Adela left the piece of paper at home and arrived at Oswin’s door with nothing to read from.
He was ready, coat on, shoes tied, the work bag gone from the table behind him.
“Morning,” he said.
“Morning.”
They kissed. Neither tried to make it say they had already settled everything.
He locked the door and they walked uphill towards the allotments. Their first visit had ended at a gate with a sign saying the public path continued in a direction neither had believed. This time they knew to go through the narrow gap beside the shed and follow the wall.
The ground was wet. Adela had worn sensible boots, which gave her one small thing she could be pleased about before they began.
“I know why I was going to take the cover,” Oswin said.
She looked at him.
