Room 412

Jonesy asked for the bridge at ten past four, both mics, and I gave it to him at the ear.

Soundcheck in Glasgow is the same as soundcheck anywhere: an empty room that holds twelve and a half thousand, work lights on, the floor a grey plain with the barrier across it, Bel up in the truss asking for the amber specials one at a time and Jonesy at the desk in the middle of the plain asking for one more of everything. We had slept in the bus in the car park until nine and in the hotel until two. Lenny had slept in a coat.

“Again,” said Jonesy, in the wedges. “Ezra, you’re under her. More of you.”

“There’s always more of me,” Ezra said, into his mic, and Femi laughed once, and Dot didn’t.

We did it again. Four feet apart, because Bel hadn’t taped the deck yet and without the marks we stand where the plot says, which tells you something about the marks. He sang his line a third under mine and a fraction late. I sang mine to the point past his ear, and the point past his ear had never been so far away, and I understood that the song was going to be a different job now, every night, thirteen more times, and that nobody had asked me whether I wanted it.

Dot was watching. Dot stands stage right with the fiddle up and her weight on her back foot, and she has a way of looking over the bridge of it that makes her look like she’s checking a level. She checked me. Then she checked him. Then she put the bow down and said, “Jonesy, the fiddle’s fizzing again, top end,” and that was the whole of Dot’s opinion until the hotel.

“Good,” said Jonesy. “That’s fine. Sylv, you’re a bit close on your mic.”

I stepped back off it. I’d been leaning in. I hadn’t noticed.

The show was the same show. That’s what nobody tells you about the thing you’ve been afraid of for three years: the room doesn’t know. Twelve and a half thousand people came in out of a wet Wednesday and put their phones up at the first chord of “Lamplight” the way they always do, and at the bridge the two amber specials came up and everything else went out, and the couples put their hands on each other’s shoulders, and the last line came back at us like weather.

I sang to the ear. I sang to it perfectly. I have been doing it for three years and I did it better than I’d ever done it, and he stood half a foot closer than the plot and looked at me the whole time, and I counted phones, and got to the third block, and stopped.

In the three seconds of dark I didn’t move and neither did he. Fitz’s torch came on and found us a yard apart and not walking, which is a different thing from a yard apart and walking, and Fitz knows the difference, because knowing where people are is her whole job.

“Stage left,” she said. “All of you. Mind the cable.”

The living room in Glasgow had a window, which is rare, and Lenny stood at it with a beer telling Femi about October.

“Six weeks. Arenas. Proper arenas, not—“ He waved the can at the room, which holds twelve and a half thousand and had been full forty minutes ago. “Bigger. It’s a session, it’s not a band, but they’ve asked, and you don’t get asked twice.”

“You’ve told us,” said Femi.

“I’m telling you again because nobody’s said anything.”

“What do you want said?”

Lenny thought about it. “Congratulations,” he said. “Or don’t go. Either.”

Femi said neither. Femi is thirty-four and plays bass and the keys and has a daughter of six in Cardiff who is coming to the Cardiff show in a fortnight to see what her father does for a living, and what Femi wants out of this tour is to go home at the end of it and be asked back for the next one, and he was not going to spend any of that on Lenny. He drank his one beer. He said, “It’s a good session, Len,” which was true and answered nothing, and Lenny took it, because at eleven at night Lenny will take anything.

Dot sat on the arm of the sofa with her fiddle across her knees. Ezra sat opposite with a beer he hadn’t opened and told Marek the red guitar’s neck had moved in the heat, and did not look at me, and I did not look at him, and the not-looking was so loud in that room that Dot got up.

“I’m going to the hotel,” she said, “before something happens in here that I’ll have to have an opinion about.”

Lenny went to the bar. Femi went up. Dot had beaten us to the hotel by half an hour and was still in the lobby with a newspaper she wasn’t reading, and she looked at me, and looked at Ezra, and got into the lift ahead of us and said, “Night, Sylv,” to the closing doors, and there was a question in it, and I let the doors close on the question.

I’d had water. I want that clear. It was the second night of two, and my voice comes first, and I had decided somewhere around the last chorus that whatever I did or didn’t do tonight I was going to do it with a clear head and no excuse to reach for in the morning.

We were on the fourth floor. Fitz books us in a block and I count the doors on the way down the corridor because I count everything: 405, 407, 409, and his key card went into 409, and mine was 412, across and one down, and he’d walked me to it because it was on his way, and now it was the end of his way and he was standing in it.

“There’s a kettle,” I said. “I’ve got the tea you like. The bags Fitz thinks are a joke.”

“Tea.”

“Tea.”

He came as far as the door frame and stopped there, with his hand on it, and I went past him into the room and filled the kettle at the bathroom tap because hotel kettles are always dry, and I had my back to him and I put it on its stand and pressed the switch, and it started to tick.

“I’ll come in for tea,” he said, behind me. “I’ll come in for the other thing if you say it. I’m not going to guess, Sylvie. Not with you.”

And then he waited. He does that. He asks and then he waits the whole length of the answer, however long, and it’s the most unfair thing about him, because it means the silence is always mine.

The kettle ticked. I stood with my hand on the counter and thought about the Feathers.

· · ·Scene break

Seven years ago the Feathers in Leeds had an upstairs room with a Tuesday open-mic, fifteen minutes a name, and a kitchen downstairs where the landlord let the players sit after last orders because it was warmer than the bar. I was twenty-two and had been writing in the back of a bookshop in Keighley for four years, and I had a song with a chorus in it that I’d hidden under a joke, so that if the room laughed I could say I’d meant it to.

He was on before me. He was twenty-four and from Falmouth and had a guitar that had been to more gigs than he had, and on the second song of his fifteen minutes the top string went, with the sound a string makes when it’s been meaning to for a month. He looked at it. The room looked at him.

I handed him mine. I don’t know why. I’d never done it before and I’ve never done it since; it was a plywood-top from a shop in Bradford, the one I still play, the one that’s been on an album cover and in a hundred thousand phones, and it was in my tuning, which is standard with two strings lied to, and I gave it to a man I’d never met and sat down.

He found the tuning in four bars. He didn’t ask what it was. He played the rest of his set on it, twelve minutes, and gave it back with a nod, and I did my fifteen and went to the kitchen.

He was in the kitchen. He’d put a new string on his own guitar, and he waited until I’d got a cup of tea I hadn’t asked for, and then he said, “Play me the chorus again. The one you hid.”

I played it.

Under it, he played the chord I’d been avoiding.

I want to be exact. It wasn’t a clever chord. It was the plain one, the one that sits right under the line and says the thing the line is walking round. I’d written the whole song the long way about it. I’d written the field the long way round, so I’d never have to cross it, and this man from Falmouth I’d known for forty minutes had walked across it in four bars and looked up to see if I minded.

We wrote “Long Field” in that kitchen, before three in the morning, a verse each. It’s never been recorded. I went back to Keighley. He rang about a gig two weeks later and said the tune was a place he kept going back to, and I said which tune, and he said, “The one you hid,” and I said yes to the gig.

That’s the whole of it. Nothing happened. Nothing happened for seven years, through a van and a duo and a label and two records and a band, until night fifty-eight, and the reason nothing happened is that he is the only person alive who can hear what I leave out, and if he was in the room I would have to say it.

That was the decision, and the kettle clicked off, and I’d made it.

· · ·Scene break

I turned round. He was where I’d left him, in the door frame, with his hand on it. He hadn’t moved an inch in and he hadn’t moved an inch out, which is where Ezra lives.

“Go to your room, Ezra.”

He didn’t move.

“I want you to stay,” I said. “I’m asking you to go. Both of those are true. I can only say the second one once tonight, so I’m saying it now, while I can.”

He looked at me for the length of a whole answer. Then he took his hand off the frame.

“Right,” he said.

“Right.”

“Say the first one again some time.” He’d gone one step back into the corridor, and he laughed at himself, a short one, through the nose. “When it’s not the second one as well. I’d like to hear how it sounds on its own.”

“Goodnight.”

“Goodnight, Sylvie.”

I closed the door. I stood with my hand flat on it and listened to him go three doors down, and heard 409 open and shut, and made a cup of the tea he likes and didn’t drink it. I want it on the record that I was sober, and that I had the sentence, and that I said it. It’s the only thing I said all day that I’d have written down.

Hal texted at seven the next morning, which is Hal’s idea of not waking anyone.

Annika’s coming to Manchester Friday. Soundcheck, not the show. Be nice, both of you. H.

I read it four times. Annika Strand is Ninebark’s head of artist marketing and does not come to soundchecks. She comes to signings, and to launches, and to the one meeting a year where the money is, and she has been saying “the moment” about the bridge of “Lamplight” since the first clip of it did a million, and I have been not answering her for as long as I’ve been not answering anybody.

Friday was two days. Two days was not enough for anything, and I lay in 412 with the tea gone cold and counted them anyway.
