The Wedding

The gown was Marrow gray shot through with a thread of black. The seamstress swore it was traditional mourning-into-marriage embroidery; Isolde privately suspected someone at court had chosen it to remind everyone watching what this wedding was standing on top of.

She let Petra fasten the last of the buttons in silence, because there wasn’t anything useful left to say that the two of them hadn’t already said twice over the preceding week. Petra’s hands were steadier than her voice had been at breakfast. That, at least, was something to be grateful for.

“You don’t have to smile at any of them,” Petra said, low, tucking one final pin into place. “Not the court, not him. Get through the words. That’s all today needs from you.”

“I intend to get through considerably more than the words.” Isolde studied herself in the narrow glass, the gray, the black thread, her mother’s ring already moved from her right hand to her left, a small private rebellion nobody at court would think to question. “I buried a father in this dress’s color. I can wear it to bury an old hatred for an afternoon without it costing me anything permanent.”

The chapel at Highmarrow’s outer keep, the only part of the old capital still considered safe enough for ceremony, had been swept and re-hung with banners for the occasion. Marrow gray beside Ashgrove’s plain soldier’s green — an arrangement someone on Thane’s council had clearly fought hard to make look like an alliance rather than a surrender. It didn’t quite succeed. Isolde walked the aisle between two rows of a court that had not seen her in three years. She watched the reception splinter along a line she recognized instantly. The old nobility rose out of something like relief, a queen returned however conditionally. The army officers stayed seated a beat too long, a silent accounting of what her presence might cost the order they’d bled to build. Somewhere near the back, dressed finer than the occasion strictly called for, a woman with the Marrow cheekbones watched with an attentiveness that didn’t match her polite, easy smile. Cressida had arrived precisely on time and not a moment earlier, which told Isolde everything about how deliberately her cousin intended to be seen.

Thane waited at the altar in his plainest dress uniform, no crown, which she noted — a deliberate choice she hadn’t asked for and hadn’t expected. He watched her walk the whole length of the aisle without once looking away. There was nothing in his face she could have called triumph. Only a kind of grave attention, as though he understood how much this cost her and had no intention of pretending otherwise for the court’s benefit.

The rites-keeper spoke the old words, the ones about crown and country and blood joined for the kingdom’s sake rather than the pair’s. Isolde said her half of them clearly, without a single tremor she’d allow anyone watching to see. Thane said his own half in a voice pitched for the whole hall to hear him mean it. When the moment came for hands to join over the ceremonial blade — the old gesture of a marriage bound to the crown rather than merely to each other — his grip was careful. Light enough that she could have pulled away at any point. She found herself, absurdly, noting that restraint rather than the blade.

No one asked them to kiss. That particular tradition, she’d learned during the negotiations, had quietly not survived the redraft of the ceremony, and she suspected, without asking, whose insistence had removed it.

Tradition demanded one dance before the feast could properly begin — the old formal turn that every Caldreth wedding opened with, hands and measured steps and nothing else. Isolde had almost hoped the redraft that struck the kiss from the ceremony had struck this too. It hadn’t. She found herself facing Thane in the center of the cleared floor, the whole court ringed around them. His hand was held out, waiting for her to close the distance rather than closing it himself.

“You don’t have to,” he said, low enough that only she could hear it. “I’ll tell them you’re tired from the road. No one will argue with a queen who’s just buried three years of exile in an afternoon.”

“They’ll argue plenty if their new queen can’t manage one dance at her own wedding.” She put her hand in his, because the alternative handed the court a story she didn’t want written, and because some smaller, more private part of her found she didn’t fully want to refuse it either. His hand was warm, steady, the same deliberate lightness he’d used at the altar. “Don’t step on my hem, General. I only own the one good pair of shoes.”

“I’ve led cavalry through a mountain pass in a blizzard. I can manage your hem.” The corner of his mouth moved, not quite a smile, closer to the first unguarded thing she’d seen on his face all day. He turned her into the first steps with a competence that surprised her, his free hand light at her waist, correct and formal. He gave her every inch of space the dance’s old rules technically allowed.

They didn’t speak through most of it. The music filled the space instead. Isolde found her attention narrowing, against her better judgment: the warmth of his hand through her glove, the steadiness of his lead, the way he watched her face rather than the room. As if the two hundred people watching them were incidental to the actual business of not letting her stumble. When the final turn brought them close enough that she could feel the warmth of him along her arm, closer than the dance strictly required, neither of them stepped back to correct it.

“There,” he said quietly, as the music resolved and the court began, dutifully, to applaud. “Survived.”

“Barely.” She stepped back the moment the steps allowed it, putting the careful distance back between them before her own face could give away more than she’d meant to spend on a single dance. “Don’t let it go to your head, General. I’ve danced with worse partners and hated every one of them less than I’m required to hate you.”

“Noted,” he said, and there was something almost like warmth in it, gone before either of them had to decide what to do with it, and the court’s applause swallowed whatever might have followed.

The feast afterward was smaller than a coronation and larger than she’d wanted. The great hall was lit with more candles than Thornmoor had burned through in a season. Isolde spent most of it fielding a court that hadn’t decided yet whether to court her favor or resent her return. Cressida found her near the second hour, gliding up with two cups of spiced wine and a warmth that would have been convincing if Isolde hadn’t spent a childhood learning how her cousin’s smile worked.

“Cousin. You look every inch the queen they tried to convince me you’d stopped being.” Cressida pressed one cup into her hand before she could decline it. “I know we’ve years of silence between us. I’d like to end them, if you’ll let me. Whatever else has happened, we’re family, and family should stand together in a court this uncertain.”

“We should.” Isolde accepted the cup, didn’t drink from it yet, and studied her cousin’s face for the particular tell she remembered from their girlhood — the way Cressida’s eyes moved to the door whenever she was measuring an exit. They moved to the door now. “I’m glad you came, Cressida. I mean that more plainly than you probably expect.”

“Do you.” Her eyes went flat for half a breath, gone before Isolde could name it, replaced instantly by the same easy warmth. “Well. There’s time enough to prove it either way, isn’t there. Congratulations, cousin. Truly.”

She drifted off before Isolde could press further. Across the hall Thane caught her eye, just long enough to ask a silent question, and Isolde answered it with the smallest shake of her head. Later. Not here, not with half the court watching for this kind of exchange to read meaning into.

Commander Hollan spent the feast near the door, arms crossed, watching Cressida with an intensity Isolde found she shared. Chancellor Osric Fenn, her father’s old advisor, approached only once. He bowed too low for the occasion, said a handful of formal congratulations in a voice that shook slightly on the word father, and retreated before she could ask him anything real. She filed that, too, alongside Cressida’s eyes on the door, for a quieter hour.

Her chambers, when Petra walked her to them well past midnight, were what the contract had promised. A good fire already built. A heavy door with a lock she’d been given the only key to. And, on the small table by the window, no ceremonial nightgown laid out by some overeager attendant assuming what the night required of her. Someone, she suspected Thane himself, had made certain of that.

She was still standing at the window, watching the last of the wedding torches being carried off toward the outbuildings, when a knock came, careful and single, at the door she hadn’t yet locked.

“It’s Thane,” he said through the wood, before she could ask. “Not asking to come in. Only to say goodnight properly, if you’ll open it partway.”

She considered leaving him standing there, out of nothing more than the pure petty comfort of it. Then she opened the door the length of her own arm instead, enough to see him in the corridor’s low light. Still in the plain uniform, crown-less, tired in a way the whole day’s ceremony hadn’t quite let him show until now.

“You didn’t need to check on me,” she said.

“I didn’t come to check on you. I came to say it directly, once, so there’s no question of it hanging unspoken between us on our own wedding night.” He held her eyes, steady, measured, the same care he’d used at the altar. “I will not touch you tonight, or any night, unless you tell me plainly that you want it — and even then only as much as you want, and no further. Not because the contract says so. Because I meant every word of it when I signed. You don’t owe this marriage your body to make it real. It’s real enough on the strength of what we’ve already put our names to.”

“I know the terms, General. I wrote half of them.”

“I know you know them.” Something almost gentle moved through his voice, patient with her in a way she hadn’t braced herself against. “I’m not telling you because I doubt you remember the page. I’m telling you because there’s a difference between a clause on paper and a man saying it to your face, on the one night every court in the world would forgive him for pretending it away. I didn’t want you lying awake wondering if I meant it.”

Isolde stood in the narrow gap of the door, close enough to see the exhaustion under his eyes, the same scar catching candlelight. Something moved in her chest that had nothing to do with hatred. For the first time in three years, she was being taken fully at her word by someone with every reason and every opportunity not to.

“Goodnight, Thane,” she said, and it was the first time she’d used his name without the title since he’d ridden through her gate, offered deliberately, a small thing given freely rather than extracted. “Thank you for saying it to my face.”

His composure slipped, quick, unguarded, gone before he could stop it or she could fully name it. “Goodnight, Isolde.” He stepped back from the door without being asked to, giving her the space before she had to claim it. “Sleep well. Tomorrow the real work starts.”

She shut the door, turned the key herself, and stood with her back against the wood a long moment. She listened to his footsteps recede down the corridor, toward whatever chamber they’d given him at the opposite end of the hall. When she climbed into a bed built for a queen she hadn’t been in three years, sleep took considerably longer to arrive than she’d have liked — for reasons that had nothing to do with grief at all.

· · ·Scene break

Petra found her at the window again come morning, still in her wedding shift, watching frost silver the courtyard below where the wedding torches had burned down to ash overnight. “You didn’t sleep, Majesty.”

“Not much.” Isolde turned from the glass, and something in her own face must have given away more than she intended, because Petra’s expression shifted from worry to something more careful.

“He kept his word, then.” Not quite a question.

“He kept his word.” Isolde said it plainly, testing how it sat in her own mouth now that the night was safely behind her. “Which is, I’ll admit, not the wedding night I spent three years imagining I’d survive, in every version where I imagined surviving it at all.”

Petra set about laying out a plainer dress for the day, practical, nothing ceremonial left to justify. “Is that disappointment I’m hearing, Majesty, or relief?”

“I haven’t decided yet.” Isolde let her fasten the first of the buttons, watching the courtyard fill slowly with servants clearing the last of the wedding’s evidence away. The banners, the torches, the ordinary work of a kingdom that had to keep functioning regardless of what any single night had or hadn’t been. “Ask me again once I’ve had my tea, and I still may not have an honest answer for you.”
