What the Guild Trains For

Clause fourteen of the guild’s standard engagement required the operator to lay the method before the client in plain terms before the method was used, and to note in the ledger the date on which she had done it. Nell had always liked clause fourteen. It was the only place in forty pages where the guild admitted that the person paying might reasonably want to know what was about to happen in her own house.

She did it on the morning of the third day, in the drawing room, with the fire not lit because it was eleven o’clock.

“This is the clearance kit,” she said, and opened the long case on the table. “I’d rather you saw it now than on day fourteen.”

Héloïse came and stood at the other side of the table with her hands behind her back, which was a new arrangement, and looked down at it.

There was not much to look at. Salt, in the horn and in the sealed jar, six pounds of it. A copper bowl, shallow, with the guild mark struck in the base. The iron rod. A folded oilcloth. A little book of the words, printed, thumbed, no thicker than a hymnal.

“It is smaller than I expected.”

“They always are. The work isn’t in the kit.” Nell set the bowl upright. “I’ll tell you what a burn-out is, and I’ll use the words we use, because the polite words are how people end up agreeing to things. The thing in a house is a working. It doesn’t matter what made it — grief, a death, a promise somebody didn’t keep. It’s a working, and a working has a signature, and the ritual finds the signature and takes it out. Not moves it. Not settles it. Takes it out, root, residue and all, so there’s nothing left of it anywhere to come back to. It lasts about forty minutes. It’s very quiet and it isn’t dramatic and there’s nothing to watch.”

“And afterwards?”

“Afterwards the house is a house. Doors do what you do to them. Fires burn when they’re lit.”

“You have done this how many times?”

“Forty-one.”

Héloïse’s hands had come round in front of her. The thumb went into the opposite palm.

“Miss Hartigan,” she said. “May I ask you a question about your guild, and will you answer it as you answered me about the words?”

“Ask it.”

“The ritual finds the signature and takes it out. You said the signature, not the ghost.” She was very still. She had the particular stillness of a woman who has decided in advance how she will stand while she says a thing. “Has the guild ever taken out a working that was not dead?”

The correct answer was on a card in Nell’s head, printed there in her second month, and it went: the method is proven against every class of manifestation known to the guild and the question does not arise. She had said it in nine or ten drawing rooms and it had never yet failed to end a conversation.

“Yes,” she said.

The room got quiet in a way that had nothing to do with the house.

“Once that I know of, because once that I was standing in the room for.” Nell put the little book of the words down on the oilcloth and made herself finish it. “It was my first year. A farmhouse called Kettleby. I carried the salt.”

· · ·Scene break

It rained after noon, hard and flat off the moor, and the two of them ended up in the still-room, because Nell had wanted to test the door that had opened for her on the first night and Héloïse had come with her and neither of them had said anything about why.

There was a bench and a shelf of last year’s preserves and a window running with water. The door behaved like a door. Nell sat on the bench with her back against the cold plaster and found that she was going to talk, and that she had known she was going to since eleven o’clock, and that some part of her had laid the kit out on the table this morning precisely so that she would have to.

“Ask me the rest of it, then,” she said. “You’ve been waiting three hours and you’re too well brought up.”

“I have been waiting three hours,” Héloïse agreed, “and I would rather you told me why you joined a guild that does that, first. If it is all the same to you. I find I want the order that way round.”

Nobody had ever asked her for the order that way round.

“Mill town,” Nell said. “West of here, three days’ post. You’d not have heard of it and there’s nothing in it to hear. My mother carded wool in a shed with no window in it for twenty-two years and her hands were bad by thirty and useless by forty-five, and there were six of us, and I was the one who could do the trick.”

“The trick.”

“Finding. Some people can hear what’s left in a thing. I could do it at nine years old without knowing there was a word for it — put my hand on a wall and tell you what had happened against it. It’s not a gift in a mill town. It’s a way of being strange in a street where everybody’s already tired.” She turned her cuff back and looked at her own wrist. “A guild man came through on an assessment in a farm out past us and heard of me and put the bond in front of me. Two hundred pounds, which nobody in our house had ever seen in one place, paid to the family on the day, and thirteen years of my labour at guild rates against it, and the debt stands on my name until the thirteen are done.”

“Thirteen,” Héloïse said. “And you have been nine years in the guild.”

“Four still owing.” Nell let the cuff down. “It’s not a cruelty. I want to be clear about that, because people from houses like this one hear it and their faces go. Nobody had ever lent me anything. The guild lent me two hundred pounds when I was twenty-one and had nothing to lend against but my hands, and it taught me a trade that no one can take off me, and it fed me. A thing can be the best that ever happened to you and still own you. Both of those are true.”

“I find most true things come in pairs,” Héloïse said.

Nell glanced up. “Your sister-in-law said that to me yesterday morning.”

“She has been saying it since I came to this house. It is a very good sentence and it is doing an enormous amount of work.” Héloïse sat down on the other end of the bench, not near, with the rain behind her. “Kettleby. You said you would tell me.”

· · ·Scene break

“Kettleby’s a farmhouse,” Nell said. “Nine years ago this January. I was twenty-one, three months licensed, junior to a senior named — it doesn’t matter what he was named, he’s retired and it doesn’t matter.”

She had not told it in nine years. It came out in order, which surprised her, and flat, which did not.

“There was a woman in it. Forty years old. She’d been there since her mother died and she kept the place on her own, and she had a brother in the next parish who’d broken her arm when she was twenty-six and put her out of the house twice, and for eleven years he had not been able to get in at that door. Not once. It was on the record. He’d told the constable himself, in a rage, that his sister’s door would not open to him, and that was what started it, because a man complaining loudly enough in the right building is how most of our work begins.

“Locked doors. Cold in the passage. Things off shelves when he came up the lane. The senior wrote it up as a residual haunting on the mother, because the mother had died in the house and there was a death in the parish register and a death in the register is what the form has a line for.” Nell’s voice did not change. “There is no line on the form for the woman is doing it. You can’t write it. The form goes to an inspector and the inspector has a schedule and a schedule has classes of manifestation in it, and hers wasn’t one of them, so it was made into one that was.

“I said it was wrong. I want that on the record too, since we’re keeping one. I said it out loud, once, in a kitchen, to a man twenty years senior to me, on my first winter with four days of my own judgment to put against his. He said: and how many of these have you done, Hartigan? And I said none. And he said: then carry the salt.”

The rain went on against the window.

“Forty minutes,” Nell said. “It’s very quiet and there’s nothing to watch. Afterwards she sat down on her own floor and she did not speak. Not that day and not the next. She did not speak for a year. I know that because I wrote to the rector there every quarter for four years and he answered three of my letters and then stopped, and the third one said she was speaking again and living with a cousin, and that her brother had the farm.”

Héloïse said nothing at all. She had not moved on the bench.

“I never filed a report,” Nell said. “That’s the end of it. There’s a form for dissent by a junior operator. It’s eight lines and it goes to the guild house and it’s read by a clerk and then by a board. I know the number of it. I have known the number of it for nine years. If I’d filed it, the senior would have had a hearing, and I’d have had one too, and a junior three months licensed who breaks with her senior on her first clearance is a junior whose bond gets called in. Two hundred pounds. Which I did not have, and my mother did not have, and which would have gone back onto the family with the whole street watching.

“So I carried the salt and I signed the day-book as second operator and I went back to the guild house and ate my dinner. And I have cleared forty houses since then and every one of them was honest work, and I’ve been half a coward in every one of them, because I have never once asked a house the question I asked that kitchen.”

· · ·Scene break

She stopped. The still-room was cold and neither of them had got up to do anything about it.

“You should not have told me that,” Héloïse said at last.

“No.”

“I mean it as a statement of fact and not a reproach. You have told a client under contract that you concealed a wrongful clearance from your own guild.” She said it precisely, the way she said everything, and it was worse for being accurate. “If I repeated one sentence of it to the inspector you say is coming, you would lose your licence and your bond would be called in. You have handed me that on the third day of a fortnight, in a room with a door that will not stay shut.”

“I know what I’ve done.”

“Why did you do it?”

Nell thought about lying. She thought about the version where it was professional judgment, a considered decision to establish confidence with a difficult client, which was the version she would put in the ledger if she put any of it in the ledger at all.

“Because you asked me a straight question,” she said, “and you’re the first client in nine years who’s asked the one that’s actually dangerous, and I’ve wanted somebody to ask it since I was twenty-one.” She stood up, because sitting down for the rest of this was beyond her. “And now I’ll say the other thing, and then we’ll go back to work. You’ve been decent to me. The blanket, the reading, all of it. You’re not to be, your grace. I’d rather you weren’t. I’m not a guest here. I hold the pen. Whatever I write in that book is what the guild believes about this house and about you, and there’s an inspector at the end of it, and nothing you do for me should ever be because of that. If you’re kind to me, be kind to me on a day when it can’t buy you anything.”

Héloïse got up as well. She was a little taller than Nell and she used none of it.

“Miss Hartigan,” she said. “I have spent thirteen years in a house where every kindness was an instalment on something. I know the difference you are describing better than you do.” She went to the door and put her hand on it and stopped. “For what it is worth, I do not think you were a coward at twenty-one. I think you were a girl who was shown what the price of speaking is, very early, by people who knew what they were doing. Whether you are one now is a different question, and it is not one I can answer for you, and I would not insult you by trying.”

She went out into the passage, and the door of the still-room stayed open behind her, and Nell stood in the cold with her hands at her sides and let herself be seen through by an empty room for a minute and a half.

Then she picked up the ledger and wrote clause fourteen read to the client in full, day three and nothing else at all, and went to find the glass.

Because the trouble with the third day was that she now had two things she could not put in a report — a stair with no death in it and an instrument that would not read — and a preliminary due to a man she had never met, and the only way to turn either of them into something she could sign her name under was to take the glass onto the east stairs at night, with the house asleep and nobody moving in it, and make it say plainly what it had been trying to say since Tuesday.

Tomorrow, then. Tomorrow, late.
