Talia arrived at Edvard’s apartment on Thursday with an overnight bag and no explanation for it. On Wednesday she had traded the summit hotel for a month-to-month flat across the river, paid from her own invoices. She had eaten dinner with Runa and slept in her own bed there. On Thursday she had spent the day editing her regional commission bid. None of those things had been arranged to prove she was free to be here. They were the shape of her life, which she was bringing with her.
“I can still take you home,” he said when he saw the bag.
“I know. I don’t want you to.”
He took the bag only when she handed it to him. She liked the gesture enough to kiss him in the hallway, impatient for the distance between them to vanish. He answered, then paused with his forehead close to hers.
