The Contract

Nell Hartigan had been in the house eleven minutes when the drawing-room door locked itself behind her.

She did not pull the handle a second time. Nine years in the guild had taught her that a house took its measure of a person from the first thing she did about a closed door, and a second pull would have told it more than Nell wanted it knowing about her on a Tuesday morning she was not yet being paid for. She set her case down on the carpet instead, slow and flat, and turned round to read the room she was now standing in rather than the one she had meant to leave.

Cold first, because cold was the easiest thing to be wrong about. It was late October and the house was a great house, so there should have been a draught off the window glass and another off the chimney, and there was neither. The cold in this room sat in the middle of the floor, out over the carpet, well away from anything that could have made it. Nell had walked through that cold on her way in and had taken it for weather. It was not weather.

Light second. Two tall windows facing north, the sort of grey, ungenerous light that made a room look like a photograph of itself, and a fire laid in the grate and not lit.

Hands third, always. The woman in the chair beside the cold hearth had hers folded in her lap, one thumb pressed hard enough into the opposite palm to have gone white at the nail, which was not composure. Composure was in her back and her shoulders and her chin. Whatever the hands were doing, they were doing on their own.

“That happens,” the Duchess of Vantreux said, in the tone of a woman remarking on rain she had stopped resenting some time ago. “I should have warned you before you tried the handle.”

“You could have warned me before I signed the contract, your grace. But here we both are.” Nell straightened up. “Guild standard is that I get a full accounting of the manifestations before I take a fee. A door that locks itself with no key in it is item one. What else is on the list?”

“The fourth step of the east stairs creaks whether or not anyone is standing on it. The library fire lights itself on cold nights, which I have never complained of. Cold in rooms that have fires burning in them.” She paused, and it was a measured pause, the sort a person builds ahead of time. “And my husband died on those stairs eighteen months ago, which you already know, because it is the whole reason you have a contract with me at all.”

She said it the way a person says a sentence she has practised until it comes out sounding like nothing, and that, more than the door, was the first thing that made Nell stop looking at the room and start looking at her.

The file gave her age as thirty-five. Dark hair pinned with more care than a grey Tuesday required, half-mourning cut by somebody who knew her measurements, and that white thumbnail. Nell was thirty, had cleared forty-some houses in nine years, and had sat across from widows of every kind the work produced. There were two sorts of fear in that chair, in her experience, and only two. There was the client frightened of what was in the house. And there was the client frightened of what it would cost her to say aloud what was in the house.

The duchess had the second sort. Nell did not yet know what the sentence was that she was not saying.

“Your fire’s laid and it isn’t lit,” Nell said. “It’s four degrees in here.”

“It isn’t lit before four o’clock.”

“Whose rule is that?”

There was a small silence, no longer than a held note. “It has always been the arrangement of the house,” the duchess said, and went no further, and Nell wrote the arrangement of the house on the inside of her skull, where she kept the things she was not going to ask about on day one.

“Then I’ll keep my coat.” She crouched, unfastened the case, and took out the ledger — plain buckram, her licence number inked on the flyleaf, the pages ruled in two columns. “Before we go further. This is a guild ledger. An inspector reads it, and what’s written in it is what the guild knows. If you want a thing on the record, say it to me in a sentence I can copy down.”

“You copy it exactly?”

“Exactly. That’s rather the point of me.”

The duchess rose. She crossed the room without hurry, past Nell, to the door that had locked, and Nell got up off her heels to watch her do it, because this was the part of a first hour that was usually worth more than everything a client said in it.

“Try it,” Nell said.

She need not have. The duchess put her hand to the handle and the door opened at once, smooth on the hinge, no catch and no give in it, swinging wide onto the corridor and the grey light at the end of it — opening the way a door opens when it has been waiting for somebody it knows.

Nell looked at the open door. Then at the woman standing in it. Then she went back to the wood, laid two fingers flat against the grain above the lock, and held them there, feeling for the hum a real haunting leaves in old timber, the low dragging note of something that has not gone where it was meant to go. She had felt it forty-some times. She knew it the way she knew her own pulse.

It was not in this door. There was something in the house — she could feel it the way you feel a person standing in a dark room before they speak, low and far back behind the walls, attentive — but it was not in the wood, and it had none of that dead drag to it.

“That isn’t how a haunting works,” Nell said.

“It has never hurt me.” The duchess’s voice had dropped, and she stood very straight in the doorway with her hands at her sides now, nothing to hold them down with. “I should like that on your record, Miss Hartigan, before you start pointing instruments at it. Whatever else it is, whatever the county has settled on calling it — it has never once hurt me.”

Nell uncapped her pencil and wrote it, and read it back flat, which was the only kindness a ledger allowed. “Client states the manifestation has never caused her harm. That’s on the record. It stays there.”

“Thank you.”

“Don’t thank me yet, because the next question’s the one you won’t like.” Nell looked up. “If it’s never hurt you, why send for the guild at all?”

“Because it shut my sister-in-law in the linen room for four hours in November,” the duchess said, fast, the whole of it coming out on one breath the way rehearsed things do when the nerve behind them is running short, “and Sibyl has not stopped describing it since, in every drawing room between here and Ambry, with her wrists held out. I am obliged to choose between my reputation and my own house. I have chosen. A fortnight, Miss Hartigan. Sixty guineas and a fortnight, and I am told the guild’s methods are thorough.”

Nell had read the contract twice on the post-chaise. It was not the guild’s standard form. Four clauses had been struck out of it and the replacements written in a small, level hand, and there was no solicitor’s name anywhere on the page. The same hand had signed it at the foot: Héloïse Vantreux, and nothing after the name, no title, no seal.

“They’re thorough,” she said, “because they’re final. I’d sooner say that plainly now, since you’ve been decent about warnings. When the guild clears a house, it doesn’t negotiate with what’s in it. It burns the thing out, root and residue, and it doesn’t ask it its side first. There’s no procedure for asking. There isn’t a form for it. Not once in the guild’s history has anybody been required to find out what we were putting out.”

She said it watching the duchess’s face, the way she said it in every house at exactly this point, because that sentence told her more about what she had walked into than any instrument she owned.

The duchess did not move. But something went through her and stopped, the way a sound stops in a room with heavy curtains, and it was not the look of a woman relieved to hear that a dead thing would be dealt with efficiently.

Nell had seen that expression once before, in a house nine years ago, on a woman whose file she still could not read through without her hands going cold. It was not fear of the haunting. It was fear of the cure, worn so thin over the face beneath that it had gone nearly transparent, and what showed through it looked more like grief for a thing not yet lost.

Then it was folded away, neatly, the way good linen goes back in the press.

“It is a haunting, Miss Hartigan. Nothing more complicated than that. My husband died an unkind death in an unkind house, and I should like the house to stop remembering it where my guests can see.”

“All right,” Nell said.

She said it because it was the first quarter of the first hour of a fourteen-day contract and it was not her place to call a duchess a liar in her own drawing room. She said it because her bond was nine years old with four years still owing on it, and the guild had lent her that money when she was twenty-one and had nothing to lend against but her hands, and a woman who breaks a bond goes back to the mill town she came from with the whole street watching. And she said it while every instinct she had built since then stood up quietly at the back of her mind and told her she had just been handed the first lie of what was going to be a considerable number.

“Then let’s start with the stairs,” she said.

· · ·Scene break

The east staircase was, by any honest measure, an ordinary stair. Worn oak treads, a runner gone thin down the middle from four generations of feet, a window at the landing letting in the same grey light as everywhere else in Wexhall, and the smell of beeswax over cold stone.

The fourth step creaked as they came up it. It creaked again once they had both passed it, with nothing standing on it at all, and the duchess did not remark on this, which told Nell how long it had been going on.

She knelt on the step above and put her palm flat to the grain and waited.

Timber holds what happens on it. That was the first thing the guild taught, before salt, before the glass, before any of the rest: wood remembers a death the way plaster remembers damp, and a violent one leaves a mark a competent reader can find from the other side of a room. Eighteen months was nothing. Eighteen months ought to have come up under her hand like a hot plate.

She got almost nothing at all. A faint graining of something old and domestic, and beneath it that same low attentive note she had felt in the drawing room, coming from no particular direction and going nowhere near the fourth step.

“He fell from the landing,” the duchess said, from two steps above her. She had her arms wrapped round herself against a cold that Nell, kneeling in the same stairwell in the same draught, could not feel at all. “Or so the physician said. I was not in the house that evening. I was in Ambry. I was told the details afterwards, the way one is told a story rather than shown a wound.”

“You weren’t here.” Nell kept her eyes on the wood and her voice level and filed it. “And the house started the week after the funeral.”

“Careful, Miss Hartigan.”

It came out with an edge on it, the first edge in an hour, and then the duchess appeared to hear herself and put it away.

“I beg your pardon. I have had a year of people implying things about that evening with their eyebrows instead of their mouths, and I find I have very little patience left over for the version that arrives dressed as professional observation.”

“Then I’ll ask it with my mouth, your grace, since you’d sooner have it that way.”

Nell sat back on her heels and looked up. The duchess looked down at her and did not look away, and neither did Nell, and it went on a fraction longer than the question wanted — long enough that Nell noticed it, the way she noticed the temperature of a room, and then had to notice that she had noticed, which was worse.

“Did you want him dead?”

The silence had weight in it. Not the silence of a woman insulted. The silence of something deciding whether it trusted the room enough to be said in it, and for a moment Nell thought she had misjudged the entire afternoon and would spend thirteen more days shut out of every door in the house that mattered.

“I have not,” the duchess said at last, very quietly, “allowed myself to answer that question in eighteen months. I am not going to begin with a stranger I met an hour ago, on my own staircase, however direct her mouth is.”

She turned and started down, one hand trailing the banister, her skirts making the small dry sound skirts make on old oak.

“Finish your assessment, Miss Hartigan. You have thirteen days left to earn the right to ask me that again.”

The fourth step creaked once behind her, after she had passed it.

Under Nell’s palm, the wood had gone warm.
