The East Stairs

Sibyl Vantreux was waiting for her at the foot of the east stairs at eight in the morning, in grey, with a small book in her hand, and Nell understood within four seconds that she had been waiting there long enough to be found waiting.

“Miss Hartigan. Sibyl Vantreux. My brother’s sister.”

“I’d worked that out, ma’am.”

“I thought it best we speak before you begin, since nobody has thought to arrange it.” She had a way of saying nobody that put a name in the room without using it. “You will want an account of the disturbances. Her grace will have given you the pretty version.”

“Her grace gave me a list. I’d be glad of a second one.”

That was the right answer, and Nell had known it would be. Sibyl opened her book.

It was an inventory, and it was a good one, which Nell had not expected. Dates, rooms, weather, who was in the house. A candlestick off the mantel in the blue bedroom in September and the mark still in the carpet. The gun-room door fast for two days in the spring and free on the third. The footman, Perrin, off the top of a ladder in the long gallery in August, a broken wrist and no ladder fault anybody could find. And November, and the linen room, four hours between the presses with the door sound in its frame and Bess on the other side of it pulling until her hands bled.

She held her wrists out while she said it. Nell looked at them, because looking was the job, and there was nothing on them now but forty-four years of skin.

“Four hours,” Sibyl said, “and I did not scream for the first two, because I did not wish to frighten the maids. You may put that in your book or not as you please.”

“It’s in it. Who let you out?”

“The door let me out.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

“No.” Sibyl closed the inventory. “Her grace came up. The door opened. It had been opening for nobody at all for four hours and it opened while she was still six feet from it, and if you wish to make something of that, Miss Hartigan, you may do it somewhere I cannot hear you, because I have spent a year not making anything of it, and it has cost me.”

There it was, then, all of it, offered in one go by a woman who did not know she was offering it. Nell wrote it down in the flat words and did not look up.

“One more question, ma’am, and then I’ll get out of your way. Is her grace afraid of this house?”

“Héloïse,” said Sibyl, “is afraid of very little, and it is the most frightening thing about her.” She smoothed her cuff. “She is also a widow of thirty-five with no man in the county to speak for her, an income under a trust, and a reputation that will not survive a second winter of this. I have written to her cousins. I manage her correspondence, her callers and her appetite, none of which she attends to on her own account, and I will tell you plainly that I did not want the guild in this house and that I am glad you have come. Both of those are true. I find most true things come in pairs.”

· · ·Scene break

Salt was for the dead, and Nell laid it anyway, because procedure did not stop being procedure because a house had been rude to you.

She drew the line across the east landing at half past nine, a finger’s width of guild salt from skirting to skirting, poured from the horn the way she had been taught at twenty-one and had poured it several hundred times since. Residue cannot cross a salt line without dragging it. That is the whole of the theory and it is a good theory; it has been keeping dead things off landings for two hundred years. Break the round, read the break, and the break tells you which way the thing goes and how heavily.

She sat down on the third step from the bottom with the ledger on her knees and waited three hours.

At twenty past ten the fourth step creaked, above her and behind her, with nobody on the stairs but Nell, who was sitting on the third. At eleven it creaked twice. At a quarter to twelve Bess came down with an armful of sheets and went through the salt and apologised for it, and Nell told her not to mind, and swept the print out and redrew it.

At half past twelve she went up and looked at the line.

It was perfect. Three hours of a manifestation working a staircase it was supposed to be bound to, and the salt lay where it had been poured, level as a ruled pencil line, undisturbed from wall to wall.

Nell crouched over it for a long time.

There were two readings. One was that there was nothing there, and the stair creaked because old oak creaks and she had imagined the rest of it, which would have been an easier morning for everybody and was not true, because she had heard it four times and written down the hour. The other was that whatever went up and down these stairs was not the sort of thing salt was invented for.

She put her palm flat on the fourth tread, the way she had on day one, and waited for what an eighteen-month-old violent death ought to hand her — the heat, the dragging note, the point in the grain where the event sat and kept sitting.

She got beeswax and boots and four generations. A man’s weight going up, ten thousand times, worn into the front of the tread. A woman’s, lighter, at the outside edge where the runner was thinner, as though she had gone up and down her own stairs for thirteen years keeping to the side of them.

And nothing else. No mark. A man had died on this stair and the stair had not kept it, and Nell had never in her life met timber that forgot.

She wrote no impression of the event recovered at any point on the flight; see also glass, day one and underlined none of it.

· · ·Scene break

The door at the end of the east corridor was the last thing she tried that afternoon, and the only door in the house that felt, under her hand, like a decision that had already been made and would not be revisited.

“That was my brother’s study,” Sibyl said, from the corridor behind her. She moved quietly for a woman who did nothing else quietly. “It has been shut since the week of the funeral. It shut itself on a Tuesday, and no key in the house has turned in it since, and her grace’s key is the same as mine and fits as badly.”

“Has she tried?”

“Once.” Sibyl paused. “She did not try twice, and she did not send for a locksmith, and when I proposed one she said the room contained nothing she required. I have thought a great deal about that sentence.”

“So will I,” said Nell.

· · ·Scene break

Dinner was at half past seven because dinner had been at half past seven since before Héloïse Vantreux came to the house, and Nell learned the rest of the rules over the soup by the simple method of watching where everything went.

The table sat twelve and was laid for three. The duchess did not sit at the head of it. She sat at the foot, in the third chair from the corner, with the empty head of the table twelve feet away and a chair pushed up to it, and Sibyl sat at her right hand and did the talking, and nobody mentioned the arrangement, because it was not an arrangement. It was the way the room was.

The drawing-room fire had been lit at four o’clock. Nell had been in the corridor at the time and had heard Joan lay the match at four exactly, the way you lay a match at a set hour when the hour is a rule and not a preference.

There were things the table did not discuss, and Nell mapped them by walking into them. Money was one; she asked what a house like this cost to keep through a winter and the answer came back from Sibyl, pleasant and immediate and about the weather. The county was another. The late duke was a third, and that one was interesting, because it was not grief that shut it. Grief has a texture. This was housekeeping.

“Do you play, your grace?” Nell asked, over the mutton. “There’s a piano in the drawing room with the lid down and the candles still in the sconces.”

“I did.”

“Out of practice?”

“Out of the habit of it,” Héloïse said. “The instrument is in tune. Hensley comes from Ambry twice a year and tunes a piano nobody has opened since the spring of the year before last, and I pay him, and he says nothing, and I have come to look forward to it as one of the more honest transactions of my year.”

Sibyl set her glass down. “Héloïse.”

“Miss Hartigan is cataloguing the house. The piano is in the house.”

“Miss Hartigan is cataloguing a disturbance, not the family.”

“Then she has been unlucky in her posting,” said Héloïse, “because at Wexhall those have been difficult to tell apart for some time,” and she said it lightly, into her wine, and Nell laughed before she had decided whether to, one short unprofessional bark of it in a dining room built for twelve.

Héloïse looked up at her with an expression Nell could not read at all and then put it away.

· · ·Scene break

She got her ten minutes alone with the duchess at the drawing-room door, after Sibyl had gone up with a candle and a look.

“Your grace. Two questions and then I’ll leave you your evening.”

“You have had rather more than two a day so far.”

“I’m behind, then.” Nell stood with her back to the fire that had been lit at four and was now burning down. “The fire in here at four. Dinner at half seven. You at the foot of your own table. The gallery shut. The piano tuned twice a year with the lid down. Callers on a Thursday by arrangement. That’s not a household, that’s a timetable. Who’s enforcing it?”

The duchess was quiet for a moment.

“Nobody,” she said.

“That’s what I thought. Who set it?”

“My husband. Over thirteen years. Some of it was written down at the beginning, in a fair hand, in a book Mrs Pardoe still keeps in the kitchen drawer because it has the laundry order in the back of it.” Héloïse’s hands were folded, and the thumb was against the opposite palm again, and Nell made herself stop looking at it. “He has been dead eighteen months, Miss Hartigan. The book is not enforced. The staff would not enforce it. I keep it.”

“Why?”

“Because it is what the house does,” she said, “and I am what is left in the house.”

Nell had been in the work nine years and she had a professional face for everything: for the family who had drowned a well, for the man who wanted his wife’s ghost left where it was, for the rector at Kettleby. She used it now and it held, and underneath it something came up in her that was plain, hot and no use to anybody — anger, on behalf of a client, which is the one thing a guild woman is trained out of before she is trained into anything else, because a woman who is angry for a client stops reading the room and starts furnishing it.

“Right,” she said. “Third question, and it’s not on the list. Is there a rule in that book you’d break tomorrow if there were nobody to see?”

The duchess looked at her for a long moment. The fire moved.

“Goodnight, Miss Hartigan,” she said. “Your room is cold, I am told. I have sent up another blanket, which is not in the book either.”

She went out past the door that had locked itself on Nell the previous morning, and it stood open for her, and she did not appear to notice that it had.

Nell wrote up her day at the desk in her room with the extra blanket over her knees: the salt line unbroken, the stair with nothing in it, the study door shut since a Tuesday, the timetable of a dead man kept by a living woman for eighteen months in an empty house.

She did not write down the last thing the duchess had said. She could not have told anyone, then, why not.
