Credit Where It's Due

The meeting room at Coster & Vries had a view of the Zuidas that nobody in it ever looked at, least of all Ruben, who had arranged his laptop, his printed summary and his water glass with the exact symmetry of a man who had rehearsed the next fifteen minutes in front of a mirror.

Anselm arrived two minutes early, which put him alone with Jo in the room for exactly as long as it took Marijke to find the right cable for the projector, and used the time to ask, quietly, whether the preliminary held up under a third look, the way another man might have asked whether she’d slept.

“It held up under a fifth,” she said. “I stopped counting after that.”

“Good,” he said, and nothing else, and she understood, in the particular way she was starting to understand most of what he didn’t say out loud, that he’d been more worried about the finding than he’d let on over the phone, and that good had cost him something to say as plainly as he’d said it.

Ruben came in behind Marijke with the specific brightness of a man walking into a room he’d already decided belonged to him, nodded at Anselm with the warmth of someone greeting a client rather than a person, and took the seat at the head of the table nearest the screen, angling his laptop so the room would have to look past him to look at anything else.

“Bottom line,” he said, before Marijke had finished distributing the agenda, which was how every one of his summaries began and which Jo had stopped finding funny somewhere around year three. “We’ve identified a material anomaly in the panel’s paint layer. Synthetic ultramarine, present in a highlight that should be reading as period-original. It’s not conclusive on its own, but combined with what we’re seeing in the craquelure pattern, I’d call it a strong indicator of localised restoration or retouching inconsistent with the piece’s documented history.”

We’re seeing. Jo sat two chairs down the table with her own copy of the report closed in front of her, the one with her name on the header and every measurement in her own hand, and said nothing, because she had learned a long time ago exactly how far it cost her to interrupt a sentence like that before it finished.

“That’s a significant finding for a routine reauthorisation,” Marijke said, making a note. “Ruben, walk us through the methodology.”

“Cross-section analysis, comparison samples, the usual rigour.” He said rigour the way he said everything that belonged to somebody else, comfortably, as though the word had always been his to spend. “I flagged the highlight on the first site visit and had the team run it down. Two facilities confirmed the particle profile independently, which is why I’m comfortable calling this more than a preliminary read.”

“Two facilities,” Marijke repeated, glancing at the single-page summary in front of her. “The report only references one lab.”

“Internal shorthand. Polarised light and Raman, technically two separate instruments, so — two facilities, functionally.” He said it smoothly, the specific smoothness of a man used to a room accepting his arithmetic rather than checking it, and moved to click to the next slide.

Across the table, Anselm Grey set down the coffee he hadn’t touched since it arrived. He hadn’t said anything yet. He’d been quiet the way he was quiet in the north room, the kind of quiet Jo had learned by now wasn’t absence but attention, watching the whole exchange the way he’d watched her hands over the trestle — for the mechanism, not the surface.

“I’m sorry,” he said, mild, unhurried, the tone of a man asking someone to repeat a name he hadn’t quite caught. “You flagged it on the first visit?”

“That’s right.”

“I was in the room for the first visit.” Anselm turned his cup a quarter turn on its saucer, an absent, precise motion, and looked at Marijke rather than at Ruben, which Jo noticed even before she understood why it mattered. “Ms Achterberg found the discrepancy in the craquelure with a loupe and a torch, alone, in under an hour, without a comparison sample or a microscope, and then declined to say anything about it off the record until she’d verified it herself. Twice, as far as I understood it. Mr Dekker joined us for the second visit, briefly, to discuss the client-facing timeline. He did not run the cross-section, because I watched Ms Achterberg run it herself, at the trestle, in front of me.”

The room did the specific, brief kind of stillness a room does when somebody has said a plain fact in a place built to move around plain facts.

“With respect,” Ruben said, recovering first, in the tone of a man reaching for a shape he’d used successfully before, “these things are genuinely a team effort by the time they reach a client meeting. Jo does excellent bench work. I do the synthesis, the client framing, the parts that actually—“

“I don’t need the finding synthesised,” Anselm said, not unkindly, but without leaving anywhere for the sentence to go. “I need to know who found it, so that when I ask a follow-up question in six months, I know whose judgement I’m actually relying on.”

Ruben’s mouth opened again on the beginning of something else — client-facing summary, you know how these reports get written up — and closed without finding a version of it that survived being said next to what Anselm had just said instead.

“I only mention it,” Anselm went on, in the same even voice, “because if this finding is going to sit in a file with my gallery’s name on it for the next three years, I’d like the file to say who actually found it. I don’t think that’s an unreasonable thing to want from an insurer I’m paying rather a lot of money to trust.”

“No,” Marijke said, after a moment, in the flat, recalibrating tone of a woman revising a private judgement in real time. “It isn’t.” She looked at Jo properly for what felt like the first time in the meeting, and wrote something on her legal pad that Jo, upside down and three chairs away, couldn’t read and didn’t need to; she knew exactly whose name it was. “Jo. Talk us through the methodology yourself. Properly, this time.”

“The highlight sits on top of period-correct craquelure instead of inside it,” Jo said, in her own words, at her own pace, with nobody in the room reaching to trim it down to a sentence that sounded better coming out of somebody else’s mouth. “That’s not something a cross-section proves. It’s something you see with a torch, at the right angle, which is what took me to the sampling stage at all. The cross-section from the edge of that highlight shows synthetic ultramarine — round, uniform particles, no mineral impurities. Natural ultramarine, ground from lapis, is irregular and carries trace pyrite and calcite every time, because stone doesn’t grind itself into anything consistent. French ultramarine wasn’t synthesised until the 1820s. This panel is documented, on every certificate in the gallery’s own file, as finished by 1665. I ran the comparison sample from an undisputed area of craquelure to make sure I wasn’t looking at a fluke in my own equipment. It came back natural, exactly as old as it should be. I ran both mounts a third time before I wrote a word of the preliminary.”

“And the confidence level on that,” Marijke said.

“As high as confidence gets before a court asks me to defend it. I’d stand behind it under cross-examination, which is the only bar I actually use.”

Ruben said nothing further. He didn’t have to; the silence around him did the work.

It was, she thought afterward, the strangest twenty minutes of her professional life, not because anything dramatic had happened, but because nothing had — no scene, no accusation, just a man stating a fact clearly enough that it stopped being negotiable, and a room adjusting itself around it the way water finds a new level once you’ve moved the thing that was holding it back.

Marijke closed the meeting with the flat efficiency she closed everything, thanked Anselm for his time, told Ruben she’d want a word before end of day, and caught Jo’s sleeve briefly on the way out, no more than two seconds of contact. “That was good work today,” she said, in a voice pitched for exactly the two of them. “The talking-through, I mean. Not just the finding.” It was the nearest thing to unqualified praise Marijke had given her in eleven years, and Jo didn’t trust herself to answer it properly, so she said nothing, and let Marijke read that however she chose to.

· · ·Scene break

She didn’t manage to say anything to him before the meeting broke, which she regretted almost immediately and then, standing at the lift with her report clutched against her chest like something that might otherwise be taken from her twice in one lifetime, found she still couldn’t manage even once the corridor had emptied and it was only the two of them waiting for the doors.

“You didn’t need to do that,” she said finally, to the lift doors rather than to him, because that felt marginally safer.

“I know I didn’t need to.” He said it simply, the way he said most things that mattered to him, without asking her to make it easier by disagreeing. “I did it because it was true, and because I’d rather be the kind of client who says the true thing in the room than the kind who says it afterward, privately, where it costs him nothing.”

“It’ll cost you something with Ruben. He’ll remember it.”

“I imagine he will.” He didn’t sound especially troubled by that. “I’ve spent three years being careful about who I upset and when, mostly for reasons that had nothing to do with courage and everything to do with not wanting one more difficult conversation in a life that already had too many. This felt like a reasonable place to stop doing that.”

“Because of a pigment sample.”

“Because of you, doing the work properly, and a room that was about to let someone else own it.” He said it without any weight on the word you, which was, she thought, exactly what made it land as hard as it did. “I’d have said something whoever it had happened to. I won’t pretend I wasn’t glad it was you.”

The doors opened. Neither of them got in.

“Nobody’s done that for me before,” Jo said, and heard, appalled, how much smaller her own voice had gone than she’d intended it to. “Not once. In eleven years. There’ve been findings before this one. Good ones. I’ve watched every single one of them get somebody else’s name on the summary, and I’ve never once said anything, because saying something has always seemed like a worse risk than just letting it happen.”

“And today?”

“Today somebody said it before I had to decide whether I had the nerve to.”

“Then eleven years is a very long time to have been the only person in the room who noticed what you’d actually found,” Anselm said, and stepped back to let the doors close between them without either of them moving.

The lift dropped six floors in the particular silence of a building at the end of a working day, and Jo stood in it alone with her own name, finally, on a piece of paper that mattered, and no idea at all what she was supposed to do with the rest of what had just happened to her — only that she wanted, with an intensity that unsettled her considerably more than the pigment sample had, to walk back up those same six floors and ask him to say it again.
