On Tuesday night in Newcastle I looked at him instead. In the three seconds of dark after the last chord I said his name, and he said “Here,” and I kissed him. Later, lying in my bunk across the aisle from his, I told him not a word, not yet. He asked why not. I didn’t have an answer, and he let it go. He always lets me go first. It’s his worst quality.
The next night I asked him in for tea and sent him away at my door, sober, and told him both things were true. I meant every word of it.
Now the label wants to record the last night of the tour, the bridge and whatever it is we do there, and he says I’m not protecting the band at all. He says I’m protecting the exit. He has asked me to spend tomorrow somewhere nobody knows us, and I said yes before I’d counted anything.
