The Bridge

Ezra took his half-step at the bridge, the way he had every night for three years, and I looked at him.

I had never done that on purpose. Bel’s lighting plot has two marks taped on the deck for “Lamplight”, four feet apart, one amber special on each, everything else in the building out. We have stood at three and a half feet since the first night we played it, and Bel stopped re-taping the marks in the second week, and in all that time I have sung the bridge to a point just past his left ear. It is a good point. It has never once looked back.

He was already looking. That’s in the plot too, in a way: he faces me, I face the ear, eleven thousand people face the pair of us and hold their phones up, and from the back of the room the whole thing reads as two people who can’t say it. Which sells. Which pays eleven wages. Which we have never discussed, not once, in three years of being asked about it by every interviewer with a microphone and a Tuesday.

Ask me when the lamps are down, I sang, and looked at him, and kept looking.

He didn’t miss the chord. I want that on the record, because I’d have missed it. He came in under me on the second line the way he always does, a third below and a fraction late, so that it sounds like he’s agreeing with something I haven’t finished saying, and his face did a thing I have no word for, and I write the words.

And I’ll say it like a vow.

Then the room took the last line off us, because that’s whose it is. Eleven thousand, sold out, Newcastle, night fifty-eight of seventy-one: but I’d never say it in the light, and every phone in the building pointed at the two of us not saying it.

I counted. I always count during the last line, because it’s the only part of the show I don’t have to sing, and because counting is what I do instead of the thing I’m not doing. Phones: I gave up at the third block and called it four thousand. Hands on shoulders: the couples, marking each other, the way they do at that line. Fire exits: six, lit green, all where they’d been at soundcheck. Ezra: one, half a foot closer than the plot allows, not looking away either.

Then the last chorus came round and I had to sing it, so I did, at the ear, like a professional. But he knew. You can’t unring a bell in front of eleven thousand people, and you can’t unlook at a man who has been waiting three years to be looked at, and I had known that before I did it, which is the part I would have to answer for.

We don’t do encores. Hal’s rule, from the folk clubs: leave while they still want you, and never make a room beg. So “Lamplight” is the last thing, and after the last chord there is a blackout, and in the blackout there are three seconds between the stage and the corridor.

I know it’s three because I’ve counted it fifty-seven times. Fitz’s torch comes on at three. Before it does, the deck is black, the room is a roar with no shape, and the five of us walk on memory toward a gap in the upstage blacks that is wider than it looks.

Night fifty-eight, I didn’t walk.

He was where the plot puts him, three and a half feet to my left, which in the dark is one step. I took it. I said his name first, so that he’d have time to take a step of his own, in whichever direction he liked.

“Ezra.”

“Here,” he said.

I kissed him. I want to be exact about it, because I have been inexact about him for seven years and it has been a full-time job. I put my hand on the strap of his guitar, where it crosses his chest, and I kissed him, and it lasted about as long as the last line of the bridge, and he kissed me back for the whole of it. One of his hands found the back of my neck and stayed there and did not push, in any direction. Three seconds. Then Fitz’s torch came on in the wings, and swung, and found the floor between us, and we were a yard apart and walking.

“Stage left, please, all of you, mind the cable,” Fitz said, the way she says it every night, and it may be the only time in my life I have been grateful to be told to mind a cable.

The corridor at the Newcastle arena is long and painted the yellow of a hospital I’d rather not name, and it is fifty-one steps from the wings to the door with our name on it. I have never done them faster. I have also never done them with less idea of what I’d do at the end.

Lenny was already talking. Lenny is twenty-seven and plays the drums and has, since roughly the first leg, lived in a permanent state of just having finished a show, whether or not one has taken place. “Did you hear the last line? Did you hear it? That was the loudest one. That was louder than Leeds.”

“It was loud,” said Femi, who says things once.

“I’m saying it was the loudest.”

“Everyone heard you say it.”

Dot came past me and said nothing at all, which for Dot is a paragraph. She looked at me. Then she looked at the fiddle case in her hand as if it had asked her something, and she went in ahead of us.

The living room, which is what Hal has called every dressing room we’ve had since the folk clubs, had the usual on the table: hummus nobody had ordered, twelve beers, a bottle of the whisky Hal puts on the rider because he believes a band should be offered something it doesn’t drink. I had water. I always have water after the last song when there’s a show the next night, because my voice is the thing that pays eleven people, and because if I’m going to be stupid I’d rather be stupid sober and know it was me.

Ezra came in last. He put the red guitar on its stand and looked at the room, at Lenny, Femi, Dot, the hummus, and not at me, and said, “Good room,” to nobody, and sat down with a beer he didn’t open, and I understood that he was going to let me go first.

He has always let me go first. It’s his worst quality. I wouldn’t change it.

Lenny wanted the bar. Lenny always wants the bar; the bar is the second show, the one where he’s the singer. Femi wanted his phone, because it was ten to eleven and his daughter is six and in Cardiff and goes to sleep at half seven, and he wanted to look at a photo of her doing it. Dot wanted, as far as I could tell, to sit on the arm of the sofa with her fiddle across her knees and watch me not look at Ezra, which she did for eleven minutes, with the expression of a woman checking a tuning she already knows is off.

“Good room,” Dot said, at the end of the eleven minutes, and it was not the same sentence he’d said.

Bus call was half twelve, in the loading bay, under sodium light, in the drizzle Newcastle keeps on a timer. Fitz stood at the door of the bus with a clipboard she doesn’t need and counted us on.

“Dot. Femi. Sylvie. Ezra. Marek. Bel. Jonesy. Keith’s on. That’s seven and a driver.” Fitz is forty-four and has been counting bands onto buses for twenty of those years. “Where’s Lenny.”

“Bar,” said Femi.

“Then it’s seven, and I’ll count him when he’s a fact.”

Lenny was a fact at twenty to one, with two cans under his jacket, and she counted him, and the door hissed, and we were eight and a driver and doing sixty toward Glasgow with the lights off.

The bus has twelve bunks, three high, six a side, a curtain on each, and a strip of blue light along the floor under the bottom row so you can find your way back from the toilet without waking anybody. There’s a heavier curtain at the front between us and Keith’s radio, which he keeps on a phone-in all night at a volume that suggests he is the only man in the country who agrees with anyone on it.

My bunk is bottom left, third from the front. Ezra’s is bottom right, third from the front. That isn’t a plot. That’s where we put our bags the first night of the first tour, and nobody has moved since, because a bus is a house and you don’t swap bedrooms in a house.

I lay in mine with the curtain half open and the blue light on the floor. Lenny opened a can at the back. Dot, above me, turned a page. Femi, at the front, said goodnight to a photograph. I did not sleep, and after twenty minutes the curtain across the aisle opened four inches, and it was dark in there, and he said, “Sylvie.”

Quiet. The bus does sixty and at floor level it’s loud enough to talk across the aisle and not be heard above it. We learned that on the first tour too.

“Here,” I said, which was his, and I heard him breathe out through his nose, which is what Ezra does instead of laughing when he’s decided a joke is on him.

“Right, then.”

“Right.”

We lay there. The blue light lay there.

“I’ve been not looking at you for seven years,” he said. “Since the Feathers. In case you were wondering how long.”

“You were twenty-four.”

“And you were twenty-two, and you lent a man you’d never met your guitar. In your tuning. Which nobody does.” A pause with the road in it. “I’m thirty-one, Sylvie. I’ve had time to be sure.”

“I’m twenty-nine. I’ve had the same time. I spent it counting.”

“Counting what?”

Phones. Wages. Exits. The seconds between the last chord and the corridor. The number of interviews in which one of us has said it’s a song and the other has said ask the song. I didn’t say any of it. When I get near a true thing my sentences get shorter, and then they stop. He knows that. He’s the one who’s been playing under the stop for three years.

“It was good,” he said, after a while. “Tonight. In case you were wondering that as well.”

“I wasn’t.”

“No. You’d counted.”

“Three seconds.”

“Three and a bit,” he said. “Fitz was slow on the torch.”

That was the joke, given to me so I’d have time. I’ve watched him do it in every argument we’ve ever had about a middle eight: the plain thing, then the joke, then the wait. He calls it patience. I’ve never told him what I call it, because I’ve never had to; he heard the tune of it years ago.

“Not a word,” I said. “Not yet.”

“Why not?”

I had eleven thousand answers in the room tonight and I couldn’t find one on the bus. I opened my mouth and what came out was the road, and Keith’s radio, and a man in Carlisle who thought the roads were a disgrace.

He let it go. I heard him let it go: a shift in the bunk, the curtain drawn back the rest of the way so I could see the shape of him, one arm behind his head, looking at the underside of Femi’s bunk as if there were a tune written on it.

“We play it again tomorrow,” he said.
