The Man Who Leaves the Room

Hester Finn has a way of saying interesting that has ended careers, and she used it on Daniel at 3:15 on the Thursday, and he folded.

We were in the glass meeting room at the Aldgate end of the office, the one with the broken blind, eight of us round a table built for six. Ivyholt stage two. Hester had the roof scheme up on the screen and her reading glasses pushed into her hair, and she’d just proposed — with the serenity of a woman who has been right since 1987 — that we take out the glazed barrel roof entirely, replace it with insulated panels, and keep a strip of glazing down the middle.

“It’s warm, it’s cheap, it passes Part L without an argument,” she said. “And it means Teresa’s truss problem becomes a truss opportunity. Half the load. Daniel. You look pained.”

“I’m never pained,” Daniel said. “I have a face that does this.”

“You’re the conservation lead. Conserve something.”

And he said: “It’s — look, it’s not ideal, obviously. The roof’s the reason the building’s listed. But if the numbers say the numbers, I’d rather we made the decision now with our eyes open than pretend we’ve got a choice we haven’t got. I can write it up in a way Historic England can live with.”

I turned my head and looked at him.

He didn’t look back. He was doing a thing with his pen, clicking it against the edge of the table, pleasant, agreeable, entirely absent — like a man who had left the room and propped a photograph of himself in the chair.

“Good,” Hester said. “Kwame, put it in the cost plan. Teresa, does that free you up?”

“No,” I said.

The pen stopped clicking.

“It doesn’t free me up, because I don’t accept the premise.” I pulled the scheme up on my own screen so I wasn’t arguing at a wall. “The roof is not failing because it’s glass. It’s failing because the shoes are corroded and the wall plate’s wet, and you could put polystyrene up there and it would still be sitting on the same rotten timber. You’d be spending three hundred thousand pounds to fix the one part of the roof that isn’t broken.”

“The insulation—“

“Is a separate problem with a separate answer, and the answer is secondary glazing at the clerestory, which we costed at Faraday Street eighteen months ago.” I kept my voice flat, because with Hester the moment there’s heat in it you’ve lost. “I can have it priced by Tuesday. But I want it on the record that I said this before the cost plan went out, and not after.”

Hester looked at me for four or five seconds. Then she pulled her glasses down out of her hair.

“Price it,” she said. “Both. I want them side by side.”

Afterwards, Daniel caught up with me by the plan chest.

“Thank you,” he said.

“Don’t.”

“No, I mean it. I should have—“

“You should have said what you actually think, which is that taking that roof off would be a disgrace, and that if this practice does it, you’ll spend the rest of your career watching people walk past a shed with your name on the drawings.” I was putting the Faraday sheets away and I was doing it too hard. “Instead of which you offered to write it up in a way Historic England can live with. Which was generous, Daniel. To a bad idea.”

He absorbed that. He has a very particular stillness when he’s taking something on the chin and has decided not to defend himself, and eight months into knowing him I had not yet worked out whether it was strength or a very good disguise for the opposite.

“You’re right,” he said.

“I know I’m right. That’s not the annoying part.”

“What’s the annoying part?”

“That I’ve now got to spend the weekend pricing two roofs instead of one, because you went quiet.”

I hadn’t meant to say because you went quiet. It came out with more of the truth in it than I’d loaded.

He pushed the plan chest drawer shut for me, which was either helpfulness or a way to not be looking at me, and said, “Can I tell you something unflattering about myself?”

“I love those.”

“When a room goes hard, I leave it. Not physically. I get agreeable and I get useful and I sort of — step outside my own body and watch the meeting happen.” He said it lightly. It didn’t sound light. “I’ve done it since I was a kid. My parents didn’t argue, they went silent and courteous for three days, and I learned that whoever raises their voice is the one who’s lost. So I don’t raise mine. I go and stand in the corridor in my head.”

“That’s a hell of a thing to know about yourself and keep doing.”

“Yes,” he said. “It is.”

The office did its four o’clock noise around us: somebody’s phone, the printer, Kwame laughing at something two desks away.

“It cost me a marriage that never happened,” he said. “In case you’re wondering how far it goes. I was engaged, and I didn’t fight with her for two years, and then I ended it in a car park in about nine minutes because there was nothing left to fight about. She said the cruellest thing anybody’s ever said to me, which was that she’d rather I’d shouted.” He shrugged. “So. When you say I went quiet. Yes. I did. I’d like to be better at it than I am.”

I stood there with a roll of Faraday Street elevations in my hands.

There are things you’re allowed to say to a colleague and things you aren’t, and the line isn’t about the words, it’s about how much of your attention you’re admitting to. I could have said thanks for telling me. I could have said well, don’t do it on my project. Both would have been fine. Both would have been small, correct doors, closing quietly.

What I said was: “For what it’s worth, I don’t think shouting is the alternative to leaving.”

“No?”

“No. Staying is the alternative to leaving.” I put the drawings in the chest. “You can stay in a room and be completely calm. You’re just not allowed to stop being in it.”

He looked at me then, and it was too long, and I turned it into checking my watch.

“I’ve got to get the 56,” I said, which was true, and not why I said it.

I priced both roofs over the weekend. I did it at the kitchen table on Saturday with the radio on while Martin taught — he takes three students on Saturdays, two of them hopeless, one of them extraordinary — and the flat filled up with a fifteen-year-old playing the Bottesini badly and then, twice, beautifully.

“You’ve been at that all day,” Martin said, at six, when the last one had gone.

“I have.”

“Is it the Hester thing?”

“It’s the Hester thing.”

He made tea, and brought it, and put a hand on the back of my neck for a second as he went past, which is what he does, and has done for eleven years, and which I have always liked.

“Will you win?” he said.

“Probably. She’ll take the secondary glazing because it’s cheaper, and she’ll pretend it was her idea by Wednesday, and honestly that’s fine with me.”

“That’s my girl. Ruthless about buildings, vague about credit.”

“I’m not vague about credit. I’m strategic about credit.”

“You’re the only person I know who could make a swimming pool sound like a knife fight.” He sat down opposite with his own tea, and said, in a completely different voice, “They’ve moved Bournemouth again.”

“You said.”

“No, they’ve moved it off. Not rescheduled. The whole thing’s gone. Funding.” He turned the mug around on the table. “Which is fine. It was three days.”

“Martin.”

“It’s fine, Tess.”

And here is the true and unflattering thing about me, which I offer in exchange for Daniel’s: I felt relief.

Not about the job. About the fact that he’d said it’s fine and closed it, because if he hadn’t, I’d have had to put down the roof costs and be present for twenty minutes, and some cold efficient part of me had already worked out that I didn’t have twenty minutes in me that night.

I did it anyway. I put the laptop down. I asked the right questions and he gave the short answers that mean thank you, and stop, and then we watched something with detectives in it, and his feet were on my lap, and at some point he fell asleep.

At half past eleven my phone lit on the arm of the sofa.

Daniel Sowande — Not urgent. Don’t answer this tonight.

Then, under it, a PDF. Two pages. He’d written the Historic England justification — not the one Hester wanted, for taking the roof off. The other one. The case for keeping it: the barrel glazing at Ivyholt as one of eleven surviving in London, the 1903 patent glazing bars, the argument that a building’s significance sits in the part everyone can see from the water. It was good. It was better than good; it was the kind of writing that makes a planning officer feel clever for agreeing with you.

At the bottom he’d added: Written before the meeting. Should have read it out. Use it Tuesday if it helps — put your name on it, it’ll carry further from you than me.

I read it twice with Martin’s feet on my lap.

Then I typed this is exactly right and deleted it, and typed thank you — but it goes in with your name on it, I’m not having that argument and sent that instead, at 11:41pm, and put the phone face down on the arm of the sofa like it had done something.

I stayed where I was so as not to wake him, which meant I couldn’t reach the laptop, which meant for about forty minutes I sat in the blue light of a television with my husband’s feet on my lap and nothing to do but think.

I thought about wall plates. I thought about whether Hester would go for the secondary glazing.

And then, for a while, without permission, I thought about a man saying I go and stand in the corridor in my head, and about how I had known exactly what he meant, and how nobody in my house had asked me a question all day that I’d had to think about before answering.

—

On Tuesday, Hester took the secondary glazing.

She took it the way she takes everything, which is to say she looked at the two schemes side by side for ninety seconds, said “Well, obviously,” and moved to item four. By Wednesday she had described it to the client as our position from the outset. Kwame caught my eye across the table and very slowly did not smile.

Daniel’s justification went in under his own name, because I’d refused to have it any other way, and Hester read it and said “This is the best thing anyone in this office has written this year,” and he said “Thank you,” and did not look at me, and I did not look at him, and the meeting went on to item five.

Afterwards I found a Post-it on my monitor in handwriting I was beginning to recognise — small, upright, architect’s capitals.

THE NAIL THING WORKS ON PDFS TOO. TRY IT ON PAGE 2, PARA 3. I HESITATED.

I did try it. I put my thumbnail against the screen like an idiot, on the third paragraph of page two, where he’d written that the glazing’s significance was arguably as much social as architectural.

Arguably. One hedge, in two pages, in the place where he’d been making the biggest claim.

I sat there for a moment with my nail on the glass, feeling absolutely nothing through it, and understanding him completely.
