Terms of the Alliance

Isolde drafted the first version of the terms herself, by candlelight, before Thane’s column had even reached the outer gate on the ride back. She had learned long ago that whoever wrote the first draft of an agreement was the one who got to decide which questions sounded reasonable to ask.

She laid it out on the long table in Thornmoor’s hall the next morning, three sheets in her own hand. She watched Thane read them standing rather than sitting, the way he seemed to prefer doing anything that mattered.

“You’ve given yourself the regency council seat outright,” he said, not looking up. “Full vote, not advisory.”

“I’m not marrying you to sit decoratively beside a throne while men who never once wrote to me in exile decide what Caldreth needs.” She kept her voice level, businesslike, the same register she’d have used negotiating grain prices before any of this had happened to either of them. “If my blood is worth enough to risk on your rites, my judgment is worth a vote in your council. Those aren’t separable requests, General.”

“I wasn’t objecting to the seat.” He set the page down and met her eyes. “I was noting it, so we both know what we’ve agreed to later, when someone at court tries to argue you never really had it.”

That, she hadn’t expected. She covered the small recalibration with a sip of the tea Petra had brought in, and gestured for him to continue.

He read the rest in silence: her authority over Thornmoor and its province kept intact regardless of what happened at court. A formal acknowledgment that the coup’s official record would be revisited once the curse was resolved, and not before. Her right to name her own household staff without his council’s approval. And a clause, near the bottom, that she had written and rewritten four times until the wording sat as cold and exact as she needed it to.

“The marriage carries no expectation of an heir, and no expectation of anything else, until and unless I choose otherwise, in my own time, on no one’s request but my own.” She said it aloud rather than let him read it silently, because she wanted to watch his face when he heard it in her voice instead of on paper. “I know how these arrangements are usually written, General. I’ve read enough of my ancestors’ contracts to know what ‘consummation expected within the year’ looks like in old Caldreth law. I won’t have it in mine.”

“You won’t need to fight me for that clause.” Something in his jaw tightened, not with irritation, she realized, but with the effort of making sure she believed him. “I’d have written the same line if you hadn’t gotten to the page first. I’m not marrying you for an heir, Isolde. I’m marrying you because the old rites won’t answer to anyone else, and because a crown that isn’t hated by every corner of the kingdom equally might actually survive long enough to fix something. Whatever happens between us beyond that, if anything ever does, it happens because you choose it, not because a contract obligates it out of you.”

The hall was quiet enough that she heard the fire settle. She hadn’t expected him to agree so plainly, without negotiation, without the small concession he’d want traded back somewhere else on the page. The ease of it unsettled her more than resistance would have.

“You say that very easily for a man who’s spent three years being called a usurper who took everything that wasn’t his to take.”

“I took a crown. I’m not interested in taking anything else that isn’t freely given.” He held her gaze, steady, and for once there was no careful blankness in it, nothing managed. “You’ll have your own chambers at Highmarrow. Your own door, your own key, your own guard on it if you want one — though I’d ask that at least one of them answer to Garrick rather than to my court, so you know it’s loyalty and not surveillance. I’ll not set foot past that door unless you open it and want me on the other side of it. That’s not a term I need written down to keep, but I’ll sign it anyway, if it helps you trust the rest of the page.”

Isolde picked up her pen and added the line herself, in her own hand. She watched him the whole time, to see if he flinched at having his own promise made permanent in ink. He didn’t.

“There’s the matter of the army,” she said instead, moving them both back onto ground that felt safer to stand on. “I want my own household guard, separate from your command structure, answerable to me and Garrick alone.”

“Twenty men. No more, or my commanders will call it a second army inside the walls and I’ll spend the next six months managing that instead of the curse.” He paused, weighing something. “Brice Hollan won’t like any of this. My second. He fought beside me the night of the coup and has spent three years convinced every Marrow loyalist left breathing is a blade waiting for an opening. He’ll say as much to your face, probably before he says anything else.”

“Then he and I will have that in common. I’ve spent three years convinced every man who fought beside you that night deserves exactly the suspicion he’s handing out.” Isolde allowed herself a small, private satisfaction at Thane’s short, surprised breath, closer to a laugh than he likely meant to let show. “I don’t need Commander Hollan to like me, General. I need him not to put a knife in anything I build.”

“He won’t. Whatever else he is, he’s not treacherous.”

The door opened before Thane finished the thought, and a broad-shouldered man in traveling leathers came in without knocking, stopping short when he registered Isolde at the table. He had the stillness of a soldier deciding whether a room required a weapon in it.

“General. I was told you’d already opened negotiations.” His eyes moved to Isolde and stayed there, flat and assessing, no attempt at courtesy softening any of it. “Commander Brice Hollan. I fought the night your father lost his crown, Majesty, and I’d be lying if I said I’ve spent the years since hoping to see you back at Highmarrow.”

“Then we’ve started honestly, Commander, which is more than most of your court has managed with me in three years.” Isolde didn’t rise, didn’t offer him her hand, matched the flatness in his stare with her own. “You’re welcome to distrust me as loudly as you like. I’d only ask that you distrust me for something I’ve actually done, rather than for the crime of being born to the wrong father.”

Hollan’s jaw worked once, and whatever he’d come prepared to say seemed to lose some of its footing against that. He looked to Thane instead. “The eastern scouts are back. Nothing new to report on the thorn-line, but there’s a raven in from Highmarrow you’ll want before the council sits again.”

“I’ll read it within the hour.” Thane’s voice had shifted, gone brisker, a general fielding a subordinate’s report, and Isolde watched the change with interest, cataloguing how easily he moved between the two registers. “Commander. The queen and I have concluded our terms. I’d ask you to treat this contract as settled, whatever your private opinion of it.”

“My private opinion doesn’t leave this room unless someone asks for it, General. You know that.” Hollan gave Isolde one last unreadable look, part warning, part something closer to grudging acknowledgment that she hadn’t flinched from him, and left as abruptly as he’d entered.

“He’ll come around,” Thane said, once the door had shut. “Slower than most. He lost a brother the week before the coup, to fever, not to your father’s war. It left him certain that trusting anyone slowly is the only kind of trust that survives losing people. I’d rather you knew that than spend the next year assuming his coldness is only about you.”

“That’s more than you’ve told me about any of your other men.” Isolde studied him, recalibrating something she couldn’t quite name yet. “Why tell me that one.”

“Because you’re about to live surrounded by people who’ll give you every reason to think the worst of them, and I’d rather you had at least one true thing to weigh against the worst, where it’s fair to.” He said it plainly, without performance, and it settled somewhere Isolde didn’t have a ready defense against.

He hesitated, then added, with the particular care of a man deciding whether a name was safe to say aloud yet, “Your cousin wrote to me last week. Cressida. Asked to be received at court once the marriage is announced, said she wanted to offer her support publicly, get ahead of anyone who might frame a Marrow standing apart from you as disloyal.”

Something in Isolde went very still, an old instinct from a childhood spent watching her father’s court decide, quietly, who among the family was harmless and who was merely patient. “Cressida hasn’t written to me once in three years. Not a single letter, not even after the coup, when a cousin might have been forgiven for wanting to know if I still drew breath.”

“Do you want me to refuse her?”

“No.” She said it slowly, turning the thought over before she committed to it. “I want her where I can watch her. Tell her she’s welcome at court. Tell her nothing else, and watch who she speaks to in the first week more closely than you watch me.”

Thane studied her a moment, something like respect settling into his expression that she hadn’t asked for and wasn’t entirely sure she wanted from him yet. “You still think like a queen who never lost the throne.”

“I never stopped being one, General. I only stopped having anyone left who agreed with me about it.” She slid the third page across the table, the last of it: the clause naming the working itself. She would give her blood freely to the old rites when and as needed to fight the curse. No working would be attempted without her explicit consent in the moment, regardless of what the contract said in advance. Thane would never ask it of her as a punishment or a test. “This is the part that matters more than the crown or the army. I won’t be cut open by increments because a council decided it was convenient. Every working, my choice, every time, or none of it happens at all.”

“Agreed. Without condition.” He signed beneath her clause without asking her to soften a single word of it. Something in the certainty of the gesture landed harder than she expected — harder than the earlier promise about the door. “I’ve seen what an unwilling working does to the rites, Isolde. Half the old texts are warnings about it. I’d sooner lose the whole kingdom to the thornwood than force blood out of you that wasn’t given clean.”

She looked at his signature beside hers on the page, plain and unadorned, no flourish. The hand of a man who’d learned to write his name on supply requisitions rather than treaties. The thing tightening in her chest wasn’t quite the satisfaction of a good negotiation closing in her favor. It was something closer to unwelcome vertigo — discovering an enemy had turned out to be more careful with her than several people who had never once threatened her at all.

“The wedding,” she said, to give the feeling somewhere else to go, “when.”

“Ten days. My scholars say the old rites favor certain calendar points, and the closest one falls then. Any longer and we lose the season’s window.” He rolled the pages carefully, the negotiation clearly closed as far as he was concerned. Something in the way he lingered at the door, though, suggested he wasn’t quite ready to leave the room. “Your court will hate the speed of it. They’ll say I’m rushing you before you can change your mind.”

“Let them say it.” Isolde stood, smoothing her sleeve, reclaiming the last of the room’s authority for herself before he could carry any more of it out the door with him. “I’ve spent three years being told what I’m allowed to want by people who’ve never once asked me. I’d rather marry my father’s killer on my own timeline than wait for anyone’s permission to hate him properly while I do it.”

His jaw tightened at that, quick and unguarded, gone before she could fully name what had lived there, closer to grief than offense. “I’d rather you hated me honestly than pretended otherwise for the court’s comfort,” he said, low, already half through the door. “I’ve had enough of people pretending.”

He left before she could decide whether that had been an apology or the truest thing he’d said to her since the frost-bitten morning he’d ridden through her gate uninvited. She stood alone in the quiet hall a long while after — three signed pages in front of her, a wedding ten days off. She turned her mother’s ring slowly around her finger. She tried, and largely failed, to locate the clean, familiar shape of her hatred where she’d left it.
