The Thornwood

They rode north through country Isolde hadn’t seen since before her father’s coronation robes had still smelled new. By the end of the first day she understood why Thane hadn’t wanted to send a written report and let her read it by the fire at Thornmoor instead.

The land didn’t look wrong all at once. That was the worst part of it. A field would be ordinary, stubbled and brown with autumn, and then at its far edge the grass would stop being grass. Something low and black and glossy replaced it, catching the light wrong, like wet slate where there should have been soil. Nothing grazed near those edges. Even the crows, which Isolde had never known to be particular about anything, kept a wide, deliberate distance.

“How far does it go before you can’t see the edges anymore?” she asked, the second time they passed one of the black patches.

“Further every season.” Thane didn’t look at the field. He’d stopped looking at them hours ago, the way a man stops looking at a wound he already knows the shape of. “My scholars call the boundary the thorn-line out of habit. It isn’t a line anymore. It’s more like a coastline. Ragged. Coming in faster in some places than others.”

“And Highmarrow?”

“Highmarrow is where the coastline started.”

They made camp that night in the lee of a hill, a stream running clean on one side. Garrick’s opposite number, a quiet young captain named Ives, tested it twice before he’d let anyone fill a waterskin. Isolde sat close enough to the fire to keep her hands from stiffening and watched Thane work a whetstone along a blade that already looked sharp enough to shave with. The motion was less about the edge than about having somewhere to put his hands that wasn’t on the reins, or his temper.

“You could tell me the count,” she said. “Villages lost. People moved, or not moved in time. I’d rather hear the number from you tonight than find it myself tomorrow and wonder what else you rounded down.”

“Six villages gone entirely. Another four we’ve pulled out in the last year, ahead of it.” He set the whetstone down. “Two hundred and eleven dead that we can account for. More we can’t, because the thornwood doesn’t leave bodies to count. It leaves ground that isn’t ground anymore.”

The fire popped. Somewhere out past the ring of light a horse shifted and settled. Isolde found she had gone very still, the way she used to when a war council delivered numbers too large to argue with and too small to comfort anyone.

“Two hundred and eleven,” she repeated. “My father’s court called your coup a bloodbath. Nobody in that court has said this number once in three years.”

“Nobody in that court wants to be the one who says the thing that’s actually eating the kingdom is worse than the man who took it.” His voice had gone rough at the edges, not with anger, with something closer to exhaustion he’d clearly decided not to spend energy hiding from her anymore. “I’m not telling you this to win an argument, Isolde. I’m telling you because tomorrow you’re going to see it, and I’d rather you heard the shape of it from me first than walk into it blind.”

It was the first time he’d used her name without a title in front of it since he’d ridden through her gate. She noticed it land somewhere under her ribs, and decided not to examine why.

“Don’t do that again,” she said, quieter than she meant to.

“Do what?”

“Say my name like you have any right to it yet.” She looked at the fire instead of him. “It isn’t yours to use kindly. Not until I say otherwise.”

“Understood.” He picked the whetstone back up, and if the correction stung him he didn’t let it show, which she respected more than she wanted to. “Get some sleep. Tomorrow’s worse than today.”

· · ·Scene break

He wasn’t exaggerating.

They passed the refugees before they reached the ruin itself: a straggling line of maybe thirty people pushing handcarts along the frozen verge. Blankets and cookware and one goose in a wicker crate, lashed on top of everything else they’d judged worth saving. Ives called the column to a slower walk without being told. Thane rode ahead alone to speak to the man leading them, an old farmer with a cudgel he clearly didn’t expect to need against soldiers, and clearly meant to use if he was wrong.

Isolde watched the exchange from horseback and saw something she hadn’t expected to see: the farmer’s shoulders coming down, not up, as Thane spoke to him. It was the ease of a man being told the truth rather than managed. When Thane pointed back along the column toward her, the farmer’s eyes found her face and went wide, in a way that had nothing to do with recognizing royalty and everything to do with recognizing a ghost.

“Majesty.” He said it like a man testing whether the word still worked. “They told us you’d died in exile. Some said the General had you drowned quiet, so there’d be no body to argue over.”

“I’m considerably less dead than that.” She dismounted, against every instinct Garrick’s face was radiating at her, and crouched to the farmer’s level rather than making him crane up at a horse. “Where are you walking to?”

“Anywhere the ground still holds, Majesty. My wife’s sister took in near Thornmoor two winters back, before you’d know it, I expect, given where you were kept.” He glanced past her at Thane, wary again, old fear reasserting itself. “Begging pardon. I don’t know what’s true of either of you anymore. Only that the wood keeps coming and nobody’s stopped it yet.”

“No one’s stopped it yet,” Isolde agreed, and found she meant it as a promise rather than a comfort, which surprised her more than it should have. She had a handful of coin in her saddlebag, not much, and gave it to him anyway, along with directions to Thornmoor’s gate and Garrick’s name to say there. “Tell them I sent you. Tell them the queen is riding to see the wood herself, and that she’ll want a full account of every family it’s taken by the time she’s back.”

The farmer’s throat worked once before he managed a nod, and the column moved on. Isolde mounted again without looking at Thane. She didn’t trust her face yet to hide what watching him tell the truth to a frightened old man had done to three years of careful hatred.

“You didn’t lie to him,” she said, once the column was well behind them. “You could have. Told him it was under control. He’d have believed a general.”

“I’m done lying to people who’ve already lost everything to make myself easier to be angry at.” Thane didn’t look at her when he said it, eyes fixed ahead on the road. “It doesn’t cost me anything to be honest with a farmer. It only costs me something with people who have power to use the truth against me. I’d have thought you’d understand the difference better than most.”

She did. She hated that she did.

They reached the edge of what had once been the village of Aldermarsh a little past noon. Isolde knew it only because Thane named it before they crested the last rise — nothing about the place that greeted them afterward resembled a village at all. Where a mill and a scatter of cottages should have stood along the stream, black thorn had grown up through the stonework itself, thick as a man’s wrist in places. It curled out of window frames and hearth chimneys, as though something had reached up from underneath the ground and decided the buildings were merely in its way. The stream ran black at the edges, clear in the middle, as though even the water hadn’t fully decided to give in.

There was no smell of rot, which unsettled her more than rot would have. There was almost no smell at all, just cold and iron and something faintly sweet underneath it that made the back of her throat itch.

“We evacuated it eight months ago,” Thane said, dismounting, his voice gone flat and professional in the way she recognized from soldiers reporting losses they’d stopped letting themselves feel. “Two families refused to leave. Said their grandparents had weathered the old thornwood before and this was no different.”

“Was it?”

“We found what was left of one house a month later. I won’t describe the rest of it to you standing here.” He looked at her, checking, she realized, whether she wanted him to soften anything further. Something in her chose, deliberately, not to let him. “You wanted to see it yourself. This is what seeing it costs.”

She walked closer, against Garrick’s low warning and Ives’s sharper one, close enough to put her gloved hand near, not on, one of the black thorn stems growing through what had been a doorframe. It didn’t move. It didn’t need to. Up close the black surface wasn’t smooth at all, but patterned, faint grooves running along it in shapes that almost, almost resolved into something like writing. Her eye slid off them, the way a name refuses to surface no matter how long it’s chased.

“There’s a language in it,” she said slowly. “Or the ghost of one.”

“My scholars said the same thing before they stopped agreeing to come out here with me.” Thane crouched beside her, close but careful. For a moment they studied the pattern together, in a silence that felt less like enmity than like two people examining the same unsolved problem from opposite sides of a table. “None of them could read it. One of the older ones said it reminded her of the old blood-rite texts, the ones locked in the Highmarrow archive since before your grandmother’s time. She wouldn’t say more than that. She retired from court a week later and hasn’t answered a letter since.”

“That’s not retirement. That’s fear.”

“I know what it is.” He stood, offering her a hand up she didn’t take, which he accepted without comment, the same way he’d accepted the correction by the fire. “I brought scholars first, then soldiers. Neither one has slowed it by so much as a season. You’re the first thing I’ve brought here that the old texts might actually answer to.”

They walked the ruin’s edge in near silence after that, Isolde counting doorframes the way she’d once counted grain stores — an old habit, from a life where counting things had meant she could still fix them. Six cottages. A mill wheel choked black and motionless. A well with a lid someone had nailed shut, uselessly, as if wood and nails were any kind of answer to whatever this was.

It was Ives who found the boundary stone, half-buried near the old well: a squat granite marker with the Marrow crest still faintly visible under a lace of black creeping over one corner. It was Isolde who knelt to read the distance carved beneath the crest, old surveyor’s numbers marking how far Aldermarsh sat from Highmarrow’s outer wall.

Four miles.

She looked up at the ruin around her, at thorn thick enough to have swallowed six cottages and a stream inside three years. She did the arithmetic her father’s maps had never asked of her, because her father’s maps had never needed to account for this.

“Your messengers told my steward the thornwood sat twelve miles south of Highmarrow,” she said. “This stone says four.”

“I know.”

“You knew, and you told Garrick twelve.”

“I told him what I believed a year ago, when the report crossed my desk. It’s moved since.” Something in his face closed, careful and deliberate, a man bracing for a blow he thought he deserved. “I should have sent a rider to correct it the moment I knew better. I didn’t. Every time I say the true number aloud, someone in my own court starts asking why the border’s closing faster under my rule than it ever did under your father’s. I haven’t had an answer that keeps the peace.”

“You don’t get to manage my fear like a supply line, General.” Her voice had gone sharp enough to cut, and she let it. The alternative was standing in a dead village, discovering how much ground she’d lost while trusting a stranger’s arithmetic. “If we do this — if I marry you, if I put my blood into whatever old rite you think might slow this thing down — I need every number you have. Every season it’s moved. Every village you’ve quietly stopped counting because the count frightened you. Not the version that keeps your court calm. The true one.”

“You’ll have it.” He met her eyes without flinching from the demand, which she noted, again, as either strategy or honesty, still undecided which one she was willing to bet a kingdom on. “All of it. Whatever it costs me at court to say it plainly.”

Isolde stood at the edge of what had been someone’s kitchen, close enough now that she could see it. Tucked into a corner beneath the black thorn, a child’s wooden toy horse, paint long since flaked away — one leg swallowed into the creeping black, as though the ground had decided to keep it. She didn’t touch it. She didn’t have to. It was already the only argument she needed.

“Four miles,” she said again, mostly to herself, and turned back toward the horses before either man could watch her decide anything more on her face than she meant to show. “We ride for Thornmoor at first light. I have terms to draft, and you, General, have a court to prepare for the fact that their queen is coming home.”
