At five to seven he was sitting at the kitchen table over the shut bakery with his phone face up in front of him and the envelope beside it, and he heard her door.
The latch, lifted, because it stuck. Her shoes on the passage boards.
He stood up. It was the second chair, and he had sat in it because she was not in the room, and now she was going to be; that was the whole of the rule, and he kept it one more morning.
He had been in since half past six. He had told Jas the night before that he would be, and Jas had looked at him over her flask and said, “Right,” and nothing else, and at half past six she had let him up the outside stair without a word and gone back into the front room and left the door half…
