First Look

Ruben caught her at the coffee machine on Thursday morning with the specific brightness he used when he wanted something. “Marijke says you’re back at the gallery today.”

“Sampling. Not a conversation for a hallway.”

“I just think, going forward, if you loop me in before the visits and not after, I can actually do the client side properly instead of improvising it.” He said improvising like it cost him something, a man auditioning for a sympathy he hadn’t earned. “You know how you get, Jo. Too much detail, not enough headline.”

“I’ll send you a headline once I have one that isn’t a guess wearing a suit.” She took her coffee and left him there, because eleven years had taught her exactly how far a sentence like that was allowed to travel before it cost her something, and that one had already gone as far as she could afford.

Marijke caught her by the lift, coat already half on, in the specific hurry of a woman who had somewhere to be and no intention of letting the corridor find out where. “You’re taking samples today.”

“Three cross-sections. Client’s consented in writing.”

“Good.” Marijke paused, key card halfway to the reader, and looked at Jo with something that wasn’t quite suspicion and wasn’t quite approval either. “Anselm Grey called my direct line yesterday to confirm the appointment himself. Owners don’t usually do that. Usually it’s an assistant, or nobody, and we turn up and hope somebody remembers to let us in.” She let the door close without going through it. “Is there anything about this client I should know before Friday’s write-up?”

“He reads condition reports for pleasure and corrects the ones that hedge.” Jo said it flatly, and it wasn’t a lie, and it also wasn’t the whole of what Marijke had actually been asking. “That’s the whole of it.”

“Mm,” Marijke said, in the tone of a woman filing something away for later rather than believing it outright, and went through the door before Jo had to decide whether to say anything further.

The gallery was quieter at ten than it had been on Monday, the front room empty, the discreet plaque catching a thin, flat winter light that made everything on the Prinsengracht look freshly washed and slightly cold. Anselm met her at the door with two coffees already made, which she hadn’t asked for and didn’t mention, because mentioning it would have made it a thing, and it plainly wasn’t meant as one.

“North room again,” he said. “I moved the good lamp in as well, in case you needed it lower.”

“You didn’t need to do that.”

“You said the light mattered more to me than it mattered to you. I’m testing the theory.”

She laid her case out on the trestle he’d had brought in — scalpel, resin mounts, glass slides, the small brutal tools of taking something four hundred years old apart one grain at a time — and explained, because his consent had to be specific and his consent had to be recorded, exactly what she intended to remove and from where: three cross-sections no larger than a pinhead, one from the edge of the disputed highlight, two from areas of established craquelure for comparison, all from points the frame would eventually cover.

“You’re not taking it from the highlight itself.”

“From the edge of it. I want the layer underneath, not the layer I’m already suspicious of.” She didn’t look up from the mount she was labelling. “Most people ask if it’ll show. Nobody asks where from and why.”

“Most people don’t understand there’s a difference between a sample that answers a question and a sample that just proves you were thorough.” He’d pulled a stool up rather than stand over her, which she noticed and didn’t say anything about either, because most clients who watched, watched the painting, waiting for it to confirm what they already believed about it, and Anselm was watching her hands instead, the way you’d watch someone work a lock you genuinely didn’t know the mechanism of. “You take the cross-section at an angle. Why not straight down?”

Jo stopped, scalpel half-lifted, and looked at him properly for the first time that morning. “Because straight down gives you a clean plug and destroys the stratigraphy at the edges — you lose the boundary between layers, which is the only part that actually tells you anything. Angled, you get the full sequence in one slice, ground to varnish, readable under magnification like a core sample.” She went back to work. “That’s not a question most owners think to ask.”

“What do most owners ask?”

“Whether it’ll devalue the piece if the answer’s bad. Whether I can be quicker about it. Once, whether I’d consider not mentioning a particular finding to the underwriter, phrased as a joke, in a way that made it very clear it wasn’t one.” She drew the first sample free, no bigger than a full stop, and dropped it into its resin mount with the flat competence of a woman who had done this several thousand times. “You haven’t asked any of those.”

“Should I have?”

“No. I’m just telling you it’s unusual.” She sealed the mount and labelled it, block capitals, the sample number, the date, the exact coordinates measured from the panel’s lower edge. “Most people want the painting to already be what they’ve told everyone it is. You keep asking questions that only make sense if you actually want to know the answer, whatever it turns out to be.”

“I’m not most owners. I spent four years cataloguing beside someone who read cross-sections for a living.” He said it plainly, without the careful weight he’d put around anything to do with the empty chair on Monday, and Jo filed the sentence away exactly where she filed everything before she knew what it was worth. “She used to say the boundary was the only honest part of a painting. Everything above it was intention. The boundary was just what happened.”

“Your wife.”

“Annelies.” He didn’t flinch at the name, which she noted the way she noted everything, a fact rather than a feeling yet. “She catalogued for the gallery for eighteen years. You’ll have seen her hand on half the labels in the corridor, if you looked closely enough to notice initials nobody else looks twice at.”

“I noticed.”

“I thought you might.”

Something in the way he said it — not flattering, just accurate — sat in Jo’s chest longer than a compliment from anyone else would have, and she was still deciding what to do with that when the door at the end of the corridor opened without a knock and a young woman came in shaking rain off a coat that had clearly walked from the tram rather than been driven.

“Papa, you didn’t say you had someone—“ She stopped in the doorway, taking in the trestle, the scalpel, the labelled slides, Jo’s gloved hands, with the fast, assessing look of someone trained to read a room for what was actually wrong in it. “Sorry. I didn’t realise it was a working visit.”

“Sanne. This is Johanna Achterberg, from the insurer. Jo, my daughter.”

“You’re the one doing the reauthorisation.” Sanne said it flatly, not quite a question, already moving to stand nearer the painting than to either of them, positioning herself, Jo thought, the way you positioned yourself near someone you were quietly deciding whether to trust. “Papa said it was paperwork.”

“It’s mostly paperwork,” Jo said, which was true in the way that a house fire was mostly smoke.

“Mostly.” Sanne looked at the trestle again, at the three small glass mounts each holding a fragment smaller than a grain of rice, and something moved behind her eyes that she visibly decided not to say out loud in front of her father. “You’re taking pieces of it.”

“Micro-samples. Invisible once mounted, and your father’s consented to exactly where and how much.”

“I know how a sample works. I’m a doctor.” Sanne said it without apology, the specific bluntness of someone who had learned young that softness got talked over in her family and had simply stopped offering it. “I just didn’t know Mama’s painting needed a biopsy.”

“You’re allowed to say what you actually think,” Jo said, before Anselm could answer for her, because she’d noticed, in the ninety seconds since Sanne had walked in, that everyone in the room seemed to be managing everyone else’s feelings except their own. “I’d rather know if you object than have you decide not to say so in front of me.”

Sanne looked at her properly for the first time, something recalibrating behind her eyes. “I don’t object. I’m allowed to find it strange without objecting to it. Those are different things, whatever you two have decided about each other in the last however long you’ve been standing in this room together.”

“Sanne.” Anselm’s voice didn’t rise, but something in it closed a door somewhere. “It’s routine.”

“That’s the word you used about the last three things that weren’t.” Sanne pulled her coat tighter, already halfway to leaving again. “I’ll come back properly next week, once nobody’s cutting bits off Mama’s painting. I only stopped by to drop off the OLVG rota so you’d stop asking when my next weekend off is.” She left the rota on the corner of the trestle, carefully clear of the equipment, and was gone before either of them found anything to say that would have helped.

The room held her absence for a moment the way a room does after someone has said something true and inconvenient in it.

“She’s not wrong to be careful,” Anselm said finally, to the painting rather than to Jo. “She’s spent three years watching people ask questions about her mother’s work and getting used to the fact that not all of them mean well by it.”

“I’m not asking to hurt anyone.”

“I know that.” He said it simply, without needing to be convinced of it, which was more unsettling than if he’d doubted her outright. “It’s just been true before, is the trouble. It’ll take her longer than it took me.”

“What was it? The last three things that weren’t routine.”

He was quiet long enough that she thought he might not answer. “A journalist, two years ago, who wanted to write about Annelies’s illness as part of a piece about the gallery’s finances and called it human interest. A dealer who offered to buy three pieces at once, cheaply, the month after the funeral, and implied he was doing me a kindness. And a solicitor’s letter, eight months ago, about a discrepancy in the estate that turned out to be nothing, but took six weeks to prove was nothing.” He said it without self-pity, cataloguing it the way she catalogued paint layers, one fact after another with no editorial attached. “Sanne answered two of those calls herself, because I wasn’t picking up the phone that year. She’s not wrong to assume the worst walks in first and asks questions later.”

“I’m not the worst.”

“I know that too. It doesn’t mean she has to know it yet.” He said it without asking her to fix it, which she noticed, because most people, told a version of that, would have wanted reassurance rather than simply having stated a fact and let it sit there.

Jo finished labelling the third mount and sealed the case, aware of the mineral note again, faint under the beeswax, exactly where it had been on Monday — fresher, if anything, than a room this still and this cold had any right to smell. She didn’t mention it. She had three data points now instead of one, which in her experience was the difference between a suspicion and the beginning of a pattern, and she had learned a long time ago not to say either kind out loud until she’d stopped being the only person who could see it.

“I’ll have preliminary results by the end of next week,” she said, at the door. “I’d rather tell you myself than have you hear it filtered through a summary.”

“I’d rather that too.” He held the door for her, close enough that she caught, under the beeswax and the fresh paint that shouldn’t have been there, the ordinary smell of someone else’s coffee, and thought, with a precision she immediately distrusted, that she had spent an entire morning being watched by a man who had asked her exactly one real question and meant every word of it.
