Frost-Ink

“It’s frost-ink,” Rurik Bane said, and put his thumb over the witness mark as if it might get away. “Where’d you get a march field record?”

“It isn’t a field record. It’s my mother’s ledger.”

The steward took his thumb off the page and looked at Ilse properly for the first time since Lowcross. They were on the undercroft stair beneath the keep’s east tower, at its one arrow slit. The war rolls lived below in iron-bound chests that had not been opened in a decade, but the cellar itself was a degree or two above freezing, as cellars are, and frost-ink would not come up in it; so everything had to be read here, in the draught off the snow. Ilse had come down at first light with a lamp, the ledger, and a list. Rurik had come down twenty minutes later with a second lamp and the air of a man who had been told to help and intended to be seen doing it grudgingly.

“Then your mother had a march clerk witness a page,” he said. “Or somebody who’d served with one. Nobody else carries frost-ink. It’s no use to anyone who doesn’t live in a winter.”

“Explain it to me as if I’m a Reader and not a child.”

“Hm.” He almost smiled. “In the war, the Warden’s orders went up to the Gap by runner. Runners get caught. So the clerks wrote them in ink that only shows below freezing. You take one into a warm tent, it’s a blank sheet. You read it on a sentry wall in January, it’s an order.” He tapped the chest beside him. “Every roll in here’s the same. We had to read the whole war outdoors.”

Ilse looked at the two words in the gutter of her mother’s page. Witnessed. E. Vael. They had come up out of the frost last night by candlelight, forty miles into the winter, and she had sat with them until the candle went out.

“Then it was written here,” she said. “At the march. In cold enough air to take.”

“Or it was written anywhere and it only shows here.” Rurik shrugged. “Can’t tell you which. Can tell you who taught the Vael brothers their letters, though, because it was me, and if that’s Emeric’s hand I’ll know it.”

· · ·Scene break

It was Emeric’s hand.

It took them the morning to be sure. The war rolls were in no order that Ilse would have accepted in Brennock, and every one of them had to be carried up the stair and read at the arrow slit, where the air coming off the snow was cold enough to bring the ink up grey on the page. Rurik read the ones he remembered and Ilse read the rest. By noon she had a stack of orders signed E. Vael, Captain of the Gap, and she laid her mother’s ledger beside them on the sill and did what the guild had taught her to do with a disputed signature, which was to stop looking at the words and look at the pen.

The same hurried downstroke on the V. The same habit of lifting the pen before the end of the l, as if the writer had always been called away to something.

“That’s him,” Rurik said. His voice had gone rough. He cleared his throat and said it again, as a report. “That’s the Captain’s hand.”

“Yes.”

She wrote it down, because that was what one did. Witness mark compared with eleven field orders under the same signature. Consistent in letterforms, pressure and ink. Identified by R. Bane, who taught the witness to write. Then she went back into the rolls, because a witness put a man at a page but not a page at a place, and she needed both.

She found her mother at three in the afternoon, in a pay roster.

It was a thin document, a single sheet for the garrison at the Gap in the last week of the war: names, ranks, the pay owed to each, and down the right-hand side the column in which a crown auditor confirmed that the pay had been counted out. Two hundred and eleven men. Beside each, the same neat initials in the same neat hand, the hand Ilse had learned to write by copying.

B.R.

At the bottom: Counted at the Gap watchtower, eighth night. B. Rooke, Reader, for the Crown. Received, E. Vael.

Ilse sat down on the edge of a chest because her knees had decided to.

“What?” Rurik said.

“My mother was at the Gap.” She heard her own voice go flat and procedural, the counter voice, and let it. “On the eighth night. Counting the garrison’s pay. The night before your captain died.”

Rurik came and read it over her shoulder. He was quiet for long enough that she looked up.

“I remember her,” he said slowly. “A woman from the city with a satchel. Rode up to the Gap with the pay chest when nobody else would, because the crown wouldn’t release the money unless a Reader saw it into the men’s hands.” He rubbed his beard. “I thought she was brave or stupid. Emeric said she was the only honest thing the crown had sent us all war.”

Ilse folded her hands on her knee to keep them still. Her mother had come home from the north, eleven years ago, thinner, and gone back to her counter, and never once in eleven years said the word Gap in Ilse’s hearing. She had taught Ilse the vow and the rule of presence and how to fold a ledger for travel. She had not mentioned that she had carried a pay chest up a mountain into a war, or that a captain there had called her the only honest thing the crown had sent.

“She never told me,” Ilse said.

“Aye, well.” Rurik picked up the roster and put it very carefully back in its chest, as if it were a thing that could still be hurt. “Nobody who was up there tells anybody.”

· · ·Scene break

The treasury clerk arrived two days later, as the light went, while Ilse was still working through the rolls.

Ilse heard the horn from the undercroft and came up to find the courtyard full of steaming horses and one young man in treasury blue being handed down from his saddle by two march soldiers who did not trouble to hide their amusement. It was Dorran. She would have known him anywhere: the satchel, the pleased expression, the way he looked around the keep’s snowbound yard as if he were already composing the report.

“Reader Rooke.” He bowed, a little too deeply. “I carry letters from the Treasurer. For the Lord Warden, and for the march council, and for you.”

“You rode ahead of the Justice.”

“I rode ahead to save time.” He handed her a sealed packet. “The Treasurer is anxious that the inquiry not be prolonged.”

The march council met that evening in the great hall, where somebody had built a fire in the hearth for the first time in Ilse’s stay, which told her more than anything else about how seriously the keep took a letter from Brennock. There were nine of them round the long table: Casimir at the head in a dark coat, Rurik at his shoulder, four captains, the healer, a quartermaster, and a grey-faced man from the Lowcross mill who had come in over the snow and kept his cap in his lap. Ilse sat at the foot with her mother’s ledger and Dorran beside her, and understood from the way the captains looked at her that she was not there as a guest.

Casimir broke the Treasurer’s seal and read the letter aloud in his public voice.

It was a good letter. Ilse could admire it professionally even as it did its work. Treasurer Stane regretted the Lord Warden’s long burden. He noted that a lawful instrument now existed by which the winter might be ended. He trusted that the council would assist the Reader in bringing the matter to a close by setting a date for payment at the Justice’s hearing. He enclosed, for the Reader’s attention, certain questions.

Casimir handed the questions down the table without reading them. Ilse read them.

The first four were procedural. The fifth was not.

Does the Reader hold, or has she held, any private interest in the debtor, recorded or unrecorded, which might incline her against collection?

She did not look at Casimir. She could feel him not looking at her.

“The Treasurer makes a fair point.” That was Captain Hild Varro, a lean woman with a burn scar down one side of her neck and the flat patience of someone who had been angry for eleven years and stopped expecting it to change anything. “Not about the Reader. About the winter. If there’s a way to end it, the march has a right to know when.”

“The march has a right to know what ending it costs,” said the quartermaster.

“I know what it costs. I held that wall.” Varro’s hand went to her neck without her seeming to notice. “I also carried eleven of Lowcross into the ice-house this year. I’d like to know which of those two the council thinks I’ve forgotten.”

The miller turned his cap round in his hands.

“Enough.” Casimir did not raise his voice. He didn’t have to; the hall quietened around him as if it were used to it. “Reader Rooke holds the page. It’s her book. Not the council’s and not mine. Reader, tell us what the law allows.”

It was the first time anyone had asked her that, here, in front of witnesses. Ilse stood up, which she had not planned to do, and found that her hands were steady.

“An unwitnessed page may be sealed for inquiry,” she said. “I sealed this one in Brennock, in front of the Treasurer’s clerk, who is sitting beside me. While it is sealed, nobody may call it. Not the council. Not the Treasurer. Not the Justice.” She let that sit. “The holder must see for herself where the debt was struck, and certify its origin, before the inquiry closes. I have found a witness mark since I arrived. I have not yet established where the page was struck or how it came to bind. Until I have, I will not certify it, and nobody will set a date.”

“The Treasurer,” Dorran began.

“The Treasurer can write to me as often as he likes, and I’ll answer every question I’m lawfully obliged to.” Ilse turned to him. “I declare the inquiry open under guild law, in the presence of the march council, on this date. Write that down. I’ll sign it. My inquiry closes on the twentieth day from my arrival, at the Justice’s hearing, and not an hour before, and I will be ready for it.”

Nobody said anything for a moment. Varro was looking at her with an expression Ilse couldn’t read and didn’t try to.

Then Casimir said, “So recorded,” and Rurik, who was not a clerk, took the minute book and wrote it down in his square schoolmaster’s hand.

“And the fifth question?” Varro asked. “The private interest?”

Ilse looked down at the paper in her hand.

Recorded or unrecorded.

“I’m a Reader,” she said. “When I’m lawfully asked, under the vow, I’ll answer. A letter from the Treasurer isn’t the vow.”

It was true. It was also, she knew, not an answer, and every person at that table knew it too. She sat down.

· · ·Scene break

Casimir found her afterwards at the arrow slit on the undercroft stair, where she had gone because the war rolls were there and because nobody else would be.

“You didn’t need to do that,” he said. “Declare it in front of the council. You could have written to the Justice.”

“The council needed to hear it from the person who holds the page. Otherwise they’d hear it from Dorran.” She kept her eyes on the snow outside. “You didn’t need to say it’s her book.”

“It is your book.”

“You could have said it’s a crown matter. It would have been easier for you with Varro.”

“It would have been easier for me,” he agreed. “It would also have been untrue, and you’d have looked at me the way you looked at the chandler.”

She almost laughed. It surprised her. It had been a long day.

He was quiet for a moment, standing a careful step below her on the stair, and then he said in the plain voice, “Rurik told me what you found. The roster.”

“She was there.” Ilse turned the lamp down a little, for no reason except that it gave her hands something to do. “The night before your brother died, my mother carried the garrison’s pay up that mountain and counted it into two hundred and eleven hands, and signed it, and came home, and in eleven years she never said the word Gap to me. Not once. I learned to write by copying her hand. I thought I knew every line of it.”

Casimir didn’t say anything consoling. She was grateful for that.

“Emeric wrote to me that week,” he said after a while. “The last letter I had from him. Most of it was about supplies. At the end he said a Reader had come up with the pay, and she was the first person from the city he’d ever met who didn’t look at the Gap as if it were a line on a map.” He hesitated. “I never knew it was your mother he meant. I’m sorry. I should have asked.”

“You were twenty-six and your brother was dying.”

“Still.”

Ilse looked out at the white slope under the dark, at the place where the watchtower stood on the ridge with its signal fire laid ready, as it had presumably been laid ready eleven years ago when her mother climbed up to it with a chest of coin.

Whatever her mother had written in this book, she had written it after that night. Or on it.

“Tomorrow,” she said, “I need to talk to whoever nursed you.”
