The Signature Line

Four days after the fundraiser, the Design Review Panel’s condition had a price, a deadline and, for the first time in two years, a client who wanted to talk about it.

Which was how Meera found herself on Friday afternoon, sitting in Ashby Bowen’s largest meeting room with Odette on one side and Faye on the other, waiting for a video call to connect with the one client she had never once seen a face for.

“This is new,” Faye murmured, watching the screen at the head of the table cycle through a loading icon. “We never do calls. We do emails that take Edwina Cho four business days to answer.”

“The pour date doesn’t have four business days,” Odette said. “The peer review has to be commissioned by Monday or we lose the contractor’s slot until spring. Someone decided a call was faster than an email chain.”

“Someone being Edwina.”

“Someone being whoever tells Edwina what to decide.” Odette straightened her blazer, the small ritual she performed before anything that mattered. “Behave. All of you. This is the closest any of us has come to the money behind this project, and I intend for it to go smoothly.”

The screen resolved into a clean gray backdrop and Edwina Cho’s face, composed and slightly too well-lit, the way people looked when they had thought carefully about where to put a lamp. Beside her name on the call log sat a second entry, camera off, listed only as Meridian — Advisor.

“Good afternoon,” Edwina said, with the specific crispness of someone who had never once in her professional life said good afternoon and meant it as a pleasantry rather than a starting gun. “Thank you for accommodating the timeline. I have a colleague from Meridian joining to advise on the financial side, given the number involved. He’ll be listening in, camera off, for efficiency. Ms. Anand, I understand you have the peer review scope ready to walk us through.”

Meera walked them through it. She’d rehearsed the numbers so many times since the panel that the language had stopped feeling like her own and started feeling like a second, more confident version of herself she got to borrow for meetings: independent structural fire engineer, six weeks, cost breakdown itemized against contingency, the specific clause in the original planning consent that made the peer review unavoidable rather than optional. Edwina asked two sharp, procedural questions, the kind a lawyer asked to make sure nothing could later be disputed, and made careful notes on a legal pad angled just out of camera view.

“That’s satisfactory from a documentation standpoint,” Edwina said. “Give me a moment to confer before we finalize the figure.”

The screen didn’t go dark. Edwina simply turned her chair slightly, presumably toward whoever sat beside her out of frame, and murmured something too quiet for the room’s speakers to catch cleanly. Meera reached for her water, only half listening, more focused on whether Odette’s expression suggested the number itself was in trouble.

Then a second voice came through the call, low, unhurried, clearly not intended for the room at all.

“Tell her yes. The load path argument in her memo was correct the first time and it’s still correct now, they’re not going to find anything the peer review didn’t already confirm on paper. She doesn’t need to spend six weeks proving something she already proved in October.”

Meera’s hand stopped halfway to the water glass.

She knew that voice. She had spent four days trying very hard not to think about that voice, with limited success, and here it was, coming through a laptop speaker in a meeting room on a Friday afternoon, saying her name the way a man might mention someone he respected rather than a line item he was approving.

“Julian, you’re not muted,” Edwina said, in a tone so carefully flat it might as well have been a scream.

The silence that followed had a texture to it. Faye’s head turned toward Meera, slow and deliberate, a question forming on her face that she visibly decided, out of sheer professional discipline, not to ask out loud in front of a client on the line. Odette’s pen had stopped moving entirely.

Edwina recovered first, the way people who bill by the hour always did. “Apologies. Cross talk on our end. To confirm, Meridian approves the peer review scope and budget as presented. We’ll have written confirmation to you within the hour, Ms. Frame, per the usual process.”

“Understood,” Odette said, in the voice she used for closing meetings that had gone sideways without letting the room know she’d noticed. “We appreciate the quick turnaround.”

The call ended in the ordinary, anticlimactic way calls always did, a chorus of thank you, talk soon and a screen going gray. Nobody in the room moved for a second afterward.

“Well,” Faye said, into the silence, with the careful neutrality of someone laying groundwork for a much longer conversation later, “that was efficient.”

“It was,” Odette agreed, gathering her folder, watching Meera with an attention that felt entirely too specific. “Meera. You look like you’ve seen a ghost holding a change order.”

“I’m fine. I think I just recognized someone’s voice from somewhere and it threw me.” It was the truth, technically, delivered in the flattest tone she could manage while her pulse did something complicated in her throat.

“From the panel, maybe. Voices carry strangely on video calls.” Odette said it without much conviction, already moving toward the door, the kind of woman who filed strange moments away rather than investigating them on the spot. “Get the written confirmation logged the second it lands. I want that peer review commissioned by Monday.”

Faye lingered after Odette left, closing the door with unnecessary softness. “You’re allowed to tell me. I watched you go the color of a wall.”

“It’s nothing.”

“Meera. A disembodied voice just called you correct about a load path in a tone I can only describe as fond, and you looked like you’d been struck by lightning.” Faye sat down across from her, entirely unhurried, entirely willing to wait. “I’m not going to guess. I’m just going to sit here looking supportive until you decide to tell me.”

Meera put her head down on the table for exactly three seconds, which did not, in fact, make the last four minutes stop being true. “That was him.”

“Him who.”

“Julian. From the fundraiser.” She lifted her head. “The man from the gallery. The one who asked all the good questions about the sketches and wouldn’t give me his last name. That was his voice. I would know it anywhere.”

Faye’s mouth opened, closed, opened again. “The Meridian advisor. The one who told Edwina Cho, on a recorded work call, that your memo from October was correct. You’re telling me that man—“

“Is somehow connected to Meridian Line Holdings. Yes. I don’t know how, exactly. Maybe he works for them. Maybe he’s a consultant they bring in on financial calls.” Meera heard herself building the more comfortable explanation even as she said it, the one where the man from the gallery was some senior employee rather than the thing her stomach had already, quietly, concluded. “It doesn’t have to mean what it sounds like it means.”

“Meera.” Faye’s voice had gone gentle in a way that made it worse, not better. “He called you by your first name in a private aside to his own lawyer, in defense of a number he clearly already knew the details of, without needing anyone in this room to remind him what the memo said. That’s not what a consultant sounds like.”

Meera didn’t answer, because there wasn’t a version of the sentence that didn’t end where Faye’s had ended, and because some part of her had already known it the second his voice came through the speaker, the way you know a fact about your own life before you’ve let yourself say it out loud.

Julian ended the call, closed his laptop with more force than the situation required, and looked at Edwina, who had already turned her chair fully around to face him with the specific, wordless fury of a woman who did not need volume to make a point.

“I was on mute,” he said, which was true, and useless, and he knew it the moment it left his mouth.

“You were on mute for the meeting. You were not on mute when you leaned six inches to your left and told me, in a completely audible voice, exactly how you feel about that woman’s memo.” Edwina closed her own laptop, set it down with exaggerated care, the kind reserved for objects she’d rather have thrown. “She heard you, Julian. I watched the room go still. She knows your voice.”

“She knows a voice. She doesn’t know a name.”

“She has your first name, from the gallery. She now has your voice, from a Meridian-funded call, saying something no consultant would ever say. Do the arithmetic. You’ve made this considerably easier for her to solve than you seem to think.” Edwina exhaled slowly, the closest thing she allowed herself to visible frustration. “I told you this was the risk. I told you the night of the fundraiser.”

“I know what you told me.”

“Then what, precisely, do you intend to do about it.”

He didn’t have a clean answer, only the messy, insistent fact of what he’d actually felt, sitting six inches from a lawyer he trusted with everything except this, hearing Meera walk a room full of skeptical people through her own certainty and wanting, more than he wanted the arrangement to hold, to tell her directly that she’d been right all along instead of letting the correction arrive filtered through Edwina’s careful paperwork.

“I’m going to write to her,” he said.

“Julian.”

“Not as Meridian. Not through the firm. As myself.” He was already reaching for his phone, the decision arriving with the particular calm that came, for him, only after he’d stopped pretending he had another option. “She’s going to spend the rest of today wondering if she imagined what she heard. I’m not going to let her sit with that alone. She deserves better than a lawyer’s cross talk on our end.”

“That is precisely the sentence I use to protect you. You cannot simply discard it because it made you uncomfortable to hear applied to her.”

“I know.” He looked up at her, and whatever she saw in his face made her sit back slightly, some of the fight leaving her shoulders, replaced by the particular resignation of a woman who had represented him long enough to recognize when an argument was already lost. “I’m not asking your permission, Edwina. I’m telling you what I’m about to do, because you deserve that much honesty, and because I know exactly how much it costs both of us if this goes wrong.”

Edwina didn’t answer for a long moment, studying him the way she might study a clause she suspected of hiding a problem she hadn’t found yet. “Then you’d better be very sure it’s worth it.”

He didn’t answer that either, because he wasn’t sure, not in any way he could have defended in front of a board or a judge or the version of himself that had built an entire quiet life around never being sure of anything that could be taken from him twice. He was only sure of one thing, small and stubborn and entirely his own: that somewhere across the city, Meera Anand was replaying four seconds of audio in her head, wondering if she’d lost her mind, and he was the only person alive who could tell her she hadn’t.

He typed the message twice before he sent it, deleting the first attempt for being too careful and the second for not being careful enough, and settled finally on the plainest version he had.

It was me on the call. I’m sorry you had to find out that way. I’d rather tell you the rest myself, if you’ll let me. — Julian

He sent it to the mobile number listed under her name in the project’s consultant directory, a number he had technically had access to for two years and never once used, and then sat with his phone face-down on the table, waiting to find out whether he had just done the kindest thing he’d done in five years, or the most reckless one.

· · ·Scene break

Meera was still at her desk long after the rest of the studio had thinned out, ostensibly finalizing the peer review scope, actually replaying four seconds of audio for the twentieth time, when her phone lit up on the desk beside her keyboard with a number she didn’t recognize.

She almost let the screen go dark without looking, out of pure superstition, as if not reading it could undo the last two hours. Then she saw the first line of the message glowing on the lock screen, and any illusion that this could stay a coincidence, a strange trick of acoustics, a voice she’d merely convinced herself she recognized, disappeared entirely.

It was me on the call.

She set the phone face-up on the desk, the way you might set down something that had turned out to be heavier than it looked, and read the rest of it twice before she let herself breathe out. Faye’s chair, three desks over, was empty. Odette’s office light was off. There was no one left in the building to ask what she should do next, which meant, for the first time since the fundraiser, the decision belonged entirely to her.
