Reading the House

Nell worked a house after dark when the client allowed it, because a house after dark had fewer manners. The servants were up the back stairs, the fires were down, the day’s traffic of feet and voices had gone out of the rooms, and whatever a building had been holding in all day it generally stopped holding somewhere after eleven.

She began at the foot of the east stairs at half past, with the ledger under her arm and a lamp she did not light.

The rule was walk it first and measure it second, and she kept the rule because the first walk was the only one she would ever take through this house as a stranger, and a stranger noticed what a resident had stopped being able to see. So she went slowly — hall to corridor to gallery door to the back passage and round again — and what she noticed on the first circuit was that the cold came with her.

It was not a draught. She stopped twice to be sure, once in the middle of the long corridor and once at the turn by the gun-room, and both times the cold arrived a moment after she did and settled round her legs and up under her cuffs like water finding its level. When she moved on, it came too. When she stood still for four minutes by the hall clock, counting, it stood still with her, and the air two yards further down the corridor stayed the ordinary chill of an October house with its chimneys shut.

Residue does not follow. That was the whole of it, flat and inconvenient. A haunting sits where it died, in the timber or the plaster or the one stair it cannot leave, and the cold it throws is a cold with an address. Nell had cleared forty-some houses and every cold in all of them had stayed where she found it, waiting to be found again.

She wrote it at the window ledge, standing, in the two ruled columns. Cold follows the operator on circuit. Not fixed to any room. Query draught — no. Query instrument — none in use.

Then she stood a moment with the pencil against her lip, because the honest second line was cold appears to attend a person and she was not putting that in a guild ledger on day one with nothing under it.

The doors were the next item.

The long gallery would not open for her. The handle turned and the latch lifted and the door did not move, not with a shoulder against it and not with the flat of her boot on the jamb, which she tried once and then stopped trying, because a house watched what you did about a closed door and she had already told this one enough about herself in the drawing room that morning.

The still-room door, twenty feet further on, opened before she touched it. Not a swing and not a bang. It came off the latch with a small domestic click and stood ajar by four inches, and the room beyond was dark and smelled of dried apple and cloves, and there was nothing in it that wanted her.

She stood between the two doors for a while with her arms folded.

“You’re deciding,” she said aloud, which was unprofessional, and then, “All right. Noted.”

There was a light under the kitchen door and a smell coming out from under it worth more to Nell at midnight than anything else Wexhall had offered her that day.

Mrs Pardoe was at the long table with her sleeves rolled and her forearms floured to the elbow, knocking back a dough that would be tomorrow’s bread, and she looked up with no surprise whatever.

“You’ll be the guild woman.”

“Nell Hartigan.”

“Sit down, Miss Hartigan, you’re blue.” She jerked her chin at the range. “There’s a pot on and a cup on the shelf behind you. I’ve fed four of you over the years, counting the two the family sent for and the one the rector brought, and not one of you ever came in warm.”

Nell poured herself tea and sat where she could see the dough, which she found restful in a way she had never examined. The kitchen was the first room in the house that had been the temperature a room ought to be.

“Twenty-six years, is it?”

“Twenty-seven at Michaelmas. Under his grace’s mother, then his grace, and now her grace.” Mrs Pardoe turned the dough and folded it. “You’ll want to know what I’ve seen, so I’ll save you the asking. The fourth step creaks. The linen-room door stuck with Miss Sibyl behind it, which she has made a good deal of. There’s a cold in the blue bedroom that comes and goes. The library fire lights of a cold night, and it lays its own draw better than Joan does, and I have never said so to Joan.”

“And what do you call all that?”

“The house.”

“That’s not a name, Mrs Pardoe.”

“It’s the only one I’ve got that has ever been accurate.” She set the dough in its bowl and drew a cloth over it. “The rector called it an affliction. Miss Sibyl calls it a haunting and says it with her wrists out. You’ll have a word for it in that book of yours by Friday. I’ve been in this kitchen twenty-seven years and nothing in this house has ever wanted a thing off me. I don’t know what you call something that has been under the same roof as you for a decade and never once asked you for anything. I call it the house.”

Nell wrote that down too, and Mrs Pardoe watched her do it without objecting, which not everybody did.

“The cold,” Nell said. “Does her grace feel it?”

Mrs Pardoe thought about that longer than she had thought about anything else.

“No,” she said. “Not the way we do. She’ll have a shawl on the stairs in June, and she’ll sit in that morning room through a January with no fire till four and never say a word about it. I used to think she was hardy. I don’t any more.”

“What do you think now?”

“That she’s cold where it doesn’t come from the weather,” Mrs Pardoe said, “and warm where it does, and I am a cook, Miss Hartigan, and that is the end of what I will say about my mistress at midnight to a woman with a ledger.”

· · ·Scene break

The library was the coldest room Nell had been in all evening, which is to say the cold had followed her into it and then, for the first time since eleven o’clock, appeared to lose interest.

She set the case on the reading table and took the resonance glass out of its baize.

It was a guild instrument and a plain one: a stoppered tube the length of her forearm, a hair-fine brass needle hung down the middle of it on a thread finer than the needle, and a scale etched up one side in tenths. It did one thing. It found the signature of whatever was working in a room and showed you the shape of the working in the swing of the needle. Dead residue hummed it low and even, a steady drag, the same note forty-some times in nine years, monotonous as a held breath in a pipe. Every apprentice learned that note in her first month and none of them ever forgot it, because it was the one sound in the work that never varied.

Nell set the glass on its stand in the middle of the library floor, stood back, and waited for the low even hum.

The needle did not do it.

It moved — the room was full of something and the instrument knew it — but it moved unevenly, in a rise and a fall and a rise, without settling on any tenth of the scale long enough to be read. She gave it four minutes. She gave it eight. She shifted the stand six feet to the left, under the window, and the swing changed its shape and kept its restlessness.

“You’ve been shaken about in a post-chaise for two days,” Nell told the instrument, and took it apart on the reading table and rebuilt it, thread, needle, stopper, and set it up again, and watched it do the same thing.

She sat down on the library steps with her elbows on her knees and looked at it.

The trouble with being good at a job for nine years was that you got a sentence in your head before you had any right to it, and the sentence was there now, as plain as if somebody had come in and said it. That is not a dead thing. She turned it over. She thought about what a preliminary report with that sentence in it would look like on an inspector’s desk, and what the guild did with an exorcist who wrote down what she felt instead of what she could prove, and she put the sentence back where she had got it from.

Glass indicates irregular signature, she wrote. Instrument checked and rebuilt. Reading repeated at three positions. No dead-residue note obtained. Assessment continuing.

All of it was true, and it was arranged so that a man reading quickly would think she was having trouble with her equipment.

That was the first arranging she did. She noticed herself doing it.

The fire lit itself at twenty past one in the morning.

She was six feet from the grate and looking straight at it, which she was grateful for afterwards, because it meant she could write what she saw instead of what she assumed. There was no flare and no crack of ignition. The laid kindling had flame in it, the way a match has flame in it a half-second after the strike, and the draw took, and the light came up the walls and over the spines of four thousand books, and the room began, without hurry, to be warm.

Ten seconds later, or perhaps fifteen, Nell heard a footfall in the corridor.

The Duchess of Vantreux came in with a shawl over her nightgown and her hair down her back and stopped just inside the door, and Nell watched her look at the burning fire the way a woman looks at a dog that has got up on the furniture again.

“I did tell you it does that.”

“You did.” Nell got up off the steps. “It did it about a quarter of a minute before you came through that door. I’d like that in the book with the time against it, if you’ve no objection.”

“Why the time?”

“Because I write the times. Sometimes they mean something in a fortnight that they didn’t mean on the night.” Nell wrote it. “Couldn’t sleep, your grace?”

“I saw the light under the door from the gallery and assumed the fire had got ambitious.” Héloïse came a few steps further in. “You have been walking my corridors since eleven. Bess heard you go past twice and came up to tell me a woman was pacing, in the voice she keeps for burglars.”

“Did she. And you came down yourself instead of sending anybody.”

“It is my house,” the duchess said. “At night, at any rate.” Nell heard the second half of that arrive and be regretted, and let it go by without putting a hand out to it.

“Sit down, then, and I’ll read you the day. You said this morning you wanted to know what went on the record. That’s what’s on it.”

Héloïse took the chair nearest the fire, which Nell noticed, because it was the nearest and because she took it without any of the arranging that had gone on in the drawing room that morning. Her hands were loose in her lap. Nobody was watching except a woman she was paying.

Nell read it out flat, the way she read a ledger to any client: the cold on circuit, the gallery door that would not open and the still-room door that had, Mrs Pardoe’s twenty-seven years, the glass rebuilt and the glass unread, the fire at twenty past one. She put nothing in her voice. She had learned that at twenty-two and it was the most useful thing she owned.

At no dead-residue note obtained the duchess’s hands stopped being loose.

“What does that mean, in plain words?”

“In plain words it means that whatever else is going on in this house, I have not yet found the thing the guild sent me to find.” Nell closed the ledger on her finger. “I’ve been at it fourteen hours. That isn’t a finding. That’s a first day.”

“But you do not expect to find it.”

“I think it’s one in the morning and you’re asking me for a conclusion I haven’t earned.” Nell looked at her over the top of the book. “I’ll tell you what I do know, since we’re both up. Everything in this house tonight has either got out of my way or shut itself in my face, and neither of those is a thing a dead man does. Dead men don’t choose. They repeat.”

The fire put a log down into itself with a soft collapse. The duchess did not move at all, and her face did what it had done that morning, the fold and the press and the linen put back in the press, and Nell would have given a good deal to know what it cost her to do it that fast.

“Thank you for reading it to me,” she said. “Nobody has read me a record before. They summarise.”

“Summaries are how a thing gets away from you.”

“Yes,” said Héloïse. “I know.”

She said goodnight and went, and the library door, which Nell had left standing open, stayed open behind her.

Nell sat a while with the ledger shut on her knee. The fire had been laid for the following afternoon and was burning at two in the morning against the arrangement of the house, and nobody had come to put it out, and the cold that had walked the corridors at her heel for three hours had not come back into the room since the duchess sat down in it.

She wrote none of that down. She went up the east stairs to bed, and the fourth step creaked under her, and creaked again behind her with nothing on it at all, and she found, walking away from it in the dark, that she had stopped minding.
