The True Line

The drawing wouldn’t hold still, so Daniel Sowande put his hands on the other two corners and held it flat against the tiles for me, and that was the whole problem, right there, at nine forty on a Tuesday morning in January.

His hands. Flat on a roll of A1 paper. Nothing else.

I ran my thumbnail down the long diagonal of the truss and felt the line catch where it shouldn’t, and I did not look up, because if I looked up he would be looking back with that patient attention he brings to everything, and I had already decided — twice this month — that I was not going to keep noticing it.

“There,” I said. “That’s not true.”

“The line or the truss?”

“The line. Whoever drew this put the tie-beam an inch and a half low and then built the rest of the drawing to agree with it.” I moved my thumb along to the junction. “Everything downstream of here is polite fiction.”

“1903 draughtsmen were very polite.”

“1903 draughtsmen were paid by the sheet.”

Behind us, in the great cold cave of the pool hall, Councillor Aluko coughed into her scarf and said, “Sorry — is that a problem?” in the voice of a woman who had been promised forty-five minutes and had already given us fifty.

The Ivyholt Baths in January are not a room. They’re a climate. Sixty feet of barrelled glass roof, most of it painted out in the forties and never repainted, so the light comes down grey-green and makes everyone look recently drowned. The pool itself has been dry since 2009. Someone in the interim had filled the deep end with stacked plastic chairs, which is the single most depressing thing I have ever seen in a listed building, and I have seen a Grade II chapel with a hot tub in the chancel.

“It’s a problem,” I said, “but it’s a knowable problem.”

“It’s not a problem,” Daniel said, at the same time.

We both stopped. Councillor Aluko looked between us with the expression of someone watching two people discover they’re on different trains.

I should say, before this goes further, that I liked Daniel Sowande. Everyone at Aldgate & Finn liked Daniel Sowande. He had arrived in May as our conservation architect, sat through eight months of meetings, learned the names of the two women in accounts and the man who empties the bins, and never once explained my own drawings back to me. That is a lower bar than it ought to be. He cleared it without appearing to notice it was there.

“Go on,” I said. “Say your version. I’ll say mine after and then we’ll see whose the councillor likes.”

“That’s a terrible way to run a project.”

“It’s how every project is run. I’m just saying it out loud.”

Councillor Aluko laughed, which was a small victory, and Daniel let go of the drawing and straightened up, and the paper curled itself shut like something offended.

“My version is that the roof is failing where the Victorians told us it would fail,” he said. “The trusses are fine. The shoes are corroded, the wall plate’s gone spongy at the west end, and the whole thing is sitting on brick that’s been wet since about 1970. That’s not a structural mystery, it’s a maintenance bill nobody paid for fifty years. We fix the ends. We keep the trusses.”

“And my version,” I said, “is that I agree with everything you just said except the last three words.”

“They were my favourite three words.”

“They usually are.” I crouched and unrolled the drawing again, holding it myself this time, one knee on the freezing tile, and pointed at the fourth truss from the shallow end. “That one. Look at the camber. It’s flat.”

He crouched too. To his credit he actually looked, for a long time, the way he does — head slightly tilted, mouth shut, no performance of expertise while he’s still gathering it.

“It’s flat,” he agreed.

“It was built with a two-inch rise. It’s flat now. So it has moved, and something has taken that movement, and I don’t yet know what.”

“So you want to open it up.”

“I want to open one. Truss four. And I want a level survey on all fourteen before either of us tells this woman what her building needs, because right now we’d both be guessing and only one of us would be dressed for it.” I glanced at his coat, which was beautiful, and wool, and entirely wrong for a building with no heating and a river of January air moving through the broken lights at the north end.

“This coat was an act of optimism.”

“It was an act of something.”

Councillor Aluko said, from behind us: “How much is one truss?”

“Six thousand,” I said, “including the scaffold and making good. Against a forty-thousand-pound difference in the roof scheme, depending on the answer.”

“And if I say no?”

“Then I write you a report with the word assumed in it nine times, and in four years somebody opens that truss anyway and finds out what I would have found out on the fourteenth of January.”

There was a silence with the particular quality that silences have in empty swimming pools, which is to say it went somewhere and came back.

“Do the one,” she said. “Send me the number by Friday. Mr Sowande, you look like you’re going to say something.”

“I was going to say she’s right,” Daniel said. “I’d just like it noted that I got there second by about thirty seconds, and only because I was distracted by the chairs in the deep end.”

“They’re a crime,” I said.

“They’re a cry for help.”

Councillor Aluko left. Her heels went up the tiled stairs and out through the double doors, and then the building did that thing it does when the last other person leaves, where the silence expands to fill sixty feet of roof, and the pigeons resettle, and you become newly aware of standing in a place built for four hundred bodies and holding two.

Daniel rolled the drawing. I made notes on the survey sheet for truss four, which took longer than it needed to.

“Can I ask you something,” he said, “about the thumbnail thing?”

“The what?”

“You do it on every drawing. You run your nail along a line like you’re checking whether it’s straight. You did it on the Faraday Street elevations too.” He put the roll under his arm. “You can’t feel a line through paper. So what are you actually doing?”

Here is the thing I have not said yet, and should, because everything after this depends on it: I have been married for eleven years to a man called Martin Lund, and I love him, and on the fourteenth of January a colleague asked me a question about my hands and I felt something go over in my chest like a book falling off a shelf.

Not because it was a clever question. Because he’d noticed, and then waited eight months to ask, and then asked as though my answer might genuinely be interesting.

“I’m listening to it,” I said.

“To the drawing.”

“To the drawing. Paper’s got a grain. Old linen-backed stuff especially. If a line was drawn confidently it’s one movement and it runs with the grain or across it cleanly, and if it was fudged — if somebody corrected it, or copied it off another sheet, or drew it to make a number work — you can feel the hesitation. The nail catches.” I shrugged, which is a thing I do when I’ve said more than I meant to. “It’s not mystical. It’s like handwriting. You can tell when someone’s lying in handwriting.”

“Can you.”

“You can tell when someone’s hesitating in handwriting. Lying is a bigger claim.”

He was quiet for a second. Not an awkward second. A considering one.

“My father could tell whether a wall was straight by putting his cheek against it,” he said. “Not his eye. His cheek. I used to think it was showing off. I’m now fairly sure he just had a bad eye and never told anyone.”

“That’s a much better story than mine.”

“It’s not a competition, Tess.”

“Everything’s a competition. It’s how I was raised. My mother once judged a Christmas.”

He laughed — properly, out loud, which in that room went up and came back down off the glass — and I stood there in my steel toe-caps with my clipboard against my chest and thought, with great clarity, this is the best hour of my week and it is a Tuesday morning and I am at work.

That was all. That was the whole event. If you’d filmed it you’d have thirty seconds of two colleagues laughing about a swimming pool.

We walked out together as far as the bus stop on Ivyholt Road. He talked about the tiles — the ones behind the old ticket booth, which are original and green and worth more than the roof — and I said the right things back, and at the corner he stopped.

“Thursday,” he said. “Not this week. Next. If we’re going to have an argument about truss four with numbers in it, I’d rather have it before we’re both in front of Hester.”

“You want to argue in advance.”

“I want to rehearse. It’s different. It’s got a better name.” He put his hand up, half a wave. “Bring the level survey. I’ll bring something hot to drink, since apparently I’m the one who needs it.”

“You said that, not me.”

“You said it with your face.”

He crossed the road. I got the 56 and sat upstairs with my bag on my knees and watched Homerton go past in the rain, and I didn’t think about him at all, which took an enormous amount of concentration.

—

Martin was home before me, which happens maybe one week in four. I heard the bass before I got my key in the door — not playing, exactly; that particular tuning-and-swearing sound that means he’s been at it a while and something’s wrong with the C extension again.

“They moved the Bournemouth date,” he called through. “Second time. So I’ve got a Wednesday in March that’s worth precisely nothing to anybody.”

“That’s rubbish.”

“It’s fine.” He appeared in the kitchen doorway with the bow still in his hand, tall and untidy and forty-six, wearing the jumper I’ve twice tried to throw away. “How was the swimming pool of doom?”

And I said, “Cold. We got the survey signed off. There’s a truss I don’t like.”

All of which was true.

I did not say: a man I work with asked me what my hands are doing and I’ve been thinking about it for six hours.

There was no reason to say it. It wasn’t a thing. You don’t report the contents of every hour to your husband; that’s not marriage, that’s surveillance. If I’d said it, Martin would have said huh and gone back to the C extension, and rightly.

But I noticed myself not saying it. That’s the part I want to be accurate about. Not a decision — nothing as grand as that. Just a very small silence, chosen, the way you’d step over a puddle without breaking stride.

I put the kettle on. Martin went back to the bass and got the thing tuned at last and played eight bars of something from the Mahler he’d done at the Proms two summers ago, when he was still getting called for that kind of work, and it filled the flat, and I stood with my hands on the counter and let it.

Then I got out my laptop and put the Ivyholt level survey in my calendar for Thursday week, and I typed IVY — site in the title box, and I looked at it for a moment before I saved it.
