Tamsin's Line

The weather turned on the twentieth, as weather in border country does: three days of rain, and then a morning so clear and cold that the puddles in the lane had skinned over and the smoke off every chimney in Hollow Ash went straight up like a row of ruled lines.

Aurel had been awake since five. He had planed the swollen window, which had taken forty minutes and wanted doing again in the summer when the wood had given up its water; he had put a new wedge in Trewin’s drawknife, the one that had been hanging broken on the bench, and had honed it, and had found the edge still good under the rust, which pleased him out of all proportion to the facts. It was a decent tool that had been left to a wet room. That was all.

He set it back on its nails and did not leave a note about it, because a note would have been a private dealing with a man who had asked, reasonably, not to be involved.

“Half past eight, sir,” Dabrel said from the doorway, with a face on him.

“I am going.”

“I’d sooner go myself.”

“You have gone for two days,” Aurel said, “and on the second day the whole street watched you carry my dinner up this lane like a man fetching a general’s field kit, and by evening they had decided I was too proud to be seen eating. Which is worse than the truth and harder to correct.” He took his coat off the hook. “I will go at the hour, I will sign the paper, I will eat what is given to me, and the street may look. That is the arrangement. It is not improved by hiding in it.”

“Very good, sir.” A pause. “Item four’s boots.”

“Item four is aspirational, Dabrel.”

The lane had frozen into ruts overnight and there was a skin of ice on the horse trough. He counted the distance without meaning to. Sixty feet to the corner; he had that much of the village memorised now, which said something about the size of his life that he preferred not to examine on an empty stomach.

The bell over the door rang. It was warm inside, and smelled of bacon and wet wool and something green and sharp underneath, and there were seven people in the room.

There was also a girl behind the counter, and the girl was not Hesper Quill.

· · ·Scene break

She was young — twenty-one, twenty-two — with her sleeves pinned back and a scoop in her hand, and she had stopped dead the instant the bell went.

Aurel had been read by a great many rooms in the last four days. He had learned, in the way one learns a language badly and at speed, to tell the kinds apart: the room that goes quiet and then loud again, which is curiosity; the room that goes quiet and stays quiet, which is fear, and passes; the room where one man watches you steadily from a doorway, which is certainty, and does not.

This was none of them. This was one person, and every other person in the room turning to watch that one person, and the noise dropping out of the place like water out of a cracked jug.

He stopped at the mat, which was as far in as he had gone since the first morning. He put the docket on the near end of the counter with the pen on top of it and did not push it across.

“Good morning,” he said. “The provisioning order, half past eight. I am to sign in front of the house.”

“I know what you are.”

“Yes.”

The girl set the scoop down. Her hands were steady. He noticed because he had spent the better part of a week noticing hands in this shop and pretending that he was not.

“My name is Tamsin Brook,” she said. “I’ve worked this counter four years. Before that I lived at Crossing Fold in the north valleys with my mother and my father and my brother.” She said it in order, like an inventory, which he understood: it is how a person gets through a thing they have said before and never got easier. “My brother’s name was Wat. He was seventeen. He was carrying water up from the beck when your riders came down into the Fold, and he was still holding the yoke when they found him, and my mother wouldn’t have the yoke buried with him because she said it wasn’t his, it was the parish’s.”

The room did not make a sound.

The tenth year, some accountant at the back of his mind said, before he could stop it. The valleys. The autumn of the tenth year.

He put that down where he put everything from that year, and shut the lid on it, because there was nothing at the bottom of it that would be of the slightest use to the girl standing in front of him.

“Wat Brook,” Aurel said.

“Don’t.”

“You asked me his name.”

“I told you his name. That’s not the same.” Her chin had come up. Her eyes were bright and furious and entirely dry. “I’ve had four years of people saying it back to me soft, like it’s a hymn. You’ll not do it. I’m not having his name in your mouth to make this easier for you.”

“No,” he said. “That is fair.”

“I’m not serving you.” Her voice was not loud. That was the part he would think about afterwards, in the room above the forge: that she did not shout, and that her hands were steadier than his had been. “You can eat. I’m not stopping anybody from eating. But it won’t be off my hands, not today and not any day, and if that’s a breach of the treaty then the warden can come and tell me so himself.”

· · ·Scene break

The curtain at the back moved, and Hesper Quill came through it wiping her hands on her apron.

Aurel had a clear view of the whole room and he used it, because that was the other thing he had learned to do in the last four days, and it was not a habit he was proud of. Prue Haddon at the corner table with her cup halfway up and her eyes going from face to face. Two carters by the stove, both of whom had stood on the green on the fourteenth. The miller’s man at the end. Trewin, with a mug, looking at the ceiling.

Seven witnesses. Whatever was said next would be in every kitchen in the village by dark, and it would be said about her.

He had the sentence ready — I will go, it is no trouble — and he had got as far as drawing breath when Hesper put her hand flat on the counter next to Tamsin’s scoop.

“Tamsin doesn’t serve who she doesn’t choose to serve,” she said. “Not to him, not to the warden, not to a councillor of the Marchland if one walked in wanting a bun. That’s how this house has run for four years and that’s how it goes on running, and anybody who has an opinion about it can have it outside where the air’s fresher.”

Nobody moved.

“General. There’s bacon and a barley loaf and it’s getting cold. I’ll serve you myself. Sign your paper.”

She had not softened one word of it for him and she had not softened one word of it for the room, and Aurel, who had spent eleven years watching people arrange themselves around the fact of him, understood that he had just watched a woman decline to arrange anything at all.

He signed the docket. Hesper turned the book, entered the line, initialled it, and set the plate down at the near end of the counter, and the cup beside it, and said nothing further.

He took them both up.

“I will eat outside, if the house has no objection.”

“It’s four degrees out there and there’s ice on the trough.”

“Then it will cool quickly and I shall not linger over it.” He got it out level. He had a good deal of practice at level. “Mistress Brook has said a thing in front of seven people that cost her something to say, and if I sit at your window for nine minutes she will have to stand at her own counter and look at me having taken no notice of it. I would rather not make her pay for it twice.”

Tamsin’s head came up. She looked at him with an expression he could not read at all and did not feel entitled to try.

“That’s not you being decent,” she said. “That’s you being clever.”

“It may be both,” Aurel said. “I have not been decent for long enough to know the difference yet.”

And he took the plate out into the cold.

· · ·Scene break

He ate standing, under the eave, with his back to the wall of the tea-house and the plate held up the way a man eats on a march, which was not dignified and was warmer than the alternative. The bacon was good. The bread was better. The tea went cold in about ninety seconds and he drank it anyway, and the sun came up over the mill roof and put a hard bright line down the middle of the frozen lane, and two women crossed to the far side to avoid him, and a small boy stared at him from the doorway of the chandler’s until somebody pulled him in.

The door opened. Prue Haddon came out with her cup still in her hand and stood beside him, not close, arranging herself at the exact distance a woman stands from a man she intends to be seen standing near.

“You’ll be the one that mended Trewin’s drawknife.”

“How—“

“Sixty feet of street and one window on it, and my chair’s by that window.” She drank some of her tea. “Eleven years I’ve been first through that door in the morning. I’ve watched that girl come in here at eighteen with nothing and I’ve watched Hesper make a tradeswoman out of her, and I’ve never once heard her raise her voice until today, so you’ll not be getting any sympathy from me.”

“I have not asked for any.”

“No, you haven’t. That’s the trouble with you.” Prue looked out across the lane, perfectly placid. “My son was at the Dunmoor Line. That’s all I’ll say to you about it this morning, and I’ll thank you not to make a speech at me about it, because I’ve had eleven years of speeches and not one of them has been worth the breath.”

Aurel stood with the cold plate in his hand.

“No speech,” he said.

“Good. There’s hope for you.” She finished her tea, and turned to go in, and then paused with her hand on the door, and delivered it to the street rather than to him. “She backed that girl in front of seven people and she served you in front of the same seven. Both. Nobody in this village has thought about what that costs her yet, because they’re all still busy thinking about you. They’ll get to it by Sunday.”

The door shut.

He stood there a moment longer in the hard clean light. Then he crossed to the rain butt at the corner of the building, rinsed the plate and the cup in the cold water off the roof, dried them on the inside of his coat, and set them on the tea-house sill where the girl would see them when she came to do the window — the plate squared to the edge of the sill, the cup upside down upon it, so that nobody coming past could mistake them for a thing left lying.
