Six weeks later Talia arrived in Kastelmark with a train ticket she had bought herself and two days of leave she had asked for without apology. Edvard met her on the platform, not at the guarded exit. His coat was buttoned wrong. She kissed him before telling him so.
The first month apart had included a visit he nearly missed because parliament extended a hearing, one train she had missed because a clinic meeting mattered more, and two arguments by phone that they had finished by asking ordinary questions instead of inventing motives. She had not returned to prove that distance was easy. She had returned because the life she was making had a place for him in it, and he had made a place for the person she actually was.
