What the Fighters Won't Say

Kit let me film him from behind now, his hands wrapping a fighter’s knuckles, the line of his shoulders against the work lights — a door that had opened somewhere after the office, and neither of us had bothered shutting it back to exactly where it had been. He still watched me for the first ten minutes of any shoot the way you’d watch a dog that had bitten once and might again. But something had eased.

The Monday before, waiting out a delivery delay with two mugs of tea Frankie had made without being asked, Kit had told me, apropos of nothing, that he took his tea black.

“Sugar was a luxury for exactly the wrong years of my life,” he said, when I raised an eyebrow at it. “Never got the taste back once things changed. Feels wasteful now, sweetening something that doesn’t need it.”

“That’s either very sad or very practical and I can’t decide which.”

“Both, usually. Most things are.” He’d looked almost amused by my scepticism, an expression I’d started keeping a private inventory of, the way you’d note a rare bird. “My mother taught me to read a room before my father ever did. He wasn’t around long enough to teach anyone anything. She could walk into a room and tell you who was lying inside four seconds. I got that from her, for whatever it’s worth in a line of work she’d have hated.”

“I think she’d have understood the reading-a-room part. Might have had opinions about the rest.”

“She’d have had a great deal to say about the rest.” He’d looked out at the arch then, at the fighters warming up, at Frankie counting something into a ledger with his tongue between his teeth the way he did when the numbers weren’t quite adding up. “This whole place smells better in winter, if you want to know. Cold kills half of what’s wrong with it.”

“I’ll take your word for it. I think it smells like the inside of a boot in every season.”

“That’s because you’ve never had to be grateful for a roof.” He’d said it without malice, an observation rather than a rebuke. Something in the way he said it had made me want, briefly and uselessly, to know every single year of his life I hadn’t been there to see.

It was the fifth week, a Tuesday, unseasonably warm for October, the kind of evening where the arch under the railway at Verney Street held the day’s heat in its brick the way it never quite managed to hold out the cold. We were at Arch Nine that night rather than the Longshore, a rotation Frankie had explained to me once as a matter of not letting anyone get too comfortable knowing exactly where to find them on a given week.

I was filming a warm-up drill, two younger fighters trading light combinations while Malik called instructions from the sideline in the low, unhurried voice I’d started to associate with something almost like church, which was, I gathered, exactly the joke behind his nickname. He never raised it, not even when a fighter dropped his guard badly enough to earn a real correction, and somehow that made the correction land harder than shouting would have. I had the shotgun mic up, catching ambient sound the way I always did, half-listening the way you learn to when you’ve spent enough years recording rooms full of people who don’t think you’re really listening at all.

That was how I caught it. Not because I was trying to. Because the mic was already there.

Two of the older fighters, Dax and a heavyset man called Ottoline who fought under the name Otto and never explained the discrepancy, were standing near the equipment table, voices dropped low the way voices drop when a subject has weight to it.

“—not doing it again, not after last time,” Otto was saying. “You can tell Frankie whatever you want, I’m not taking a fight that close to a Reeves date.”

Dax said something I didn’t catch, quieter still, and Otto’s answer came back sharp enough that a few words carried clean through the drill noise.

“I don’t care what Kit promised him. Reeves doesn’t care what Kit promises anybody. You weren’t here the last time he came through the door himself, you’d have kept your voice down too.”

I don’t know exactly what my face did in that moment, but I stopped adjusting the mic angle, stopped doing anything that might have looked like the ordinary business of filming, and simply listened. The camera stayed rolling, still pointed at the drill, catching nothing useful and everything I needed.

Dax noticed me first. He said something low to Otto, a warning I understood from the shape of his mouth rather than the sound, and Otto’s whole body changed the way a held breath changes when the room it’s in goes suddenly, dangerously quiet. He looked at me across fifteen feet of concrete with an expression I hadn’t seen on any face in that building before, not fear of Kit, not the reflexive deference I’d catalogued for weeks. Something colder, that had a name and knew exactly how much that name was worth if it reached the wrong ears.

“Turn that off,” Otto said, and started walking toward me, not fast, but with the specific, deliberate weight of a man who intended to reach me before I could decide anything for myself.

I turned it off. I want to say I did it out of the same instinct that had kept me obedient the first night. Honestly, mostly, I did it because the look on his face frightened me in a way nothing in five weeks at that arch had managed to.

“I didn’t hear anything,” I said, which was a lie so immediate and so obviously useless that I regretted it before I’d finished the sentence.

“You had a microphone pointed at us for the last two minutes.”

“It was pointed at the drill.”

“Don’t.” Otto’s voice had dropped again, and this close I could see his hands were shaking very slightly, not with anger, or not only with anger. “Don’t do that thing where you make me feel stupid for being careful. I’ve been careful for three years and I’m still here, which is more than some people can say.”

Kit arrived before I could answer, moving across the arch with a speed I hadn’t seen him use before, not running, but close to it. The kind of urgency that told me he’d caught the shift in the room’s temperature from twenty feet away, the way animals catch weather.

“What happened,” he said, to both of us, to neither of us, his eyes already moving between my camera and Otto’s face.

“Nothing happened,” Otto said. “I was being careful. That’s all that happened.”

“Marlowe.” Kit’s voice, when he turned it on me, had none of the warmth the last two weeks had built between us. It was flat and fast and entirely focused. “What did you hear.”

“A name,” I said, because I’d already decided, standing there with the dead camera in my hand, that I wasn’t going to lie to him about this, whatever the cost. “Someone called Reeves. Otto said he doesn’t care what you promise people. He said the last time Reeves came through the door himself, everyone learned to keep their voice down.”

The whole arch had gone quiet around us without my noticing exactly when. The drill stopped, Malik’s low instructions cut off mid-sentence, every fighter in the building suddenly finding something urgent to do with their hands that didn’t involve looking at any of us directly. It was the kind of quiet I’d heard once before, the obedient hush after Sana called a stoppage, except there was no injury here that I could see.

Kit didn’t move for a long moment. When he spoke again his voice had gone somewhere I hadn’t heard it go even in his office with the gloves in his hands, somewhere past anger, past fear.

“You need to erase that card,” he said. “Now. Not delete it. Erase it, format it, however you know how to make sure there’s nothing left that a computer could ever pull back out of it. And you need to do it in front of me so I know it’s done.”

“Kit, I haven’t even asked—“

“You don’t get to ask. Not about this.” His hands closed at his sides, not lifting, not reaching for me or the camera, just closing, the way a man’s hands close when there is nowhere safe to put whatever is moving through him. “I need you to understand something, and I need you to understand it in the next ten seconds, because I am not going to have this conversation twice. There is a version of tonight where you walk out of this building with that name on a memory card, and there is a version where every single person standing in this room right now is safer than they were an hour ago. Those two versions cannot both exist. Do you understand me.”

“I understand you’re frightened,” I said, quietly, because it was true, and because it was the only thing I had that might actually reach him. “I’m not your enemy here, Kit. I never have been. But you’re going to have to tell me who Reeves is, because I am not going to keep working in the dark about a name that just made an entire room stop breathing.”

Frankie had crossed the arch by then, quiet as ever, and he put a hand briefly on Kit’s shoulder the way I’d seen Malik do it weeks earlier, a wordless question. Kit answered it with something equally wordless, a small shake of the head, and Frankie stepped back but didn’t leave, positioning himself at an angle that put him between the rest of the room and whatever was about to happen next.

“Everyone not directly involved in this conversation can find something to do with their hands,” Kit said, raising his voice for the first time all night, and the fighters scattered obediently to corners of the arch, pretending at drills and equipment checks with the unconvincing busyness of people who very much wanted to keep listening. Otto didn’t move. He stood exactly where he was, jaw set, watching Kit with an expression that had stopped being fear and become something closer to bracing for a verdict.

“You’re not in trouble,” Kit told him, without looking away from me. “You did exactly what you should have done. Go home, Otto. I’ll sort tonight’s card myself.”

Otto left without another word, and the sound of the roller door going up and down again behind him felt louder than it should have, final in a way that made my chest tighten before I understood why. Malik caught my eye once, across the emptying arch, and there was something in his face I couldn’t read, closer to the particular sadness of a man watching a wound he’d hoped wouldn’t get reopened get reopened anyway.

Kit looked at me for a long, terrible moment, the arch’s brick glowing faintly orange with the last of the streetlight leaking in under the railway line, forty men now reduced to a scattered handful pretending not to watch. Somewhere above us a train went over the arch, the whole structure shaking faintly with it, dust sifting down through the work lights like the building itself had an opinion about what was about to be said. Kit opened his mouth once, closed it again, and for the length of that hesitation I understood, more clearly than anything he’d told me in five weeks, exactly how much this was about to cost him.

He didn’t tell me that night. I want to be clear about that, because it would be easy to make the rest of this sound like he handed the whole story over the moment the train had passed and the arch had gone quiet again, and he didn’t. He erased the card himself, standing close enough that I could watch his hands do it, careful and thorough in a way that told me he’d done this exact task before and hated it every time. Then he told me to go home, and when I asked again, one more time, quietly, who Reeves was, he said, “Not tonight,” in a voice that had nothing left in it to argue with.

I went home.
