be. She wondered, not for the first time that morning, whether the same was true of the man who owned it now.

She had barely set her bag down when the door opened again, without a knock, without so much as a pause to check whether the room was occupied.

Cal Reyes filled the doorway the way he’d filled every doorway she remembered — completely, without seeming to try. Eight years had settled into him the way they didn’t settle into everyone. The boy who’d been handsome in an aggressive, over-confident way — someone who’d never lost an argument that mattered to him — had become a man who looked like he’d lost several, and was still deciding what to do about it. Dark hair cut short and a little impatiently. A jaw that hadn’t softened. Eyes the exact color she remembered, and remembering that detail annoyed her more than the eyes themselves did.

“You’re taller than I remember,” she said, because it was true, and because she needed to say something that wasn’t the first thing that had occurred to her, which was that he looked tired in a way that had nothing to do with sleep.

“You’re exactly as I remember.” Cal closed the door behind him, still without having knocked, and she noted that too, next to Desmond’s warning. “Though I don’t recall you being allergic to hello.”

“Hello, Cal.”

“There it is.” Something crossed his face, gone before she could name it, and he crossed the room instead of dwelling on it, dropping into the chair across from her like he owned the furniture, which, technically, he did. “Eight years. You look like you’ve been winning.”

“I have been.”

“I noticed. Four write-ups in the trade press this year. One where they called you the person companies hire when they’ve stopped believing their own board.” He said it without irony, which surprised her more than praise would have. “That’s a hell of a reputation to build from a summer internship that ended with you storming out of a training program.”

“I didn’t storm. I left.” She set her pen down on the table between them, deliberately, a small declaration. “There’s a difference, and you’d know it if you’d ever once followed up to check whether the model you humiliated me over was wrong.”

“It wasn’t wrong.” Cal said it flatly, no defensiveness in it, which threw her more than an argument would have. “I ran the real numbers four years later. Out of curiosity. You were off by under two percent. For a twenty-one-year-old with no Bloomberg terminal and three days’ notice, that’s not a rounding error — it’s a better model than half the ones my own team builds now with a full department behind them.”

She hadn’t expected that. She’d built an entire company on the assumption that he’d never once thought about that room again. Hearing him recite her own numbers back to her, corrected for the years neither of them had spoken, put a crack in a wall she’d trusted for eight years to hold.

“You never told me that.”

“You never gave me the chance. You left the pipeline within a week.” He leaned back, and for a moment the charm dropped entirely, leaving something plainer underneath it, harder to look at directly. “I looked for you, for about a year, if it matters. Not to apologize properly — I didn’t know how yet, and I couldn’t have explained it to a partner meeting anyway. Then you’d disappeared into your own firm, and I told myself it wasn’t my business anymore.”

“It wasn’t.”

“No. It wasn’t.” He let that sit for a second, then reached across the table and turned her copy of the engagement letter around to face him, all business again so fast it was almost a relief. “Desmond give you full access?”

“He’s setting it up.”

“Good. I meant it when I said you get whatever you ask for.” Cal tapped the table once, decisive. “Fuel-hedge reporting’s a mess. The West Coast terminal’s bleeding on labor costs nobody’s explained to my satisfaction. And there’s a fraud allegation buried in an anonymous letter to the audit committee — the board’s pretending it’s nothing until someone proves it’s something. I want you to prove which.”

“That’s not in the engagement letter.”

“It’s in the engagement letter now.” Cal reached into his jacket, pulled out a folded printout, and slid it across the table. An anonymous letter, addressed to the audit committee, three paragraphs of vague accusation about “irregular subsidiary transfers” with no names attached. “It came in six weeks ago. The board’s official position is that it’s a disgruntled vendor with an axe to grind. I want an actual answer, not a position.”

“You could have hired someone quieter. Someone who wouldn’t ask you personal questions in your own conference room.”

“I could have. I didn’t want quiet.” He said it simply, no performance in it. “Quiet is what my father did for a decade. It’s most of the reason I inherited a company six weeks from a bank calling its loan. I want someone who’ll walk into this building and tell every person in it, including me, exactly what the numbers say — whether or not it’s convenient.”

“And if what the numbers say is that you’re the problem.”

“Then you tell the board that too.” He didn’t look away when he said it, which she noticed, and hated that she noticed. “I asked for you because you’re the one person who’s ever told me no and meant it. I need that in this building right now more than I need someone who’s going to be careful with my feelings.”

The room went quiet in a way that had nothing to do with volume. Outside the glass, a crane swung a container across the gray sky in a slow, patient arc, and Nora found herself watching it instead of him, because watching him felt like standing too close to something with a current she hadn’t agreed to touch.

“Why’d you really say yes, Nora?” Cal asked, quieter now, the question dropping into the space between them like something he hadn’t planned to ask out loud. “Because I know what the contract pays, and I know what your rule is — I looked that up too. Rent doesn’t explain saying yes to me. So what does?”

She opened her mouth to answer with the version she’d rehearsed for Dara, the eight months of runway, the two analysts she needed to hire, all of it true and none of it, she realized with a small, unwelcome jolt, the whole answer.

The question sat there, unanswered, taking up more room than it should have.
