The Gallery

The man standing in front of Meera Anand’s worst drawings was reading her margin notes out loud, and he was getting them right.

“This won’t work but keep it anyway,” he said, to the wall. “That isn’t a design note. That’s an argument.”

Meera had not agreed to have the sketches hung. Somebody in marketing had decided the Ellery Rooms scholarship fundraiser needed Bellweather Tower’s early concept drawings, the ugly midnight ones, crossed-out dimensions and all, because they were humanizing. Nobody had asked the human. She had found out when Faye handed her a glass of something pale at the door and said, Don’t kill anyone, they’re charming.

So she had come across the marble floor in a green dress she had bought in January and never worn, past a sculpture that looked like a filing cabinet in distress, fully intending to stand in front of her own handwriting and suffer privately. There was already someone suffering on her behalf.

“Maybe the argument was productive,” she said.

He turned round.

She’d pictured, from the voice, somebody older. He was perhaps thirty-three. Dark suit, no tie, a stillness that made the room behind him look busy. He had the face of a man who didn’t expect to be spoken to at parties and had come anyway. When he looked at her, he looked for a second too long, as if he were checking her against something.

“Was it?” He nodded at the sketch. “Productive?”

“It’s the timber core.” She heard herself go precise, the way she did in reviews. “At that stage everyone wanted it to be concrete, because concrete’s what fire engineers dream about. I kept a version where it wasn’t. That’s the note.”

“And the load path.” He touched the air an inch from the glass, following a line she had drawn at one in the morning over her third cup of tea. “It comes down through the core and lands on a post-tensioned podium. So why is there a transition floor at ten?”

Nobody had asked her that. Not the client’s lawyer, not the structural team in the first month, not the Design Review Panel in its pre-submission meeting, which was in three days and which she had been dreading since the morning. She’d spent that morning standing over the balsa model in the studio with a coffee going cold in her hand, telling herself the planter beds on the northeast corner were not crooked.

She told him why. The spans changed above the retail levels; the column grid had to shift; she had argued for the transfer at ten, lost, argued again, and made the engineers run her numbers until they agreed with her. He asked two follow-up questions. Both were better than anything the panel had managed.

Somewhere in the middle of it she noticed she had stopped performing confidence and was simply having it.

“You ask very good questions,” she said, “for a man at a scholarship fundraiser.”

“I read a great deal.” It came out like a confession. She laughed before she’d decided to. “I’m Julian.”

“Meera.”

She didn’t offer a surname. He didn’t ask for one. She would think about that later, more than it deserved.

“Do you work in the industry, Julian? Or do you just corner architects at parties?”

“Neither, strictly. I fund things, occasionally. Usually from far enough away that I don’t have to come to rooms like this.” He glanced at the chandelier as if it had personally invited him. “Tonight seemed like an exception.”

“What kind of things?”

“The kind I’d rather hear other people talk about.” He tipped his glass at the wall. “Who’s paying for this one? The papers never say.”

“Nobody’s allowed to know.” She hadn’t meant to sound bitter. “There’s a company with a name like a shipping lane, and a lawyer who answers emails in four business days, and a clause in our brief that says no one at my firm has direct contact with the principal. Not a call. Not a coffee. I’ve been writing memos to him for two years and I couldn’t pick him out of a queue.”

Something in his face went very still.

“That seems,” he said carefully, “like a strange way to build a tower.”

“It’s the biggest job my firm’s had in a decade. If anyone thought I’d breached that clause, I’d be in front of our ethics committee by morning, and my name would be off the partnership shortlist my boss is putting it on in November.” She shrugged, and the dress moved in a way that reminded her she was wearing it. “So I follow it. I write very good memos to a man I’ve never met, and I pretend I don’t mind that he’ll never know who wrote them.”

“He might read them,” Julian said. “Closely.”

“He might. I’ll never find out.”

“And if you did meet him?” He was watching her now, not the sketches. “What would you do?”

Meera considered it honestly. The truth was that she had imagined this. A faceless man with a third of a skyline, walking up to her in a lobby.

“I’d make him wait his turn for a coffee,” she said. “Like everyone else.”

He laughed.

It was not the polite kind. It came out of him as though he hadn’t expected it, and hadn’t done it in a while, and wasn’t sure it was allowed. For a moment he looked years younger and a little alarmed. Meera felt it land somewhere under her ribs, the way a correct number lands.

“That,” Julian said, when he could, “is the best answer I’ve heard in a long time.”

“You sound like you know him.”

He didn’t answer that. He looked back at the wall, at the note in her cramped hand, and when he spoke again his voice had gone quieter.

“Whoever built this is lucky. Most people get the stubbornness negotiated out of them before thirty. I watched it happen to someone I admired, once. It went badly for everyone.”

She wanted to ask who. She had known him for twenty minutes and she wanted the true version of whatever that was, which was alarming, because she didn’t want the true version of most people she had known for years.

A woman with a gallery lanyard appeared at his elbow with the quiet urgency of someone sent to fetch a person who did not like being fetched. “I’m so sorry. The chair’s asking for you upstairs before the auction. We’re so grateful you came tonight, sir.” A lowered voice, not low enough. “Given everything.”

Given everything. Meera turned the words over and couldn’t place their weight.

Julian’s expression didn’t change, but he straightened, the way a man straightens into a coat he’d rather not wear.

“Of course.” He looked back at Meera. “It was a real pleasure. I mean that.” A pause, a fraction too long. “I hope the panel on Thursday sees what I saw on this wall.”

Then he was gone into the crowd, and she was standing alone in front of her own worst drawings holding a warm glass, unable to explain why a stranger without a surname had made her feel more seen than anyone had in two years.

“There you are.” Faye arrived at her shoulder, following her gaze to the staircase with undisguised interest. “Who was that?”

“Julian.”

“Julian who?”

“I don’t know. He funds things.”

“A man who funds things and won’t say what.” Faye took the glass out of her hand and replaced it with a full one. “At the Ellery, that’s either very rich or very broke. There’s no third option.” She steered Meera towards the auction room. “Statistically, you know, our mystery investor’s in this building tonight. Half the money in the city is.”

“Statistically he’s at home with a spreadsheet.”

“Then you’d better hope Julian-who-funds-things likes timber.”

Meera laughed, and went where she was steered, and did not look back at the staircase more than twice.

· · ·Scene break

Edwina Cho was in the corner by the coat check, where she had said she would be, drinking water and watching the room with the patience of a woman who had spent eleven years learning to be furniture on command.

“The chair needed you for four minutes,” she said. “You were gone for twenty-five.”

“I was looking at the sketches.”

“With whom?”

Julian put his glass down on a tray going past. He had drafted every contract of his adult life by hand before a lawyer saw it. He was not in the habit of saying things he hadn’t drafted first.

“The architect,” he said. “Meera Anand. The core is hers.”

Edwina set her water down. “You spoke to the lead architect on your own project. At a party. For twenty-five minutes.”

“She doesn’t know who I am.”

“That protects you.” Edwina lowered her voice, though the quartet made it unnecessary. “It does nothing for her. You wrote that clause, Julian. Ashby Bowen signed it because you insisted. No direct contact with the principal, and any contact declared to their ethics committee. She can’t declare a man she doesn’t know she’s met. If anyone at that firm learns she spent half an hour at the Ellery with the one person she’s forbidden to meet, it won’t be you in front of that committee.”

He knew. He had known from the moment Meera said shortlist and shrugged, as though her whole career were a detail.

“She told me what she’d do if she met me,” he said.

Edwina waited.

“She’d make me wait my turn for a coffee.”

For a moment, Edwina Cho looked almost sorry for him. It was not an expression he had seen on her in eleven years, including the week of the inquiry.

“Go home,” she said. “Let the sketches be sketches. If you’re wise, she never learns your surname, you never use hers, and that building goes up the way it’s supposed to, with the two of you on opposite sides of a rule that exists for a reason.”

“I know why it exists.”

“Then act like it.”

He drove home along the harbour with the Bellweather cranes lit against the water. At his desk, out of habit, he opened the project directory. Her name was the fourth entry under the architect’s team. Her mobile number was beside it. He had been able to see that number for two years and had never once had a reason to look at it.

He looked at it now for a long time.

He had built the rule himself, so that no one could be hurt by standing near him. Tonight a woman had described it to his face, with her career on one side of it, and laughed about the man who wrote it.

Julian closed the directory without writing the number down. It was, he realised, the first rule of his own he had ever wanted to break.
