Dear Maeve,

I have one rule, written for men exactly like him: never take a client with history. I have never broken it. Not for money, not for anyone, not once — until his name landed on my desk requesting me specifically, and some ugly, competent part of me was glad.

Synopsis

Nora Vasquez has exactly one rule: never take a client with history. She wrote it after Cal Reyes tore her cost model apart in front of eleven partners when she was twenty-one and unpaid, and never once said he was sorry. Eight years and one company later, his name lands on her desk requesting her specifically — Reyes Maritime is bleeding fuel costs, six weeks from a bank calling in its loan, and Cal wants the one person who has ever told him no running the audit that could end his career. She has a company, a reputation, and eight years of proving a point to lose. Wanting to say yes anyway is the part she can't explain to anyone, including herself. Cal has spent eight years building an empire out of spite and insomnia, and he needs the one person immune to his charm walking his halls asking the questions no one else in the building will. He didn't expect working beside her to be the first thing that has made him feel awake in years. As Nora's audit closes in on a fraud that could sink them both, the line between rival and something far more dangerous keeps slipping, and neither of them can afford to be the one who crosses it first.

I’ll tell anyone who asks that I said yes for the fee. That’s the version I’d give under oath, and it isn’t a lie, just not the whole one. The truth is smaller and harder to defend: I wanted to stand in a room with him again and win properly, where it would cost him something this time.

Whether that’s ambition or a door I never actually closed, I haven’t decided. Don’t ask which yet. I’m not ready to know.
