The Wedding File

The email arrived at nine fourteen, subject line “Wedding — 20th June — enquiry,” and Hattie almost gave it to the newest hire before she’d finished the first paragraph, because Thursdays were meant to be for the backlog and not for new clients, and then she read the second paragraph and kept it for herself, the way she kept anything that was well written.

My fiancé and I don’t want the usual thing where the speeches are the part everyone survives rather than enjoys. I’ve been to eleven weddings this year alone. I can tell you which ones I remember and it isn’t the ones with the best florist.

It was signed Thea Whitlock, and it named a glasshouse in Kew, and a date, and asked, almost as an afterthought, whether the agency did the couple’s joint speech as well as vows, because she and “Oli” wanted to write half of it themselves and needed someone who wouldn’t mind being edited.

Hattie liked her immediately, on the strength of one paragraph, which she knew from forty-one weddings was either an excellent sign or a warning she’d regret ignoring, and there was no way yet to tell which.

She wrote back within the hour and had a meeting booked for the following Tuesday, and did not think about the fact that the Southbank photographs were still circulating far longer than a single appearance should have earned, or that she’d started, without quite admitting it to herself, checking her phone at times of day that had nothing to do with work.

Her phone, as if summoned by the thought, produced a text from Luca at half past ten. Market walk is a fortnight Saturday. Kemi wants us at the cheese stall for ninety seconds, minimum, because apparently cheese photographs as “aspirational domesticity.” I have opinions about being reduced to cheese.

You have opinions about everything, she wrote back. It’s your most attractive quality and your worst.

Only quality?

She looked at that for longer than the joke deserved before she typed obviously not and deleted it, and sent instead I’ll bring my own opinions about cheese, don’t worry, which was safer and also, she noted with some irritation at herself, less true.

Thea Whitlock arrived at the agency eleven minutes early, apologised for it twice, and spent the first five minutes of the meeting asking Hattie questions about the espresso machine rather than her own wedding, which Rae later called, accurately, an extremely good sign in a client and an extremely bad one in anyone trying not to like someone.

“Oli proposed the way he does everything,” Thea said, once they’d got the coffee and the small talk out of the way and moved to the sofa with the good light, “which is to say competently, thoroughly, and with absolutely no surprises, and I have never in my life felt safer about anything.” She said it without irony, which Hattie noted and respected. “I don’t want the speech to sound like a magazine wrote it. I want it to sound like two people who chose the boring, correct thing on purpose, because they’d already had the other kind.”

“The other kind.”

“I was engaged before.” Thea said it plainly, the way you’d mention a job you’d left, not a wound you were still carrying. “It ended badly, publicly, and not the way anyone who read about it thinks it ended. I’d rather that not be in the speech, obviously. I’m only telling you because you’ll hear the rest of it from someone eventually, and I’d rather you heard the accurate version from me first.”

Hattie’s pen didn’t move on the page, which was itself a kind of admission, because her pen always moved.

“I appreciate that,” she said, and meant it, and filed the sentence — the accurate version from me first — in the part of her mind that catalogued good lines whether or not a client ever intended to say them out loud twice.

“Anyway.” Thea waved a hand, done with the subject as thoroughly as she’d raised it. “Oli’s brilliant and unimaginative in all the ways I need, and he cried at our engagement dinner over a text from his mother, not from me, which I’ve never let him forget. That’s the marriage. I’d like the speech to know that.”

They spent forty minutes on structure — where the joke went, where the pause went, how long to let a room sit before the line that would make somebody’s mother cry — and Hattie found herself doing the thing she always warned junior writers against, which was falling a little in love with a client’s marriage before a word of the speech existed. It was an occupational hazard she’d developed antibodies to years ago. She noticed, distantly, that the antibodies weren’t working today, and put it down to Thea rather than to anything closer to home.

“You’ve done this a lot,” Thea said, watching Hattie’s pen move without hesitation through a third restructure of the opening line. “Does it stop being interesting? Forty-something weddings in.”

“Forty-one.” Hattie didn’t look up. “And no. Every couple thinks their version of ordinary is the boring one. It never is. There’s always a sentence in there nobody else in the world could have written, if you dig for it instead of reaching for the one that scans.”

“Is that what you’re doing with us? Digging?”

“I’m trying.” Hattie set the pen down, which she rarely did mid-session, because the question deserved a proper answer rather than a professional one. “Most speeches I write are built out of what people are willing to say about each other in front of a room. Yours might actually get built out of what’s true. I don’t get that often. I’d like to keep it, if you’ll let me.”

Thea looked at her for a moment with something that wasn’t quite surprise, more like recalibration, the look of a woman revising her estimate of a stranger upward mid-conversation. “I think I’m going to like working with you,” she said, “which is not a sentence I expected to say to someone I’m paying by the hour.”

“Most of my best relationships start that particular way.”

Near the end, going back over her notes to read a line aloud for Thea’s approval, Thea stopped her.

“Don’t use that one.”

“It’s a good line.”

“It’s true, which is worse.” Thea was smiling, but there was something underneath it that had gone very still. “I said something like that to Oli once, in a bad week, and it came out sounding like an accusation of the person I used to be engaged to, and I don’t want a version of it anywhere near this wedding, even by accident, even wrapped in different words. Cut it.”

Hattie cut it, drew a line through it in the small exact print she used for everything that needed to look final, and instead of throwing the page away, copied the line into a separate document she’d kept for three years without ever quite explaining to herself why: the file of things clients asked her to cut because they were too true to survive being said in front of witnesses. She had forty, maybe fifty lines in it by now, collected the way other people collected postcards, and she had never once used one, because that wasn’t the point of keeping them.

“You’ll notice I didn’t ask what it meant,” Hattie said.

“I noticed. I appreciated it.” Thea gathered her coat. “Most people ask. It’s usually the wrong question.”

“What’s the right one?”

Thea considered this with the same unhurried thoroughness she’d apparently brought to choosing Oli.

“Whether I’d choose it again, knowing what it cost,” she said. “I would. That’s the whole speech, really. Everything else is just finding better words for that one sentence.”

Hattie told Rae about the booking that evening, over the last of the office coffee, and left out the part where she’d liked Thea Whitlock more in ninety minutes than she’d liked most clients across an entire engagement.

“Kew, June,” Rae said, scrolling the deposit invoice on her screen. “Glasshouse. That’s a good venue for the portfolio. Whitlock — is that the property Whitlocks?”

“Property. Her father does something with logistics parks, I didn’t ask more than that.” Hattie was tidying her own notes, squaring the pages the way she always did at the end of a session, though tonight she noticed herself doing it and wondered, uncomfortably, when she’d started noticing habits she’d had for a decade. “The groom’s called Oli. She didn’t give a surname and I didn’t need one for the file.”

“You didn’t ask for one.”

“It wasn’t relevant.”

“It’s always relevant, you’ve told me that yourself, wedding number six or seven, the one where the groom turned out to still be married.” Rae looked up properly. “You liked her. You’ve got the face.”

“I have several faces, apparently, and you’ve catalogued all of them.”

“I’ve catalogued the two that matter. The client face and the Luca face. This was the client face, for what it’s worth, so don’t spiral.” Rae went back to the invoice, then stopped, struck by something. “How is the chef, incidentally. The internet tells me you had cheese opinions on Saturday.”

“The internet exaggerates the cheese.”

“The internet has a photograph of you laughing at something with your whole face, Hattie, which I have not seen you do at a work event since the Kowalski wedding, and that was because the best man fell into the lake.” Rae didn’t look up, which made it land harder still. “I’m just saying. Two files on your desk this month with your handwriting getting looser in both of them. I notice things. It’s the job.”

“I liked her,” Hattie admitted, because there was no version of lying to Rae that had ever once worked, “and it’s inconvenient, because I’ve got a professional habit of not liking clients quite this much before I’ve written a word, and I don’t love not knowing why I’ve made an exception.”

“Maybe she’s just likeable.”

“Maybe.” Hattie closed the folder. “I’ll have a first pass of structure by Friday. I want to get it right before the market walk eats the week.”

Rae didn’t say anything else about it, which was its own kind of comment, and Hattie went home that night and, instead of opening the folder with Thea Whitlock’s notes in it, found herself thinking about the other file — the one with forty lines in it that had never once been used — and wondering, for the first time in three years, what she was actually saving them for.

She’d started it the way most of her private rules started, out of a professional wound rather than a plan. A bride at wedding number eleven had cut the truest line in her own speech — I didn’t marry him because he’s easy, I married him because he stayed after he found out I wasn’t — because her mother-in-law would be in the room, and Hattie had gone home that night unable to stop thinking that the line was better than anything that made it into the final draft, and had written it down so it would exist somewhere, even unsaid. Every line since had joined it for the same reason: too true to survive a room, too good to let disappear entirely. She had never once considered that the file might be less about other people’s courage than about her own absence of it, until tonight, with Thea’s line sitting fresh at the bottom of the page in her own handwriting.

She didn’t open that one either. She went to bed, and set an alarm for the market walk, and told herself the two files had nothing to do with each other, which was, she would come to understand within a month, the single least accurate line she’d written all year.

Somewhere in the city Luca was almost certainly already asleep, or plating something for the next day’s service that would never make a menu, and Hattie lay in the dark doing the thing she did to every draft before she trusted it: reading it back one more time, listening for the sentence that didn’t sound like her yet, and finding, uncomfortably, that most of the ones she kept circling back to lately weren’t about a wedding at all.
