The Pigment Problem

Her sister called on Sundays, the way she had every Sunday for six years, a habit that had started as something practical after their mother’s funeral and had since become the only fixed point in either of their weeks. Femke lived in Utrecht with a husband, two children and a kitchen that was never once, in six years of video calls, fully tidy, and she asked, as she always did, whether Jo was seeing anyone, eating properly, sleeping enough, in that order, and Jo gave her the same three answers she always gave, none of them quite lies.

“You sound different,” Femke said, halfway through a story about her youngest’s school play, stopping herself mid-sentence the way only a sister could. “Not bad different. Just — awake. Are you sleeping?”

“I’m working a good case.” It was the truest thing Jo had said all week, and also, she recognised even as she said it, a careful evasion of the actual question, the same evasion she’d perfected at fourteen and never once retired. “A real one. Client actually wants to know what I find instead of what it’s worth.”

“That’s new.”

“It is.” She didn’t say anything else, because there wasn’t a version of the rest of it — a gallery owner’s careful hands, a corridor of certificates with a dead woman’s initials on half of them, the specific way silence sat differently in a room when somebody was actually listening in it — that she could say to her sister without it becoming a much longer conversation than she had the nerve for on a Sunday evening, mid-week case still unverified. Femke didn’t push. She never did, which was its own kind of trust, the sort Jo had spent her whole career failing to extend to anyone at her own firm.

She hadn’t slept, not properly, and had given up trying by four, cycling in the dark along a towpath with no other traffic on it besides one barge crew loading crates under a work light, breath fogging ahead of her the whole way to the Zuidas. The lab at Coster & Vries was empty at half past five in the morning, which was the only reason Jo used it at half past five in the morning. She’d signed the samples out the evening before, mounted them herself rather than hand them to the lab technician who came in at eight and left at four and had, on more than one occasion, mounted a cross-section at the wrong angle and called it close enough. Close enough was not a phrase Jo had any use for before she’d verified something twice.

The polarising microscope hummed the way it always hummed, a sound she found more restful than most silence. She set the first mount — the edge of the disputed highlight — under the lens, brought it into focus, and rotated the stage slowly, watching the way the pigment particles caught and lost the light as the polarising filters turned against each other.

Natural ultramarine, ground from lapis lazuli the way every seventeenth-century Dutch painter with a wealthy client had ground it, showed under polarised light as a scatter of irregular grains, uneven in size, carrying the faint impurities of the stone it came from — flecks of pyrite, threads of calcite, the visible signature of a mineral that had never once been asked to be uniform. She had seen it a hundred times. She knew what it looked like the way she knew her own signature.

What sat under the lens instead was smaller, rounder, and identical to itself in a way no ground stone had ever managed to be — particle after particle the same size as the one before it, the unmistakable fingerprint of something manufactured rather than mined. French ultramarine. Synthesised for the first time in the 1820s, a full century and a half after Aldert van Cleef had, according to every document in the Grey Gallery’s provenance file, finished painting a girl at a window and died leaving the paint to age honestly for the next three hundred years.

She sat back from the eyepiece and didn’t say anything, because there was no one there to say it to, and because seven years ago she had learned exactly what happened to a certainty spoken out loud one lab result too early.

She photographed the mount under three magnifications before she let herself feel anything at all about what she was looking at, logged the sample number, the date, the exact field of view, the filter settings, in the flat administrative language a report could survive being read back against in a courtroom if it ever came to that. Then she carried the same mount across to the Raman unit in the corner — the one piece of equipment in the building nobody but her and one bored technician ever switched on — and waited the eleven minutes it took to warm, because a particle count under polarised light was a strong indicator and not, on its own, a fact she’d put her name beneath. The spectrum that came back, when it finally did, showed the characteristic peaks of a synthetic lazurite analogue and nothing else: no trace of the sulphur isotope ratios natural stone carried, no impurity signature at all. Two instruments, two different physical principles, the same impossible answer.

Only then did she let herself think the sentence properly, once, all the way through: a painting that could not have been finished later than 1665 carried, in one small highlight on the girl’s own hand, a pigment that would not exist for another hundred and sixty years.

She ran the second cross-section — one of the comparison samples, from an area of established, undisputed craquelure — purely to make herself doubt the first result properly rather than out of any real hope it would contradict it. It didn’t. Natural ultramarine, irregular, impure, exactly as old as everything around it. The painting was genuine. The highlight on the girl’s knuckle was not. She ran both mounts a third time before six, because a fact that mattered this much deserved to survive being disbelieved by the person who’d found it, and by the time the sky over the Zuidas had gone from black to the flat grey that passed for dawn in January, she had run it enough times that the only thing left to verify was whether she had the nerve to say so.

She thought, briefly and only once, of Willem — seven years retired now, a shipping insurer’s forged bill of lading, a signature’s ink sitting proud of a varnish layer that shouldn’t have cured for another century, a finding she had handed him three weeks before a meeting because he’d asked to see her notes and she hadn’t yet learned that asked to see and intended to keep were different sentences. He had presented it as his own. She had sat two seats down and said nothing, because being disbelieved had always frightened her considerably more than being erased, and it had taken her seven years to notice that the second fear had simply replaced the first one without ever actually leaving.

She didn’t think about it again. She’d found that the only reliable way to survive a memory like that was to give it exactly one paragraph and then get up and make coffee, which was what she did.

· · ·Scene break

Ruben was waiting by her desk when she came in properly at nine, coat still on, the particular restlessness of a man who had already decided what he needed from a conversation before he’d had it.

“Marijke wants a client update by Friday. Anselm Grey’s asking, apparently, and a client who asks is a client who’s nervous, and a nervous client is the worst kind to leave hanging.” He perched on the edge of her desk, which she hated and had never once successfully stopped him doing. “So. What’s the headline?”

“There isn’t one yet.”

“There’s always a headline, Jo, that’s what a headline is — the thing you’d say if someone gave you one sentence.” He said it kindly, the specific kindness of a man entirely convinced he was doing her a favour. “You’ve had the samples four days. Give me the shape of it and I’ll handle the wording for the file. You know how you get.”

“I know how I get.” She didn’t look up from the mount log she was writing, because if she looked at him she was going to say something she couldn’t take back before Friday. “The shape of it is that I found something in one cross-section that I’m going to verify a fourth time before I put a single word of it in front of a client, because the last time I said a true thing out loud before I was completely certain of it, somebody else’s name ended up on the finding.”

Ruben blinked, the closest he came to hearing anything. “That was years ago.”

“Seven.”

“You’ve never mentioned it.”

“I’m mentioning it now, once, and then I’m not going to again.” She set the pen down. “Tell Marijke she’ll have a written preliminary by end of week. Tell her it’s mine, and it’s not a headline, it’s a finding, and there’s a difference, and if the difference doesn’t survive translation into the client meeting then the meeting’s the problem, not the finding.”

“Nobody’s trying to take your finding, Jo. I just tidy up the language for the client. You know how you get — too much detail, not enough headline, and then Marijke’s the one fielding a confused call from a nervous gallery owner because your report read like an appeal to a scientific journal.”

“There’s a difference between tidying language and standing in front of a room saying we’re seeing about something I found alone, at half past five, before anyone else in this building was awake.” She hadn’t meant to say that part out loud, and having said it, didn’t take it back. “I’m not precious about the wording, Ruben. I’m precious about whose name is attached to the work when it turns out to matter.”

“It’s a pigment in a paint sample. It’s not going to matter that much.”

“That’s exactly the kind of sentence I’d want written down somewhere, so that whoever’s wrong about it later can be shown the receipt.”

He left, eventually, with the vaguely wounded look of a man who had asked a reasonable question and received an answer with teeth in it, and Jo sat at her desk a long time afterward with the fourth cross-section’s confirmation open in front of her, the pigment sitting there under the microscope’s photograph exactly as impossible as it had been at six that morning.

Marijke’s calendar invite arrived at half eleven: Grey — preliminary findings — Monday 10.00, Meeting Room 3. Client attending, it said, which meant Anselm, which meant that for the first time since Rotterdam she would be saying a true, unverified-past-doubt-by-anyone-but-her thing out loud in a room that contained both the person who could take it from her and the person who had, so far, never once given her a reason to expect that.

She thought about what it would cost her to walk into that room and say the finding herself, plainly, before Ruben found a gentler shape for it. She thought about Willem’s face in the meeting seven years ago, unbothered, entirely at ease with a discovery that had cost her three weeks and hadn’t cost him anything at all, and about how long it had taken her afterward to understand that her silence in that room had been a choice and not simply something that had happened to her.

She didn’t know yet whether she had it in her to choose differently this time. She only knew the meeting was Monday, and that for the first time in seven years, somebody in the room was going to be watching to see whether she said it at all — and that, for reasons she wasn’t ready to examine before Monday either, she badly wanted that somebody to see her get it right.
